Keys to the Kingdom Tour

We have booked a trip for October and plan to do this tour. Although we booked for a week (over Columbus Day), 2 of my children are in college and only staying 4-5 days. My questions are:
1) How close to the actual date that I want the tour can I purchase tickets? How quickly do they fill up/sell out?(one daughter may not have class schedule until closer to the trip)
2) Would you book the tour on Columbus Day itself? I am trying to think of the best day (assuming we only can book it Fri,Sat,Sun, or Mon)

I booked my tour for early May during the last week of February for 2 people

That will be a busy weekend. We booked our tour 6 months in advance, but I really have no idea when they fill. If you call the Tours number they may be able to advise you on this
The holiday itself will be very busy. The tour takes 5 - 5.5 hours and includes lunch. It might be a good day to do it, as you basically are otherwise occupied while it is very crowded. We had about 10 people on our tour and used "earbuds" to remotely hear the guide. I don't know how difficult it would be to stay together in a crowded MK on that day. I would book the first tour of the day

It doesn't have to be too far in advance but the earlier the better because they do tend to sell out. Not that I think Columbus day would fall into this category but they sometimes to not have the tour when the park is very crowded. They did not have it last week. I'm not sure if they will have it this week.
