I am not sure where to place this thread, so feel free to move it if need be. I will be having ankle ligament reconstruction surgery mid-August. Prior to finding out I need surgery I had already booked WL for the 1st weekend in September for my DD and I for her 17th birthday. It's a special time for just she and I to leave her siblings at home and go (did this when her older sister turned 17 too). I had already promised her we would do the Keys to the Kingdom tour at MK while we are there, but I will have be at least 3 weeks non-weight bearing after the surgery, which will only be about 2 weeks before we go. I was told when we booked the tour that I would be allowed to go with either a wheelchair or electric scooter. My questions is has anyone done this, and how did it go if so?

We did the tour with my DM in a scooter and unlike other reports of the tour, we did not get to go on any rides, this applied to the entire tour group. I was kind of disappointed. I don't know if our experience was unique or not. DM is able to transfer and we let GS know that in advance.

I've gone on it twice before, and both times we rode rides...I think HM and POTC once and just POTC the next time. I will be able to transfer as long as I can take my crutches too.

people have posted on the disABILITIES Board about going on this tour.
It was not a problem as long as you let them know about it when making the reservation (which I see you apparently did; if you just asked about a wheelchair, call back and tell them you will have one). A 17 yr old will probably not be able to rent an ECV; the Disney parks and most of the off-site rental places require the renter/driver to be over 18.
The tour itself is accessible. If they do go on rides, the wheelchair can be brought up to the boarding area. A transfer would be needed for Pirates and/or Haunted Mansion and if she has crutches, they would be helpful for transfers.

HM wouldn't be open then anyway i'm presuming which means Small World takes its place and Small World does have boats capable of directly handling WCs (dunno about ECVs) but a lot of that would also depend on who's waiting before the group that may need the boats.

Thanks for the info! It's me (37) not DD 17 that will be having the surgery and need a way to get around, so the age and renting a scooter won't be a problem :)

Sorry:flower3:
I misread.
ECVs can't go on the Small World boat (at least as far as I know) but you still might want to wait for the wheelchair accessible boat because it has a ramp to get into the boat. That might be easier for you than trying to step down into the regular boat.

Good idea! I had surgery on this same ankle after my car accident 10 years ago, but I have forgotten how to walk on crutches so I have to start all over again. I thought about one of those knee walkers instead, but so soon after the surgery the doctor might not want me putting that much weight on any part of my leg. Maybe I'll do wonderful and he will let me be weight bearing in a walking cast before we go to Disney :)

Hello!

This thread is best for the disABILITIES board, so I'm moving it over there. Please check that board for further replies.

Happy planning!

I just did this tour in July. I brought my own ecv and really enjoyed the entire experience. We did go on the Jungle Cruise and the guide took over the narration. HM was closed, so no go on that one! I did let them know when I booked that I would be on the ecv.

I'm glad to see this thread! We're going back to WDW next May (already booked...yay!LOL) and I'm seriously considering this tour for my family; myself, DH, DSthen20, DSthen17, and Aunt Esther mid-70s.

Since renting the scooter on this last trip went so well I'm sure I'll be renting one again for next year's trip, and I'm very happy to see that I'll be able to use it for this tour. In fact, if I need a break from the chair, maybe Aunt Esther would welcome a break from walking. She's in excellent health and loves to walk, but I'd be more than happy to share the chair with her if the walking on this tour gets to be too much.

Any other experiences of this tour with a wheelchair or scooter?? :)

Does anyone have experience with scooter rentals outside of Disney? I am looking to rent one outside so I can have it in the resort also, and hopefully it will be delievered to WL for me.

I just used Walker Mobility a week or so ago (I found their name right here on the DISabilities Board); they had the scooter all ready at my resort when I checked in, and they picked it up after we checked out. They charged our credit card the exact amount we were told it would be. I'll definitely be using this company again in the future. http://www.walkermobility.com/

If you look in the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of the thread list, you will see a list of outside companies. The ones listed are the ones that DIS posters have recommended over the years. There are phone numbers and links for them on that thread. The most commonly used ones are Randy's, Care and Walker.

I ended up going with the caremobility site I found on the sticky. They do not offer crutch holders, does anyone have any ideas on carrying crutches around on the ECV? It's confirmed, my surgery is 6:30 next Tuesday, so I will definitely be in need of both the ECV and the crutches if I am going on this tour.

I know people have posted in the past that they used bungee cords.
You might also want to contact Care Mobility and ask if they have any suggestions.

I had "peroneal reconstructive surgery"....(Tenden and ligament repairs along with bone grooving) and did the tour in a wheelchair.....I hadn't had the surgery yet, but the night before I left on the trip I had hurt it and was on crutches and there was NO WAY I would have been able to get around with out the wheelchair.....I had NO problems at all.....our guide was great about making sure I could here and was right there will me. My husband and I didn't know how the tour would be, and it was fine and I'd do it again, NOT the surgery, but the tour or even Disney in a wheelchair!

We rode HM and JC and had no problems...we all boarded at the exit anyway.
