Keyless entry coming to The GF and Poly this month

My car works that way too, except it only unlocks the side you're on at first. For example, as a driver, I can only unlock my side, and then a second unlock attempt unlocks my whole car. It's a safety thing - that way in a dark parking lot someone else can't hop in your car with you, etc.

As a female traveler who frequently travels alone, that makes me uncomfortable. There's been times where I've hurried to my room because someone has seemed a little "off" nearby. I don't like the idea of someone else possibly being able to open my door before I get to it, etc. Seems like a security risk. I'm sure they have thought of work-arounds though... it's too easy to see the security issues.
On our car, the fob has to be within a certain number of feet of the car and the person carrying the fob has to touch the door handle in order to unlock the doors. They don't unlock automatically, thank goodness. That isn't a feature I want in my car or my resort door.

Having BlueTooth in the bands opens up a lot of possibilities. You can do most of what Bluetooth can do with active RFID but the hardware is more specialized. With Geofencing and Bluetooth LE there are a lot of things Disney could do. I posted a few years ago that there is no technological reason that the MBs sitting at a bus stop couldn't be used for optimizing bus routes, that guests couldn't get notifications when they are near a restaurant when a walk-up reservation opens up, or FP+ offers couldn't be used to route guests from busy areas of the park to less crowded areas.

With data and location awareness Disney could do way more than they are doing. The training wheels haven't really been pulled off of the MBs yet and the complete misunderstanding of what exactly MyMagic+ always was and why it was a highly successful data and infrastructure project.

So WDWNT is claiming that there will be NO bluetooth in the MagicBands. That this will be giving guests (who maybe don't like MB?) the option to open their doors via bluetooth via their MDE on their phone.

SO .............. yeah, this is way more trouble than just tapping it with your MB. Last I want to do is pull out my phone, unlock my phone, wait for Disney app to open, unlock Disney app and then tell it to unlock my door.

This is no plus to guests, just use your MB or keycard. What it is I don't know, but there is surely something in this for Disney since they have to change out all the door locks. No real plus for guests, no obvious cash generator but Disney won't spend money unless it plans to make money.

I dislike this plan for a more practical reason, security. As an IT professional with 37+ years of experience I know what kind of mischief I can do with technology. And Disney has a bad rep for being able to control the crap they love. Most people would never use a phone for anything if they knew how easy it is to get their data off the phone.

Other hotel chains have already done this... allowing guests to use phone to enter room. Hilton and Marriott are two I’ve encountered.

Not a terrible idea for guests without magic bands such as convention-goers or tin-foil-hat types who might avoid magic bands.

Image below is stock photo from Marriott site... not my account! :)

I'm going to have to resist my OCD tendency to make sure the door is closed and locked behind me when I leave the room.

My current vehicle finally broke me of that habit for my vehicle. The doors unlock when you touch the handle if the fob is within very close distance. Checking to make sure they were locked just unlocked them.
