We will be in Key West on Easter Sunday, and don't plan to do any excursions. Is there a lot we can see just by walking around on our own? To those who have done Key West this way, would you mind posting what you were able to do? Finally, how close are the Hard Rock Cafe and Margaritaville to the dock? Thanks!

We did Key West on our own. You can see a lot by walking around, depending on how hot it is. We ended up buying a daily pass for the Bone Island Shuttle ($7 each for all day riding). Not as many stops as the Trolley, but more cost efficient and you get to see more of Key West if you ride the entire circuit. We bought our tickets at the same booth as they sell the trolley tickets near the Key West Aquarium.

We also did Key West on our own and enjoyed it very much. We actually just walked around the town and didn't purchase any "tram" type transportation. Key West is very compact and you can easily see all of it on foot.

Many attractions are especially close to the dock. While there we visited the Hemingway House, Duval Street, the Southernmost Point, and several art galleries. We look forward to doing the same thing next weekend!

You can easily do Key West on your own. Don't forget to do the Conch Train Tour...it is excellent and now I hear you can get on and off to spend a little more time at certain sites.

Don't remember where hard rock is...but I know we walked to margaritaville. The ship is docked very close to the action.

We did Key West on our own last time, and we had a blast! It's the perfect port for strolling around and sightseeing. We took the trolley so hubby could get a photo at the southernmost point and so we could see the sights briefly. Then we returned to the Hemingway House on foot and walked around, enjoying treats like key lime shakes and fresh squeezed lemonade to ward off the heat. Then we returned to the ship and watch the cat man and the fire juggler from up on deck 10.
If you stick around in Mallory Square until sunset, look for the people selling fresh made guacomole. It is the BEST!!

We did Key West on our own and had a great time. We booked our trolley tickets online and took it over to the Southernmost Point (it was about 2 blocks away from it). Did that, the Butterfly conservatory, Hemmingway House and then walked back up Duval to check out all the shops etc. Went back to the ship to drop off our purchases (we had stopped and bought pop/water as well) and then went to the Key West Aquarium. Very easy to do on your own.

I have mentioned many times that I am more than happy to share anything you want to know about Key West since I am a 4 generation 'conch" (that is what they call us Key Westers :D )
the only thing that it cost is a self addressed LARGE envelope with about $3.75 worth of stamps on it and send it to me - I fill it up with coupons, discounts, maps, those that I recommend cause I know they are honorable and honest (which is hard to find with merchants on duval Street anymore) - I know cause I go down every couple of months to see family and friends and still keep checking all the new "stuff" that pops up ---those that I recommend do offer conch rates if you give them their business card with my name on it - NOPE I DON'T GET ANY THING FOR IT - its my way of making my hometown more comfortable for you while you are there -
You can send the envelope to the Perfect Gift, 6550 North Atlantic Avenue, cape Canaveral, Florida 32920 -----I fill it up and send it right back to you with no strings attached - you do save monies by having this information.
Hoped I was of help on this thread

Thanks to everyone for all the great ideas! It sounds like there will be plenty for us to do! I may even take you up on your offer, Shirley; how very kind of you!!

When we were there we took a shuttle bus that was air conditioned, if i remember right it was cheaper then the trolly that was not air conditioned. but i don't think it was a guided tour.

Yes, S.C., the bus is air conditioned and the trolleys/conch train are not--the bus is called the Bone Island Shuttle and it is $7.00 per day. There is also a regular Key West bus system that can be used to get around.
