We will have 2 children, ages 4 and 6. What can we do with them without taking an excursion? Thinking of trolley tour and/or aquarium. Are there any playgrounds or mini golf centers near town or in walking distance? Any other suggestions other than shopping?

Just read that kids club pagers have a 2 mile radius. Does that cover most of the shopping area in town if we decide to leave one or both onboard?

the kids might enjoy the conch train better. It is open air - and the guide we had was pretty funny.

as far as pagers, I am guessing that you should be ok around the mallory square area and parts of duval street.

Hey there,
First did you send for all the pamplets that I have offered at no cost except a self address (with about $3.00 postage) 10" envelope? If not email me and I will be more than happy to help - also when is your cruise? I am going down next month and will be doing a lot of in and out of different places to get merchants to give me discount coupons for the cruisers -
There is a butterfly musuem that is due to open if it hasn't already at the south end of Mallory Square - from MS to the sothermost House is exalty 2 miles - KW is a 2x4 island --
Unfortunalty Key West is not too inviting for children - it is an adult's playground - the conch train and the aquarium is awesome IF the aquarium has been renovlated - haven't been in there in years - the ONLY playground for the children is at Clarence Higgs beach which is at the end of White Street (South end) - going up the light house is a little too much for the children for they have to climb I forget how many steps but it is more than a child can do - the minature golf was torn down and condos went up in its place - I just asked Norm if he could think of any place and he repeated what I just said - it is a shame that more isn't done for the children in KW or who visit there - but again it is a party town.
I am so sorry that I couldn't help more, but if you can think of anything you are most welcomed to contact me.
Always
Shirley

We will be there on Sept. 15 (we are on the Sept. 14th western cruise). Will the Butterfly thing be open then? That sounds like fun, I have a daughter who befriends butterflies. They will come and just sit on her finger.

Can we walk to that, or is it too far (my twins will be turning 9 on the cruise).
Thanks!
Debra

Hi,

I had a 5 and 3 yr old that stayed on the boat while we did a 2 hour excursion. Honestly, we were farther than 2 miles out and really had no worries about the kids. If your children adjust well to new environments, you should be fine. Mine loved the Club so much the first day, they were eager to go back.

My suggestion for you is maybe put both in the same group. My two boys were in the 3-4 yr olds along with their younger 3 cousins. Worked out great! Ask the counselors what they would suggest, as they are very accommodating.

You and your husband may enjoy 1-2 hours on your own in port. I didn't find any of the ports except Castaway Cay "kid friendly". I know there is a mini golf place in Cozumel, but other than that not much other than shopping.

I will call Key West today to find out exalty if the musuem is opened or not - I know it will be a beautiful place when finished - there will be butterflies from all over the world and should be not only very interesting, but educational also - it is located about 1 and three quarters of a mile from Mallory Square - two blocks North from the Southernmost House -
Sorry there aren't more things for children to do in Key West - investors are more interested in the proceeds that the older generations - generates.
Always

Thanks for the replies. We'll probably check out the aquarium and play it by ear (kid's moods) if we do a tour. I'm happy walking around town and shopping. Thanks again.

We were on the May 11th cruise with our 4 year old twins. We did the conch train tour and our kids were very bored. All my snacks ran out within the first 20 minutes and we spent the next 40 minutes hearing "can we get off now". We're considering another Western cruise next year and have already decided to do Key West on our own rather than pay DCL. Everything is so close to the port you can walk to it -even with little ones. We're going to do the aquarium or the shipwreck historium, get some ice cream, window shop then head back to the ship.
