Hello Key West experts,

Where is the end of US1? Is it walking distance from where the ship docks. I am interested in this landmark for a "kodak" moment. Last year, I was unable to figure our where it was and the "fam" did not cooperate to help me find the famous marker. I thought if I knew ahead of time, I could convince them to join me for a photo opportunity. Thanks, Bee

We saw it when we were on the trolley tour. It is pretty far from the dock - not walking distance at all. Check out this site and click on view Key West Map (on the far right side).

Key West Trolley

The dock is near #2 on the extreme left side of the map and US1 is near #23 on the extreme right side of the map.

We walked from the dock to the Catholic Church and the landmark that says "Southernmost point" which is the end of US1.
I had my son (8) and my Mom (74) with me - it was hot in October, but we brought water with us and took breaks to look around the town.

IF you have time constraints, don't walk, but if you want to stretch your legs and get a better idea of where the natives live and work in Key West, then start "hiking"!!!

Rae, looks like somebody goofed on the sign. Actually the "southern most point" in the US is located on the big island of Hawaii. I can assume the sign at Key West means the southern most point on the mainland. :sunny:

Hi you will find the ending of US 1 on the corner of Whitehead and Fleming Street - it is marked on marker with a BIG zero -
At one time it always in front of the Key West Courthouse that is just right accross the street in front of a huge Banyon tree - in fact the story goes that once upon a time the marker was taller than the Banyon tree - anyhow it has been moved several times, but never far from the original stop - being that it is in the 500 block, would say that it is a short distance from Mallory Square - from Mallory Square get on to Whitehead street and just walk about 4 blocks and there you are.
Anyhow another tidbit about my hometown.
Always

My mistake - I was thinking you were asking where US1 comes into Key West. Makes sense that it would go on to the other end of the island. Good thing we have the real experts like Shirley!:D

Hi Dave - thanks for the map of Key West - I love it - now the big question is what is "Broken Glass beach" - that is a killer for laughs - I loved, well Tia did, loved the Dog beach - it is located right on Higgs Beach by the White Street Pier - I was amazed of the care those that bring their animals there, take care of it - man oh man - shocked the daylights out of me - Tia loved being there and it gave me a chance for her to experience getting her paws in Key West sand - anyhow thanks for sharing - it is so funny - my oldest sister, Rose, was born right in the house where the Zero marker is in front of now - I loved it when it was at the courthouse - it looked so much more important there - had a big sign also saying something like this road ends in Maine USA - when we were kids, all the kids wanted to take US1 and go see the ending - I have always wondered where in Maine it ended.
Anyhow have a great day and thanks again for the interesting map.
Always
your friend
Shirley

I walked to the sign with my 10 year old son (we actually walked past the sign on the way to the southernmost point). It did not seem that far, but we walk alot at home for exercise so may not be the best to ask. I wouldn't attempt with smaller children. Have fun!

definitely within walking distance....nice photo op but nothing else is there but a sign. I guess I expected a party or something!!:teeth:

Approximately how long would it take to walk there? This might be a good way to walk off some of the extra food we will be eating onboard!

Thanks for your response and the great map! I hope my gang will walk with me there.
2 weeks and counting, Bee
