When you check in at your resort, the CM will ask if you want to set up a room charge. You can back up the room charge with a credit card, debit card (with VISA/MC logo), cash, travelers checks, even Disney Dollars.

You can set the room charge account for any amount you want up to a pre-set limit: $500 for Value resorts, $1K for Moderate resorts, and $1.5K for Deluxe resorts.

If you use a credit or debit card to back up the room charge, they will swipe the card just to make sure it is on an active account, but THEY DO NOT PLACE A HOLD ON THE ACCOUNT. Repeat: No hold is placed on any credit card or bank account.

You card is not charged until one of the two following conditions occurs: you reach your purchasing limit; you check out, or check-out time occurs.

At that time, the full amount charged on your room charge will be charged to your credit or debit card.

So it sounds like you thought you'd need to put up a credit card for the room charge but then don't want the credit card charged but wanted to use the debit card to pay the bill. I hope you can see now that you can just use your debit card to begin with.

A few strategies you can use ....
  • set a small-ish amount for your room charge, like $100 or $200 at a time. That way, you will never be charging or debiting too much at any one time
  • check with the front desk frequently (you can request an up-to-the-minute printout) and/or keep your receipts to keep track of your spending on the room charge. Pay off the room charge when it reaches a certain amount, and set up a new one

By the way, when you reach your limit, the room charge will no longer work. However, they make it very easy to fix this. A procedure is set up that you can just call your resort's front desk (made easy because everyone and their goldfish has a cellphone these days) and verbally authorize a new room charge account, backed by the same credit/debit card you already have on-file with them.

Please post back with any other questions!

I think they charge it at the end of every day, but not positive. You would think I would know this with the amount of time I've been there, lol.

Sorry, not correct. As I posted above (which wasn't there when you were typing :) ), it gets charged either at check-out time OR when you reach your limit, not before.

Make sure you check your room charges because it can be embarassing when you have reached your limit and have no other form of payment with you. I'm not sure why but at Pop they told us we had to come over to the desk to reset the limit it would have been alot easier for them to do it over the phone.

You must not have kids to tend to in the morning, because it was while I was typing, just had to stop for a minute to tend to my 9 year old. Sorry I was wrong.
Have a nice day anyway.

I wasn't "coming down on you," but I just wanted the OP to have the correct info.:goodvibes

Strangely enough, you'll usually get more accurate info here than at WDW itself. At WDW (in-person or by phone), you're dealing with one person, and that person probably doesn't know everything, every little detail of everything. But here on the DIS you potentially have THOUSANDS of people reading your question and providing answers. You might get some incorrect info here, too, but there are usually lots of people around to set the record straight. If in each of 1000 trials you get an answer from 10 people and separately answers to the same questions from a single CM, chances are the consensus will be more accurate than the single CM.

For example, before my first trip in May 2005 I learned right here that the room charge limits by level of resort are UPPER limits, that you can set a room charge for any amount UP TO and including that amount, that it doesn't have to be only for that full amount. During my November 2006 trip, I'd already set up an $800 room charge at POFQ. Knowing I was nearing my limit, I called the front desk to set another one up for about $400 (I had just a few days left). The CM told me that was impossible, that they ONLY set up room charges for $1,000 or they don't set them up at all. I asked how I was able to set it up for $800 several days earlier, and she said she'd never heard of that before. I asked her to check with a manager; she did, and then she set up my next room charge for the $400.

I wouldn't have known that info were it not for some DISer somewhere. Same for almost all of my other WDW knowledge. (Except for how twitterpated I'd feel when Jasmine leaned on me to take a picture at CRT breakfast -- grrrr!)

Sorry I was snapping at you this morning. I guess I need to go to Disney next week and chill out, oh that's right, I AM :rotfl:

Short story here... On my first trip I used my debit card instead of a credit card for the Keys to the World card. At checkout the debit card was charged a huge amount, way beyond my daily limit. During our last day, at EPCOT before we left for the plane, I tried to use that debit card at various places, and at each place they had to call the 800 number on back to get approval. I was super embarrased until one CM at Rose and Crown told me that it happens all the time. :rolleyes1

So, be warned about debit cards. I like the idea one of the previous posters had about setting small limits. Sounds like a good idea. :thumbsup2
