Ifm going on the Western Caribbean cruise next week. Any suggestions as to where I can get the best Key Lime Pie in Key West?

Thanks!!

I'm not sure you can get a reliable recommendation for the best Key lime pie. Read this quote from one of my old favorite guide books:

From The Florida Keys, 1993-94 Edition, by Joy Williams, (c) 1993 by Joy Williams, published by Random House

Key West restaurants are notoriously unreliable. The place to be one season will be empty as a weekday church the next. Proprietors have nervous breakdowns. Chefs are shot. People get bored. The kitchen help's minds wander to thoughts of affairs, windsurfing, or cocaine. Restaurants are as capricious as the weather, as quickly changeable as the tides. And yet the number of pretty and ambitious restuarants here are very impressive and should be investigated with enthusiam. All the restaurants serve Key lime pie but they have all become somewhat wary of recommending it. Really good Key lime pie is elusive. The bars have begun serving Key lime shooters with enthusiasim. They taste exactly like what you've been looking for but they're more fun.

That being, said, a very quick web search turns up one place that looks promising...

Rough Guides (travel.roughguides.com) has an opinion. They say the best Key lime pie is at Kelly's... the restaurant owned by Kelly McGillis.

Oh my goodness - my most favorite pie - I make the best but since you won't be here in Cape Canaveral to have a sample - Key West is the next best place to go - first off if the coloring of the pie is not yellow looking forget it - it isn't really Key Lime Pie -
Now where to get it - well you have Vicki's restaurant on Staples Avenue (this is the locals hangout) they also have what is called Queen of all puddings which is bread pudding (awesome) - then you have B's Restaurant on Bertha Avenue which is located off Flagler Avenue - I will have some Key West books this weekend with a great deal of information in them. I also wanted to mention a "conch" opened up a very interesting shop on Eaton Street called Strunk's Book Shop that has a lot of history and a Conch's cookbook - hope that this will help some - I really hope you enjoy your trip and I sure hope everyone will post something about this first Western trip as to how it was liked or disliked.
Take care and have a wonderful cruise.
Always,
Shirley

Are we going to Key West - if so let me know and will meet ya down there - ok the best of best for cafe con leche is two awesome places - first one is 5 Brothers on Southard Street and Grinnell Street - one of the best also with your coffee have bollitos
also known as bollos and conch fritters - now a "sit down" place is the La Dechosia Bake shop on White Street between United St and Truman Street - all your locals go there and their latin pasteries are to die for (well not really) - anyhow the Key Lime Pies can be found in Key West if you go where I suggested -
Siboney Rest on Catherine Street is awesome in all latin foods and deserts.
Hope all is well your way buddy -hugsssssssssssss to you and yours.
Luv ya
Shirley

If you're going on the Inaugural Western Cruise (5/11/02), feel free to join us over on our main discussion thread:

You might not want to read all of it since you will probably miss the cruise if you do, but we are a fun bunch and have all kinds of interesting things planned for DIS'ers! :D

Shirley,I wish i could tast your a sample Key Lime Pie.

We will leave 9th in NJ.

I cant WAIT!!

:D :D

When we visited there a couple years ago while on DCL's Eastern cruise, we had chocolate covered frozen key lime pie on a stick! It was great, but I can not remember the place - sorry.

Shirley, so can we expect Key Lime Pie delivered to our rooms?????? lol - I do wish you guys could have joined us on this cruise. It would have been so fun putting a face with a name and a voice.

I just made key lime pie for the first time, and there is nothing easier to make!

First, find a bottle of key lime juice (in the baking aisle) It should have a recipe on it. DON'T USE persian lime juice or anything except key lime juice.

Mix 1/2 cup lime juice, 1 14-oz. can of sweetened condensed milk and 3 egg yolks together until smooth.

Pour into a prepared graham cracker crust.

Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Take out of oven, let sit for 10 minutes. Then refrigerate for 1 hour or more.

Serve with whipped cream on top.

YUM!

I copied down the recipe. A great dessert to make for the week before, to get us in "the mood" (No, not for that, for cruising, silly!)

Robin you don't know how much I wish I could have been on this cruise - my tongue is hanging out in gasping - with Norm's health problems sometimes it is hard to get away for too long - anyhow if I can possibilty make it - will try to get a Key lime pie to the group sailing the 11th over to the Radisson or will get it to the ship somehow - my pies are made with the real Key Limes (my sister has a real one in her back yard) anyhow lets see how things go - Robin are you going on this maiden Western cruise?
Anyhow know thoughts and prayers will be with everyone - I know it is going to be a real fun one.
Take care
Always
Shirley
