Kevin, what were the two books you mentioned in chat last night? You said there were two books that were the best you had read. Were they Ken Follett books?

Pillars of the Earth and it's sequel World Without End.

They are both by Ken Follett.

When I first heard about them, I was sure I wasn't going to like them. I started the first and was immediately hooked. I read in the car, in line at the supermarket....anyplace I could put three spare minutes together.

I dont know that ever mourned finishing a book before.....but I was truly sad to finish Pillars, so I immediately jumped into World Without End.

For the first few chapters, I was disappointed because it takes place in the same physical place, but two hundred years later and the characters are different. The disappointment lasted only a short time and I was engrossed yet again.

I had the same feeling again....a sense of mourning....not because the books were sad....but because they were finished and I loved these characters and this place so much.

The books are about buiilding a Gothic Cathedral in the 13th and 15th century, but please.....do not let that keep you from diving in.

I dont know anyone that has read these books that wasn't enthralled.

Enjoy.

Thanks so much for the recommendation Kevin. I'm just finishing up The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. This is the second time I've read the book. I think it is really just so clever the way it is put together. Anyhow, I'm looking for a new book, and so I think I'll pick up Pillars of the Earth.

BTW: The whole family enjoyed "Mama Mia" last night. I have to say the scenes of the Greek Islands were gorgeous. It looked like Meryl Streep was fooling around on vacation and decided "what the heck, let's make a movie."

When can we get a podcast cruise to the Greek Islands?

Might give those a go Kevin :thumbsup2

Awww! I missed book chat?! :sad1: Stupid sinus infection..... I finally can make it and I am to sick to stay....

But I have gotten the Pillars of Earth just have not read it, I will have to move it to the top of my to read pile!

I'll have to pick those books up for DH. We just watched Mamma Mia a couple weeks ago. In the week that we had it from Blockbuster, DD watched it about 7 times. She loves listening to the soundtrack. I'm sure her and Mindy could be best friends :)

I read those two books this past year. They are WONDERFUL! I recommend them to everyone I know that enjoys books.

Oh, I loved The Time Traveller's Wife it was awesome. I'd also go on a podcast cruise to the Greek Islands anytime - the scenary in Mama Mia was amazing.

I'll absolutely watch Mamma Mia....on "mute".

Ohhh, I loveeeee Pillars of the Earth! I've been debating on whether or not to read World Without End. Part of me is hesitant to because of the entire character issue Kevin mentioned. Will I be disappointed? Should I just go ahead and read it anyway?

Always on the lookout for new titles. Thanks for the suggestion. I've already added them to "My Booklist" at my local library's website.

Made myself a note on these books, always on the lookout for good reads.

World Without End takes place in the same location and the characters from POTE are referenced frequently.

It will take you a few chapters to care about these new characters like you did with POTE....but you will. I think you will feel the same way at the emd of WWE. You will be very sorry to leave these characters behind.

There are many books I love.....John Irving's Hotel New Hamhampsire comes to mind....but I have never liked fictional characters as much as those in POTE and WWE.

Some day I will go back and revisit them.

Thanks, Kevin! I think I am going to give it a go now that I am done with grad school. I'll definitely have a bit more time to plunge wholeheartedly.

On another note, anybody here read the Lucy Stone mysteries? I picked up Mistletoe Murder a few weeks before Christmas and finished it early this week. I really wanted to like the book, but found it so slow and even boring at times. It had barely a hint of mystery to it.

There are a bunch more books in the series. Does anybody know if they get better?

Okay, just bought both the books from Borders. My B'day present to myself.

Even though I've read both....I'm envious that you get to start at the beginning.

I'm not working on a comission....I just truly enjoyed these books.

I was obsessed.

Honestly by the amount of Nintendo Wii's, Animal Crossing's and books we buy due to your recommendation, you should seriously be getting commission! :lmao:

Someone should track how the sales on these items go up after the podcast mentions them...like Oprah!

Seriously, they are very good books and I mourned them when they were done because I enjoyed them that much. He just invites you in and wraps you up in the storyline so well. But I must say after I read those two I tried to read some of his other stuff and it didn't really appeal to me.

I just finished Marley & Me maybe I should go back and reread these!
