Keurig...you can't DO BETTER?

What do you all think of the mini verses the other models? You have to add water every time to the mini, right?

I like that the Vue (I think) does lattes but that one is just crazy amounts of money. So I am struggling over what model to get.

I think the Vue is in response to the regular cup patents expiring and other companies (like San Fransisco Bay) making their own cups to fit the regular Keurigs. I mean why change the cup shape unless its to stop people from having a choice to buy a different brand?

We are "coffee snobs", but to get a good cup of coffee from a regular brewer we have to brew at least 1/2 pot for the water/coffee ratio to work right. And then we ended dumping 1/2 of it because we couldn't drink it fast enuf before it got burned/bitter sitting on the burner plate.

We actually drink all the coffee that is brewed thru the keurig so that is less waste for us-and it stopped us from grabbing a good cup if coffee on the way to work in the mornings.

And I've never had to use 5 kcups to get a "venti" size cup of coffee.

My husband has one...I don't drink coffee. HE DOES BIG TIME... :surfweb: LOL However just the other day ...he said that when it dies and we hear they do faster than regular coffee pots...he won't get another. He agrees the K cups are expensive and he even uses the MY K CUP on the weekends when he has more time. He likes it, but the coffee cups are not cheap by any means even on sale.

We use the reusable cup everyday and just buy a few k cups for guests.I can't imagine going through 10 a day?!?!:scared1: that's a ton of $$$!!!

Exactly what we do!

I have to agree with other posters, there are many things filling our landfills that I find far worse than k-cups. Disposable diapers and plastic bags are my top peeves.

Only in America will people line up to pay $100-200 for a machine that provides the privilege of spending $25-38 per pound for stale coffee in pods that can only be brewed at the incorrect temperature and then dumped in a landfill.

Yes, this is what's wrong with America. We're willing to trade quality for convenience and we've convinced ourselves we're better off.

Only in America would someone have so little to worry about that they care about the temperature strangers on the internet brew their coffee.

If this is the case-them I'm happy to say that I enjoy doing it. :)

That's the great thing about America. If you don't like the product, you don't have to buy it or use it. Those of us who DO like it, will buy and use it happily.

For a while, DH and I were stopping at Dunkin Donuts two or three times a day (each) to get a cup of coffee. That's a lot of money and a lot of styrofoam cups. Using the Keurig, we stopped going to Dunkin Donuts almost completely (we go maybe once every two weeks now), so even at 50cents a cup for the Keurig, we are saving a ton of money, and now there are no styrofoam cups hitting the landfill either, but yes, the kcups are ther, but sometimes I use the eko brewer thing instead.

The individual cups work better for us because DD drinks french vanilla, I drink Colombian and DH drinks only decaf. If we used the 'regular' pot, I'd have to brew three pots to get three cups of coffee in the morning. That takes a long time and would waste a lot of coffee. And its just not good to let the pot sit until later when you want another cup, it never tastes as good after it's been sitting around. As for the 'half a cup' statements: I have a brewer that brews at 10 oz cup, that's not a half a cup, in my opinion. DH actually runs the 10 oz twice into his big 24 oz mug, so he uses half as many kcup as I do.

However for those who care, Keurig is aware of the issue. OP, have you even read this?

Yes, I have read it. But, of course they are going to say what people want to hear from them ON THEIR WEBSITE!!!

K cups aren't recyclable and they aren't compostable. Keurig's website gives the environment a bunch of lip service, but it amounts to nothing substantial. They are just using gilded language to state that they have no solution whatsoever at this time.

And the reasoning for me becoming more aware of this is because one of my SIL- her husband manages and helps to run a Waste management and recycling center in a very large city.

Just recently there was a 'waste management/recycling' meeting between a LOT of people who are experiencing issues with the same things.

In that meeting/confrence, they had a group of scientists and researchers come in to talk to them about emmisions. These scientists used CURRENT, UP TO DATE products to study what products gave off more emmisions and which were the most harmful to our earth.

1 K Cup gives off the same emmissions as three plastic bags.

2 k cups give off the same emmissions as 1 diaper

That's all I remember. There was a long list of what they compared KCups to...

And yes- there are more important things to focus on- but I am a firm believer that we all need to do SOMETHING. And not everyone can tackle peace in the Mid east or that we can all cure cancer.

I can get people to write to Keurig though and request that they stop THINKING about doing it and FINALLY GET IT DONE...They've had the same statement for YEARS and still, nothing has been changed.

We use these a lot - coffee is great and they are paper filters for the Kcup

Though I don't think it's anyone's business what we drink in the morning. I know people who go to Dunkin Donuts every day for their coffee and are contributing all those cups to the landfills. I'm sure there are things you waste that I don't, and I could lecture you about as well. I hope you didn't use disposable diapers for your babies or never used sanitary napkins for your period either.
Excellent point..But there are products that the crunchy granola types use for their cycle that you're better off not knowing about.:faint::crazy2::rotfl2:

Clearly you don't understand R&D, things don't just happen because someone wants them too. As far as what they put on their website, if you believe that the company is evil and is just telling people what they want to hear, and are looking to destroy the earth with their convenient coffee delivery system, by all means knock yourself out. I don't really subscribe to conspiracy theories and paranoia so I'll just take them at their word.

What are these "emissions" you are talking about?

Actually I don't need any convincing, the convenience, which I can afford, is definitely making me better off :)

We've been fighting this with my employer ever since they installed K-cup machines all over.

Our company is known for being GREEN so it is so funny they choose to overlook this non-recycle item that is used sometimes three times a day by each employee.

What are these "emissions" you are talking about?

I do understand it quite well in fact, because my husband is an R&D director for a local factory that produces plastics and they have had to change ALL of their products to be enviornmentally friendly and able to be recycled. They had to make the change, or loose customers. That was that.

Emissions are gases produced by a product after it sits for a while- like in the landfill. These 'gases' contribute to global warming/climate changes...they are produced by a lot of products that cannot be recycled...plastic bags, diapers, KCups...hundreds of products. And they are all problems.

This thread was not started to 'fight about keurig and if it makes good or bad coffee.' it was started to raise awareness that KCups have become the number 1 or number 2 problem for landfills- which is a fact that was given to me along with factual information from someone who manages a large city waste management and recycling facility.

I did not, ever ask people to 'stop using keurigs' I asked people to become aware that this is ONE of many issues we can HELP to fix by sending them an e-mail or writing a letter.

MANY, MANY, MANY companies have been FORCED to become more environmentally friendly...auto industry, large corporations and many buisnesses have had to comply. Why should keurig be any different?

Wow, now you're talking about K-cups contributing to global warming...IF there really is global warming, I'm pretty sure factories and automobiles play a much bigger role than tiny little plastic cups sitting in a landfill.

I loved the convenience at first, but then the amount of garbage it generated started to wear on me, hubby and I have at least 2 cups each in the morning. I try to reduce my impact no matter where I can. Some items like disposable diapers CANNOT be avoided if your child is in daycare (like 2 of my 3 were), but I can choose to spend the extra time to make a pot of coffee.
I personally think for the cost of $30+ per pound the coffee (and I've tried MANY flavors, brands) does not taste that great and is therefore not worth the convenience to me. However for someone in a household that is the lone coffee drinker it makes sense to them.

I also noticed due to the convenience of the machine I drank ALOT more than I normally would, upwards to 5 cups a day.
