Keurig reason to shun the new VGF resort studios--a rant

Wait are people under the impression that Keurigs use some kind of instant powder that is dissolved inside the K-cup? It's a smaller form factor but it's the same exact coffee grounds that you'd put in a drip brewer.

Maybe they are confused by some kcups that do have powder inside, such as for fake chai lattes(yuch) or Swiss Mocha Hot chocolate. The regular coffee kcups are as you say, coffee grounds.

I used the Keurig at Hilton Head a couple of weeks ago to make myself a cup of WDW's 50th anniversary Joffrey's coffee and it was just fine. Joffrey's WDW branded Kcups. They are not in the rooms there but available free in Big Murgies Den.

Although I certainly prefer a press pot, I'm not so snobbish that I can't enjoy a regular cup. The Joffrey's coffee is quite good as hotel coffee goes and much better than what they served before Joffrey's.

And for those toddling over to Gaspy's in the mornings, Joffrey's is what you are getting, just from a commercial machine, which doesn't necessarily make it better. Coffee doesn't necessarily age well.

I am glad that I drink tea in the morning. Just bring my electric kettle and my loose leaf or high quality bagged whole leaf tea, and I am set. I have actually brought my own tea bags into the park when it's cold enough for me to want tea. Unless it's from some of the signature restaurants. I like coffee, but it has to be good, which pretty much means I don't drink it most of the time. Keurigs on the other hand just drive me up the wall with all of the waste created. Plus, the coffee tastes like garbage. I don't care what others do, but let me have my tea.

I do love our French press though. My husband has started making cold brew to cut down on the acid stomach in the morning. It's really easy with the French press. However, he just drinks tea on vacation, since it's easier.

I’m sure why this bothers you? A family of 5 can easily spend $150 for lunch and dinner at quick service, which isn’t anything special for the most part. Over seven nights, thats $1000+. Why are they cousin Eddie, who’s a lowlife by the way, for wanting to make their own food in their timeshare?
I was going to say the exact same thing!!! $12 for lunch for the family? Point me in that direction. 😂. Not on property for sure. Maybe at Mickey D’s From the $1 menu.
We will sometimes bring our electric pancake griddle and crockpot. Definitely our own steamer pot for crab legs or lobsters. We don’t like wasting time and money at sit down restaurants. We still have our favorites that we go to. But can’t eat like that all the time. We like to get deluxe dining for the first part of a split stay when we don’t have a kitchen.

No, we're not confused at all.

Here's why we're not:
Table salt looks like a powder compared with other than Keurig coffee grinds. Packed into a K-cup, the grind Keurigs require really does appear powdery.

My objection is more what a Keurig machine does to what might, brewed differently, not be such dreadful coffee.

...Keurig's don't brew coffee, they brew colored coffee-scented water from plastic cups filled with powder. Mr. Coffee ain't much better tho...gotta hit the 200+ degree mark for good coffee.

Lowlight aptly described how some people, me included, regard the way Keurig machines attempt to brew coffee.

They run the water through the grounds too quickly and not hot enough to get a decent extraction.

Clearly you, Judique and Captain America, disagree. Kindly stop suggesting lowlight and I are "confused." We simply strongly dislike Keurig-brewed coffee.

Oh, I'm now convinced there is great confusion.

I prefer the kcups especially when we have opposing coffee tastes in the house (medium vs extra bold) which means two separate bags of coffee grounds and two separate brew cycles. I do like a pot when I want to heat my coffee up. I agree the kcups get cold quickly. Gasparillas is also not that close to the villas when I want a cup of coffee immediately upon waking up.

Yes, I know you can buy reusable K-cups and bring your own coffee to fill them. Dunno why anyone valuing good coffee would want to. Those things can't make an acceptable cup no matter what you try in them.

If you haven't done it, you can't know that.

That's what I used to do when I had a keurig in my house, and it was good. When we were going to Universal often I put a couple of them in my owners locker and made my own coffee, and it was good.

My objection is that the Keurigs I've had the misfortune to be subjected to (two households of relatives adore the thing and have nothing but) make a max-warm but not truly hot cup of dreck.

Cool. Maybe have them read the manual to use it better? Maybe have them clean it out? Judging by relatives who might be misusing their machines isn't the best way to KNOW what something is like. I was at a holiday inn on Saturday and the water would barely come out of the machine in the room. So it was making something like syrup. That doesn't mean that ALL keurigs make coffee-syrup. It means that the one in my room wasn't working well.

Have them check their machines.

It does sound like you have some very specific needs when it comes to coffee, so perhaps just realize that your needs are on the "extra" side, and that those of us with slightly less intense coffee needs (I'm currently doing a pourover type of coffee using a pyrex cup measure with the water that comes out of the hot side of my water cooler) aren't wrong for doing so.

Is this going by those same relatives again? What brand are they using? Because that is not my experience at all, even when using up the kcups that came with my old machine, or using ones at other hotels.

If making your own coffee in your room, a jug of spring water makes the difference.

Absolutely.

Ugh this is my least favorite thing about DVC. People spend $60,000 for a lifetime of vacations in a $900 hotel room and then act like Cousin Eddie to avoid spending $12 on lunch.

It's a timeshare. It's our home, not a hotel room. If we WANT to bring a variety of things to make us happy while at our timeshare home, it's totally fine.

My cousin and I do resort-only stays and we tend to like in-room food more than outside food. When we have full family trips we love making breakfasts and dinners in the room. It's a lot nicer than everyone being tense about how much money a not-as-good meal is costing.

I’m a bit surprised that Disney uses Keurigs in their hotel rooms & now in VGF2 given their attempts to be ’green.’ They took away individual toiletries & gave us huge bottles affixed to the shower walls claiming the little individual bottles weren’t green enough yet they are only providing plastic k-cups for coffee? & no, using a different kind of plastic d/n make those plastic kcups green.

The thing that makes kcups generally unrecyclable is the individual local recycling center's capabilities or lack of capabilities. There ARE municipalities that can recycle them. Since disney pretty much does their own recycling, they might very well have figured out how to do it.

I don’t like Keurigs because they are incredibly wasteful and terrible for the environment.

The machines are no more wasteful or terrible than any other coffee maker. Bring a reusable kcup and your own coffee, and you don't even have the filter paper to worry about that you do with a coffeepot.

And for those toddling over to Gaspy's in the mornings, Joffrey's is what you are getting, just from a commercial machine

Ayep.
I like Joffrey's; I even just had some shipped to me. It's better than the old Disney stuff or nescafe.

They are much more wasteful than a normal coffee filter and grounds. There is a plastic cup that ends up in the landfill for every single cup made. I quit using a Keurig years ago when I realized how terrible they were for the earth, I’m not worried about myself, just everyone else on the planet who doesn’t give a single thought to their consumption and waste.

There are many brands that are sold in biodegradable materials. My favorite is San Francisco Bay "Fog Chaser."

Bingo.

Disney has one stream recycling.

In 2020 Keurig completed a change to polypropylene plastic as represented by the #5 inside the triangle on the bottom of the pod. These are now all recyclable depending on what YOUR community recycles. I'm proud that my community has a single stream recycling center.
The downside is that the pod must be separated from the grounds to not contaminate the single stream materials.

As a dedicated to saving the world and trying to make it better for my grandchildren and future generations, I take apart my kcups and use the grounds on my garden and flowers, and I rinse the plastic and foil as they must be somewhat clean to enter the recycling stream.

So they are no longer terrible for the earth. It's up to the people who use them to handle them properly. And this thread has one possibly good outcome: it led me to check for a tool to open the pods since I was struggling with a pair of scissors. I found that Amazon sells what looks like a handy little gadget for opening the pod. I just ordered it so hope it works. The brand name is Medelco.

That sounds right up my alley. I see it on Amazon. Thank you for the recommendation.

On this topic, let me share a recommendation that you may scoff at initially, but bear with me. There are a couple companies nowadays doing some really interesting things with instant coffee, and it isn't your folgers crystals of old. The best I've tried from the new companies has been from Swift Cup. Its actually pretty dang good - and can't be simpler when away from home and don't have all my normal brewing gear with me. Just heat up some water (need to use good water!), stir in the freeze dried coffee powder or whatever you call it, and have a dang decent cup. No worrying about k-cups or fiddling with trying to get a decent cup out of a Mr. Coffee.

Interesting and I’ll have to check it out. My issue is really because I drink almost 2 pots a day..I know, I know…so one cup at a time is not going to work! Lol

You know all of us non coffee drinkers think yall insane

Insane? Perhaps. But if this is what insanity looks like, I hope there is no cure. I can't fathom a world without coffee. 8-)

I've often wondered how people can live without coffee. Lol

We love a good cup of coffee(local coffee shop NOT Starbucks), but we are okay dealing with a Keurig during our travels. Keurig with the right pods taste much better to me than drip brewed Joffrey's(and a million times better than the Joffrey's dirt brewed in the parks). Even in 1-bedrooms with a drip machine we still bring our Keurig. We just kinda accept at Disney we will have just "ok" coffee.
