Keurig K Cups

Can someone please explain to me HOW these little plastic cups are not further damaging the environment. Don't tell me they can be recycled unless you also tell me what post consumer products you use to make up for your increased contribution to the landfills.

How are thousands of other items used every day doing any different? The environment has much, much bigger concerns than little k-cups. We've got a 95-gallon recycle can in the garage full to the brim of recyclable materials for pickup tomorrow, but if that doesn't work I'm sure we can find somewhere you can stick our used k-cups. ;) :flower3: :)

For those concerned about the effect on the environment use a refillable KCup!
I use the refillable KCup. You just rinse it between uses and use your favorite regular ground coffee. I do this for two reasons 1) it's much cheaper than Pre filled Kcups and 2) my favorite flavored coffee doesn't come in a prefilled cup:hippie:

Crisis averted.

Why in the world would you have that much recyclable material? The idea is to eliminate waste and to reuse. Waste not want not, kwim? K-cups are not recyclable, btw. And-as my very smart grandmother used to say to me when I came up with some weak, smartarse answer, "poor excuse, better than none." One of the biggest concerns the environment faces is ignorant humans squandering it's resources. You have heard of, I'm sure, the "Reuse, Reduce, Recycle" motto? Doesn't seem like you have embraced the two other R's and are using the Recycle as an poor excuse to waste. Don't send me your K-cups-you've already elected to put them where the sun don't shine. The landfill. :rolleyes1

Yes..it makes perfect sense to finger wag at the person who responsibly takes recyclables and recycles for the amount they have. It would be much better if they didn't recognize recyclable materials then, right?

If you are worried about the impact of k cups on the environment I would recommend you not buy a Keurig and/or not utilize K cups. I for one am not remotely concerned about it.

I've started using San Francisco Bay One Cups. They aren't Kcups but fit fine in the Keurig and they are cheaper. Fog Chaser is my favorite. They have no plastic cup, just the round top and a filter.

It's obvious you are not remotely concerned. I would never use a disposable coffee cup. I don't use disposable anything if there's a choice. AND-choice is what it's all about, isn't it? I just think your choice to use Keurig cups is a really bad one. Do you think my choice to protect the environment whenever I can is bad? It sure made you mad when I called you on it. Pleasure is nice but it doesn't have to come at the expense of the earth and it's environmental health. It really isn't ours to pollute but I am always suprised and saddened at the intentional destruction for personal gain. It's so easy NOT to pollute. Why work at it?

So you came into the thread to chastise us? :confused3

Always happy to see people working at improving their process!! Thanks!

Can you buy their coffee in a bag and get a permanent filter? OR- a mellita would be a better choice. A mellita brews single cups-into a regular ceramic coffee cup by just pouring hot water over the coffee in the mellita filter and letting it drip brew. Cheaper, faster, better for the environment and still only one or two cups at a time with no electricity even in use.

That post was a direct response to Coconut36. Chastise? When I see the big displays in the stores-how much space they take up and I know that so many people are buying into this...did you read the Keurig link? They admit their product is environmentally bad. So, if you feel 'chastised', my intention was to cause thought and perhaps a reduction in this highly polluting practice.

Bag coffee and a filter defeats the purpose of the Keurig. I don't see a reason to change my coffee making habits to something you find acceptable.

What's the point of coming on a thread about kcups to tell everyone how bad they are for using them? Does it make you fee better than everyone?

Using the computer to spend time on message boards criticizing people about kcups is a waste of electricity.

Well  for you. I have no idea why you feel the need to come to a thread about something you don't use and then proceed to finger wag and tell us what horrible people we are. Don't like it, don't use them. I personally feel there are greater issues at hand than K cups so I am not losing sleep over it.

Did you read the link? They state the cups are non recyclable but speak about other ways they work to reduce their impact and that coffee cultivating and growing is a greater impact than the used cups (so buying a filter and bagged coffee doesn't do jack to alleviate that environmental impact..I would think someone so focused on the environment that they feel the need to lecture would be aware of this and would of course not think to suggest coffee or tea in general as that is a bigger environmental issue than used cups).

You are making me laugh in your :snooty: attitude over it. Do you stand at the end of check out lines chastising others for their purchases if they are not appropriately environmentally friendly? Dig through your friends and neighbors garbage to be sure they are recycling as appropriate? Maybe you enjoy lurking around the disposable diaper aisle at the store so you can lecture those folks too.

Green Mountain flavors. Breakfast blend is my favorite. I like "their blend" too.
The Gingerbread one over the holidays was really nice.

Be very careful with statements like the one bolded above. Technically, tissues, toilet paper, diapers, feminine products, are all disposable...do you and/or your family use a non-disposable version of these each and every time they're needed?

To each his own.

For DH it's Newman's Own Bold. I don't drink coffee, so for me it's English breakfast and mint teas. The cider is ok and something I'll have once in awhile.

I found some boxes at TJ Maxx, $9 for 18 cups. I bought the french toast ones because I hear about them so much. On the smallest water setting, I actually like them a lot.

I love my Keurig! My favorite these days is the Dunks k cups. I do also love the Gloria Jeans favors because they are strong and you can make a big cup. Mudslide is one of their best.

I guess I need a bumper sticker ."Will pollute for good coffee!"

I use half caf a lot and like it.
Breakfast Blend is another I like alot.
I don't like some of the 'bold' roasts so well.

The Iced Tea is also good (but kind of a hassle to make).
