I am just trying to save you work and others from misunderstanding...
It doesn't matter if you change the format of the design so that the background is clear...
If you print to a light transfer - all white (or anything lacking color) will be clear.
If you print to a dark transfer - all white (or anything lacking color - even a transparent background) WILL be white. Since the paper itself is white, the only thing that will not be white will be what has been 'inked' by the printer.
