My heart goes out to Ukraine and her people.

I’m happy to see this thread at last. I was going to create one but was pulled away from the computer. It’s heartbreaking to see what is happening there (and in Russia itself to demonstrators) knowing that there is unfortunately very little we can do at this point OTHER than hope and pray for Ukraine. (Giving money or even arms at this point is pretty pointless since they can’t get to the Ukrainian military in the middle of the fight!)

My husband points out that Putin will never be able to control a population that doesn’t want to be governed by Russia, but I fear that he could be wrong. If Putin manages to kill the current Ukrainian President and install someone of his own choosing, it will at the very least make things extremely volatile for everyone there. I’ll continue to pray that Kyiv can hold out until some sort of cease-fire and talks are called. They are certainly putting up a great and courageous fight.

If President Zelensky is killed or harmed he will become a martyr. He is honouring his people and standing up bravely. Killing Zelensky will rally people like we haven’t seen. I fear for the future.

I’ve been to Ukraine. Fiercely, loyal friends who will stay up until dawn talking your ear off. Thinking about and praying for all Ukrainians. I’d love to say more but this isn't the place.

My son’s best friend is Ukrainian. He’s former military and still has family there. It is a really hard time for him, and he wishes he was there fighting with his friends and family.

Honestly, from his point of view, he's in a win-win position: If he is killed, it's as you say: he becomes a martyr and strengthens his people's resolve. If he wins, his country wins. That's a cold viewpoint, but true.

Thoughts and prayers for them. The courage most have displayed to actually protect all citizens of their land without wavering is to be commended. I pray for their strength and most of all the will to never give up.

Women of all ages are also taking up arms. Lots of bravery on display for the world to see.

According to an updated regulation that went into effect Friday, Dec. 17, women between 18 and 60 who are “fit for military service” and work in a broad range of professions are required to register with Ukraine’s armed forces. In the event of a major war, this expanded reserve of women can be mobilized as part of the national reserve to serve in a broad range of military specialties.

I heard on the news a quote from a Russian soldier...."We don't know who to shoot, they look just like us". Though certainly not a civil war here, this is an invasion, but, as in our Civil War, it was often brother against brother, only a uniform making a difference.

I wonder what they even know about what’s happening? I just happen to be in Cuba right now and there are 3 Russian language channels on TV. Now, of course I don’t know the language or how representative these channels are of what is available there but not one of them is showing coverage of the current crisis.

Aren’t the Russian tv stations all controlled by the state?

I would assume so but I can’t say for sure. Cuban communications (including TV and the Internet) definitely are so maybe it has something to do with that.
