Keeping meds cool

I've recently been diagnosed with hypopituitarism possibly caused by a microadenoma. I'll need to take growth hormone injections with me when I visit the world in November. Can anyone recommend a good way of keeping these cool when travelling?

Thanks :)

Have you looked into the Frio wallets? They come in different sizes and you soak an inner part in water, put in your meds, and then put it in the outer pouch. The evaporation of the water in the gel keeps the meds reasonably cool. It won't keep them at refrigeration temp (like I thought the first time I tried to take my son's extra insulin on vacay with us), but it will keep them cooler than room temp even on a very hot day.

1) At one time in my life, I had Diabetes II, although no longer.
2) The Frio pouches worked like a champ!
3) And, they keep things cool for a long time.

You can also store them at first aid but then you have to retrieve them when you need them

We have used refrigerator at First Aid station in the past. That worked well.

Thank you so much. This is pretty new to me! Can I take sachets of energy drink powder in too? I have an electrolyte imbalance

Absolutely! You can bring your own water bottles -- ice water is free at CS locations. You can bring your own snacks or even PB sandwiches for lunch.

Enjoy your vacation!

Thank you! I've been a zillion times before but before I 'just' had a disability and maybe one or two health issues - I know I asked about electrolytes a while ago too. Now my whole body is telling me to behave so I need to listen!

my son take growth hormones and I leave them at first aid when we arrive and go back and get it when we need it. When traveling on the plane we use thin icepacks. Michelle

My child has cystic fibrosis and has a couple meds that have to be kept cold. I've found for travel the polarpac icepacks that I get from the mail order pharmacy or that the pharmacy uses, keep items cold for a long time. I've left the house early in the morning with a lunch bag cooler and one of those packs and by the time I've gotten to my destination later that night, the pack is still cold and semi frozen.

When I began using my injectable medication I was given a travel case similar to a small soft sided lunch cooler and a couple of Rapid Aid transportation freezer packs. These packs have allowed me to take my meds on long trips safely. I flew from Toronto to Tokyo (14+ hrs) and the packs were still semi-frozen when I arrived. I also use them for long car trips and have had them keep the cooler contents cold even in the Florida heat.

If you don't need to take your meds into the parks with you, then just keep them in the fridge in your room. Having a room fridge would be an absolute requirement when selecting a place to stay. The (non DVC) resort fridges don't have a freezer section, but Luggage services at the resorts do have a freezer for grocery deliveries. I just took my freezer packs to them the day before we left and asked them to put them in their freezer. They bagged and labelled them and I was able to retrieve them just before check out.

I carry a refrigerator/freezer thermometer for hotel fridges. The temps are often off and I was fortunate enough to realize that one time before my insulin froze. Another time the little freezer part was so cold my gel pack ripped when I tried to get it out. I think housekeeping has a compunction to turn the units all the way up.
