Keeping laptop in room at ASMo?

DH is planning on taking his laptop with us on our trip, we'll be staying at ASMo. It isn't actually his, it belongs to his company, it's only his while he works there.

Will it be ok leaving it in the room? Should we lock it in a suitcase? Would it be better to leave it at the front desk, and will they hold it there for us?

Main reason for taking it is so we can upload our pictures at the end of the day, etc. We won't have a car or be going offsite for any reason.

Thanks, Steph

Great question
I will be at the Wl sept 18 thru the 23rd and was wondering the same thing
I will need to bring my laptop for work. I will be attending several conferences but when Im not working I plan to spend all my time in the parks
I was wondering where I should keep it as it wont fit in the in room safe

I brought mine last year and kept it in the drawer of the bedside table.

Out of sight, out of mind.

The safe is not big enought to kee your laptop.

We stayed at Mu.

When I travel with my laptop, I usually just lock it in my suitcase. I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving it in a drawer in the dresser, but that's just me.

There is a cable lock you can get for your laptop. You loop it around something like a bed rail and then attach to laptop. Computer won't go anywhere.

If it is a work computer I would invest in the lock. Cost around $20, not having to replace all the information on your laptop PRICELESS.

Perhaps I'm naive but I leave the laptop on the desk in any hotel I'm at. If it gets stolen, it is a good excuse not to work.

We've been here since the 1st and have left our laptop out on the table everyday and it hasn't been messed with. I travel all the time with me laptop to lots of different places and have always felt comfortable leaving my laptop in my room.

If your laptop is stolen insurance companies want to know what you did to prevent the theft.

If you say you left it on the desk they can deny the claim.

If the laptop is used for business can you afford to be without the laptop or data???

A little prevention can prevent a lot of aggravation.

I travel for business and I have seen all sorts of equipment stolen that wasn't locked down.

If you are using it to upload pics you may want to look at getting a larger memory card for the camera to save lugging the laptop with you and taking any unecessary chances.

That's exactly the reason we're thinking of taking it, and why we really don't want to have to. We had a 256MB card for our camera, and today I saw one on sale online for only $42, so DH bought one on his way home from work. I doubt we'll be taking the laptop now. It would be different if it were ours, but since it belongs to his company and is not insured, we don't want to take a chance with it.

Would 2 256 MB card be enough? I use a 4mp camera.

bigbabyblues - Just got back from 8 days, 7 nights at Disney. We have a 4 MP digital camera and brought 2 256MB cards with us. I only used one, took about 172 pics and one 30 second video clip. Still had room for another 70 pics.

I guess it depends on your style of picture taking. Most of my pictures are of my kids getting autographs or posing with the characters. I did take a few of our room, gifts we had in the room and our fabulous view from the room.

Make sure you have plenty of batteries or re-chargables and a charger. I have 2 sets of re-chargables. Actually I never had to change to the second set of batteries in all that time.

I had my 4 MP camera with a 256 MB card with me in July and filled it most days so it depends on how many pictures you want/plan to take. We took over 2600 pictures in July and over 1500 during our 7 days there last October. I uploaded them to my laptop each night.

In 5 1/2 years of taking my laptop with me on vacation I have always left it in it's case, but on a table or where I was able to use it. I have never had an incident where it was missing when I came back. If you are uncomfortable with leaving it out you can always lock it inside of a suitcase.

Like DisneyLisa, there is no way I could fit all our pictures on 512M. I take tons of pics, so I can cull and edit at leisure, so I have to have the laptop. Our plan is to lock it in the suitcase, although I'm so protective of it, I may cable lock the suitcase down too!:teeth:

It is just a thought, but all of hubby's laptops (provided through work) have come with a removable hard drive. You could pull out the hard drive, lock that in the in-room safe, then try to secure the laptop out of sight in the room. If the worst happens and the computer is stolen, you will still have your data.

Hubby typically buys a second hard drive he can use for personal material, or if he is going to a security conference. That way his data is protected at home/work during the trip.

I would not leave the laptop sitting out! Not that I distrust Mousekeeping, but I often come back to my room and find the curtain have been opened and passerbys can see right into my room. This is for the resorts that have the external hallways.

I hope you don't mind me tagging this on but i didn't get any answer to my post. I will be locking up my laptop when it's in my room but what i need to know is will they lock them up in there safe as i will be transfering hotels a few times this trip?

I'd lock up a laptop with a cable lock. We have a Kensington lock, and it's easy to use, and does a great job. These locks are pretty well priced, IMO, especially considering the losses you'd have should the laptop be stolen. The lock is a great investment if you're bringing a laptop anywhere, not just to WDW. I'd say it's better than locking it in a suitcase, as many suitcase locks seem kind of flimsy, and some look like they can be opened with a bobby pin...

mhelsey, I'm not sure I totally understand your question, but if you're wondering about your laptop's safety when your bags are transferred to another hotel, I'd take it with you. With transferring bags from place to place, it'll probably go through many hands, and not everyone can be trusted.

Just stayed at both ASMo and WL (and Motel 6 on the way there), and left laptop locked in hardshell case by bed when out of room every time except at Motel 6. Never had a problem, never worried about it at WDW. My thinking is that room accessibility by persons other than management, maintenance, or housekeeping is very improbable on WDW property, and a laptop is pretty tough to sneak out (and pawn), as opposed to jewelry or cash. I would even bet there are some security cameras (in hallways, elevators, etc.) the location of which even housekeeping and maintenance do not know, so I bet percentage-wise sticky-fingered workers are probably a rarity at the WDW resorts, especially as compared to off-freeway hotels/motels. And cash/jewelry is the thief's target of least risk.

Your mileage may vary. I'd say just don't leave cash, gold, or valuable jewelry out, anywhere ;)

We take a 256 a 128 and 2 32's for our 4 meg Canaon G2 and we have never had a problem we just delete the pics we don't want or that don't look very good.
