We will be at HH next week and I am considering kayaking for the first time.

Has anyone done it? How strenuous is it? Do you ever tip over and get wet!

Thanks
Linda

I haven't been kayaking at HH. However, I do go kayaking every once and a while. In general, I find kayaks to be much more stable than canoes. This is partly due to the fact that you sit much lower and this reduces the center of gravity.

It is possible for kayaks to tip over. However, I've never had it happen to me, but I mainly kayak in relatively calm water. So, I think it all depends upon the conditions where you are kayaking.
Also, depending upon the kayak and the conditions it is possible to get wet. It's not unusual to get a little water in the kayak from your feet when getting in if you're launching from the beach. Also, water can splash in from waves and some can come from the paddle.

My family really enjoys kayaking and we're hoping to go to HH next year and definitely plan on doing it.

If the weather is reasonable, I'd say give it a try. It can be very relaxing and doesn't have to be strenuous at all unless you go somewhere that you have to fight the currents.

Thanks for the info. The reason i am concerned about the water is that I have an insulin pump and don't want it submerged!

The kayaking program is done with close supervision. Just let the instructor know about your concerns and they'll watch out for you.

Enjoy the kayaking, it is a fun adventure. No one tipped in our group last trip...and we had some very inexperienced folks along.

Have fun!

DH and I went kayaking for the first time this May at HH. We decided to take a "double" kayak rather than a single each as I was concerned I wouldn't be able to handle it. The double worked very well, but I do believe next time I'll opt for a single. If the winds are strong, it will be more challenging, but great fun. No one in our group tipped over, and the guide actually said it's almost impossible to tip. Most of the folks in our group had not been kayaking before. I would explain your concerns to the guide as Doc suggested so he's aware and can keep a closer watch. Hope you have a great trip.

I went kayaking at HH for the first time this May. The kayaks they use are very stable touring ones. Most tours leave from a small beachfront at the Resort. However, my tour left from the dock area of Shelter Cove. We had to enter and exit the kayaks from the dock. The guide helped all of us and nobody tipped or fell into the water.

Getting the hang of paddling was a bit of work for me. I got in eventually but got very wet in the process. Plus, the two other people with my group knew what to do and ended up way ahead of me. In order to catch up I had to paddle strongly, like a canoe, to catch up. With a different group you may not have the same problem. I'd also suggest a single kayak the first time out.

My shoulders were a little tired and my wrists were sore after this. However, I'd go again next time. The sights were beautiful.

I was considering getting a double kayak since I will have my 13 yr old son with me.
Is this a bad idea?
Several have suggested a single.
