Kayaking?? And Olympic Sport?

Have you ever Kayaked? It's a sport to me.

don't get me started....

have you seen the team handball....where the heck did they come up with this "sport"? Can you actually make a living playing team handball?

and quit showing extreme closeups of the swimmers meticulously adjusting their goggles....you'd think they're performing brain surgery.....and do the swimmers even have bones in their bodies?....it freaks me out watching them doing all their freaky warm up gestures

I understand "beach volleyball" has it's origins on the "beach". Well, now they're playing in a stadium with a sand floor...they're not on the beach...so why the need to play in bikini's?....the only way to get men to watch I'm guessing.

and why do gymnasts uniforms continue to get smaller and smaller....and cut higher and higher on the leg....so that almost all their rears hangs out...? same as beach volleyball....to attract a wider audience.

I'd consider kayaking more of a sport than ping pong...:confused3

At least they aren't doing the body close-ups of the sand volleball players from bottom to top anymore. I was beginning to think the Olympics should be rated R.

What constitutes a sport, in your minds, exactly?

WOW, you must be reading MY MIND I was thinking the SAME EXACT THING...however, I was "afraid" to post about it here, thanks for being MY HERO!:worship: Next thing you know, they will be playing in G-strings!!!!:headache:

I griped about the same exact thing to DH last night!!!!

Yea, I think kayaking is potentially as physically demanding as cycling. Just like cycling, anyone can do it casually (by slowly rowing around a lake) But racing and competing adds an extreme level of althleticism to it. I couldn't do it.

Here is a list of the current Olympic summer sports:
Archery
Athletics (all track and field sports)
Badminton
Baseball (this is the last year it will be included in the games)
Basketball
Beach Volleyball
Boxing
Canoe/Kayak Flatwater
Canoe/Kayak Slalom
Cycling BMX
Cycling Mountain Bike
Cycling Road
Cycling Track
Diving
Equestrian
Fencing
Football (Soccer)
Gymnastics Artistic
Gymnastics Rhythmic
Trampoline
Handball
Hockey
Judo
Modern Pentathlon (this is a bizarre combo of sports!)
Rowing
Sailing
Shooting
Softball (being discontinued after this year like Baseball)
Swimming
Synchronized Swimming
Table Tennis
Taekwondo
Tennis
Triathlon
Volleyball
Water Polo
Weightlifting
Wrestling

IMO, Kayaking seems to fit just fine. The equestrian community is currently working to get Reining added as a recognized sport.

It seems reasonable to me. I don't understand your disdain for this as an Olympic sport. What's the reason?

Oh man, that is my pet peeve too.
The guys in beach volleyball wear baggie shorts and tank tops or Tshirts the women? as little as they can get away with.

Same with gymnastics. The men are in shorts not thongs ( ok I am exaggerating but you know what I mean!)

I think Kayaking is a sport, and would agree its a lot more of a sport than Ping Pong. Soon Wii Sports will be an Olympic sport!

Tell you what though...it's so friggin hot in Beijing that I'd be wearing as little as possible too while playing ANY sport!

I saw a "sport" the other day that appeared to be horses "dancing" around....they weren't jumping over obstacles or anything, just moving around the area set up for them.

At that point, nothing that is considered an olympic sport would surprise me.

I've bolded the ones I think don't belong

And... I used to teach synchonized swimming :rotfl:

Uh oh...now you've upset me. What you were watching was dressage. One of the finest equestrian sports there is. It is mind-blowingly difficult. Though what you were seeing was the dressage portion of the 3-Day eventing competition (which includes cross-country and stadium jumping) and differs a bit from the Team and Individual dressage competition.

The training and skill needed to do what those horses and riders were doing is mind boggling.

Wooops...I fell off my soapbox! ;)
