Kauai Areas/Hotels

Looking at going to Kauai ifor 3 days before going to Oahu first week in September. We always go to Oahu and wanted to venture there to see Waimea Canyon and do a little hiking and snorekeling. I don't need a luxury resort but don't want a roach motel either. I was looking at the Lihue and Poipu Beach area as it seems more central to everything and Princeville looks to secluded for us.
