That is incorrect installation of a roof and voids the warranty.

Well the insurance woman I spoke to today didn't make it seem like it was..In fact she said we were lucky up here that we are allowed to do it, because they were not allowed to in FL. I do know of others who have done it because I have seen it done all around here....I will find out soon enough.

No it doesn't. In NJ you can have two layers of shingles, before you need to remove all. When we installed our new roof 10ish years ago, it was installed over the existing one. All legal like. Not we have to remove both layers to put down a new one.

it is called a "roof-over" and it is perfectly legit :confused3 I myself never had one done, but there are (or at least were) many legit company's that do it here in FL. It depends on the shape of the shingles that you are covering.

I said WARRANTY. Just because the state allows it does not make it the correct thing to do.

5.) Shorter roof life expectancy

Most responsible roofing contractors agree that a lay-over roof will decrease the new roof's lifetime by about 25%.

Contractor Errors Which Void Manufacturer Warranty:

Installation of new shingles over existing warn shingles.
This compromises the integrity of your new roof and voids all manufacturers' warranty.

Can you just remove the top layer and replace it? You'd still end up with the legal two layers. Probably not a good idea (we can't do two layers here, so I'm not really familiar), but is is legal?

I imagine that the PP is rather glad it is legal for them to have two layers!

they use to be able to do it here, but I guess it has changed. I can see it changing with all the codes that constantly change here. I know several people that have had it done, legally, but to be honest, in the last year, I have not heard of anyone doing it. My mother had it done in 2005, that I know, and the people up the street from me had it done in like 2000. When I had my roof done, they were still legal too (paperwork for my roof was done in 2004 but actual work took place in 2005). I did not have a roof over though. Contractor told me my roof was in too bad of shape for one.

where are you and why are you asking? can you help? you must not be without power.....

In NJ, with a generator. So many are still with no power and basic supplies. We spent the afternoon donating baby supplies, blankets to the Salvation Army.

We did have a crew here from MO. for a few hours Friday but they haven't returned.

We have a full house because my Aunt lost her home in Breezy Point, NY but thankfully they are alive.

Thank goodness for the generators. Unbelieveable what happened at Breezy Point, so many homes lost, thankfully they have you to stay with. I hope all those families have someone to take them in.
