I witnessed something today that warmed my heart. I came up behind 3 school buses which were stopped, discharging students. There were two lanes of traffic each way and a turning lane in the middle, so everyone was stopped. Well, all the law abiding ones were. As we sat there, a car pulled out from behind the lead car facing me, veered into the turning lane, and hit the gas--home free!--with at least 30 kids still getting off the buses. And then *another* car pulled out and did the same thing. I was thinking WTH?? when I realized that car #2 was one of Georgia's Finest in one of those souped up drug-dealer cars. And there he went, pedal to the metal, lights blazing. Oh, yeah~~CARma, baby!

In NC, if you have two traffic lanes in each direction and a turning lane in the middle, only the lanes on the school bus side have to stop, not the two on the other side. Of course, no one follows this because it's a relatively new law, so you have some people stopping and others (who are actually the law-abiding ones) going on if their lane is open.

It's really confusing but I follow the (new) law and if someone hasn't stopped dead in front of me I go on. Sometimes I get someone catching up with me ahead at a stoplight and I get some dirty looks, but they are the ones who are in the wrong.

Love it! Carma is good
Its like when the idiot in the 4wd goes flying past me on the highway when its snowy/icy and I get to the bottom of the hill and lo and behold, there they are tires up in the ditch! I love Carma!

At least once a week someone will go right past the stop arm when DD is either getting on or off the bus. Once the UPS man yelled and swore at the bus driver to close the stop arm because DD is in a wheelchair and can't "run" into the street. As soon as I got back inside the house, I made a call to UPS.

In CA if a school bus is stopped, with red lights flashing ALL traffic must stop. Both sides of road, all lanes.

:cutie:

In Ohio, if you have a four lane with a turn lane in the middle, the opposite traffic is not required to stop because the kids are forbidden to cross at this type of stop. When I was driving a bus, I never minded that the cars stopped because kids do dumb things in spite of what instructions they have.

If there are multiple lanes in each direction, only the side that the bus is stopped on has to stop. It is against the law for the driver to allow children to cross to the other side on a multi-lane(more than one in each direction) road.

Yes, I am sure the law is different from state to state, but in NC only the side the bus is on has to stop. No child would be dropped off on a busy street like that and asked to cross four lanes of traffic.

Tires up? You really like that a car has flipped over?

The rule is for an undivided road. If the road has a median, then the opposite side does not have to stop. If the road is four lanes of traffic with no median then ALL traffic has to stop.

When I was in 7th grade a boy in my class was stuck by a car who felt the need to go around a stopped school bus. It was an undivided road (Bulter Ave on Tybee Island -- the main drag). I still have the newspaper articles I clipped while he was in the hospital. He suffered massive brain damage and was never the same after the after the accident. We all expected him to come back to school and require some kind of assistance, but instead he and his mother moved away so he could attend a special school. His step-brother stayed in my classes throughout high school and would always keep us, who knew Armin, posted with updates.

From that personal experience, I always stop...even in doubt, I stop.

Yes it pays to know what kind of vehicles your city is sporting for the unmarked cars. I know of at least 2 different models being used here:thumbsup2

In my state if there are double yellow lanes, then you don't have to stop when you are traveling in the opposite direction. Lots of people seemed to be confused by that and stop anyway. It doesn't bother me at all. I'd rather stop behind them and make sure all the kiddos are safe. What would be illegal here is using that turning lane as a passing lane. . .really stupid and I'm glad the police were there to get this inconsiderate driver! :cool1:

I keep wishing the cops would show up in my neighborhood like that.:sad2: The main road into my development is three lanes, the middle one is a turn lane. Because that road is through an apartment complex all of the kids have to come out to the main road to catch the bus.

One particular stop, which is at the entrance to one parking lot is about 100 feet from another stop which is at a side street. The parking lot parents, whose kids get picked up a few minutes before the side street kids, will drive out of the parking lot, down the turn lane then turn into the side street right in front of the other bus with it's red lights on.

It's like when all the idiot American tourists come here and drive on the right side of the road... oh... wait...:stir:

I didnt know they made drug-dealer cars?
