Karl Marx had an idea

I think Reagan said it best:

"How do you tell a Communist?
Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin.
And how do you tell an anti-Communist?
It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin."

Karl Marx had wonderful, idealist ideas.....we can marvel at the idea of communism- everyone gets equal, everyone is valued, garbage men are as important as, well, NFL football players....

Karl Marx was not the problem. The problem is that humans are selfish money-grabbing, want-to-win-and-be-#1 kinda animals. And, I include myself in that description. Being nice, sharing equally (especially when WE worked harder then THEM) is not in our makeup. We want to win- and NOT share it with the other guy.

Karl Marx's mistake was that he was rich, educated and idealistic and he thought he knew the pains of the working class (gee...sounds like "insert your politician here"!). He wrote a theory, not a plan. What Russia (well, the old USSR), Cuba, etc. had and have was/is NOT communism- they just convinced everyone else it was. Communism is wonderful, blissful, perfect- and it doesn't work!

What Karl Marx DID do was help change the world in a small, but crucial, way. He stated that men were NOT better because they were rich bourgeoisie....but that the working class proletariate were just as good. That is an important concept that has dominated even American culture: The little guy can become a great and powerful businessman or whatever s/he choses to be.

Read the Communit Manifesto, it is interesting reading and not what most people expect. It sounds wonderful.....something that most of us would love to see....but it doesn't work (often the problem with idealism!).....Don't blame Marx for the bad implementation of his theory. He was, actually, quite the humanist. Even IF he was wrong!

From each according to his ability to each according to his need. Great idea but not really workable considering human nature. :confused3

Exactly. The former USSR, Cuba, and China (until, PERHAPS, very recently) are totalitarian systems, not communist per Marx. Marx was an idealist, although he wasn't particularly rich. He lived off his rich friend, Engels, who willingly supported him. Engels was rich. Both wanted to see workers (whose conditions in 19th century Europe were deplorable, almost beyond our imagination in many cases) more valued and with greater political clout.

So, to call someone a Marxist could, in light of this last statement, be a compliment.

But the slur of "communism" certainly has a grand tradition from Repubs in this country.

the problem is Marxism has really never been tried. I am not advocating trying it, but to claim that Russia or Cuba or China has tried Marxism is not true, what they have all had is a totalitarian state that they called communist.

If you read that over and over and over, you'll start to "get" what all the folks who don't like communism are saying. The idea that communism is a good thing per se is false. It isn't. It is evil at its core. All they are doing is selling you a pile of horse **** so that they can be in charge of everyone and all the money.

Anyone who believe that in its essence, communism/socialism is a good thing is either a moron or planning to reap the benefits.

Communism is always wildly popular with the people - most of them, anyway - until they have to live with the results.

But, like it or not, we're going that way. I decided to make peace with it. No matter how important it is to get through it, if you bang your head against a brick wall enough times and you'll say, "Damn, that hurts" and give the hell up.

The people of America want communism and they'll get it. But when they have it, they won't like it. Bet your life on that.

Russia proved it doesn't work.

But he didn't have the audacity of hope. BO wants his shot at making it work.

Free will means nothing to BO. You've got more than your share. Give it to the government.

Obama's 'audacity of hope' :thumbsup2 appeals to me much more than McCain's 'mendacity of nope'

Barack Obama has wonderful, beautiful, idealist ideas. Guess what? He's wrong, too.
