Help!

Surely there are some karate experts or karate moms here on the DIS.

We had ordered my son a Century brand uniform, but it seemed to have a slightly pink tint to the white fabric.. :confused3

Now I am looking at uniforms, and I would really love some insight into which brands are best. Does anybody here have a favorite in a reasonably priced uniform?

I ran across a Ronin brand uniform and the description sounds good... cost a bit more than Century or Proforce... but I am thinking it might be worth it.

Any input is appreciated!

Does his karate school recommend any? DD has one that I just got through her instructor. It says ProForce on the label - not sure if that's the brand or something extra she added on. I'm a clueless karate mom as you can see. :lmao:

I have gotten a few different brands in the last 5 years. I haven't seen much difference in quality so I would go by price and fit. Century has worked well for us but I have always gotten the black gi's. What belt is your child?

Pro Force is not bad, although the tops tend to shrink more than I would like.

My favorite is Kamikaze:

Specifically the Budokan line and the Kodomo style. They uniforms start at around $27 and go from 000 to 8 (about the biggest range in sizes any normal person would need!)

We use HSU. They are good quality and not too expensive. I think with any karate gi you buy you are going to have shrinkage going on, so just be careful when you sew them up not to make them too short.

Or you can hit Ebay and search for karate uniforms. I got one there and it's held up pretty well. Not faded or anything (it's black).

Thanks everyone! :thumbsup2

The Kamakazi uniforms are now sold under a new brand name, with one of the possible reasons being any negative connotation to the word Kamakazi. (same uniforms....)

I just got a reply from one online supplier who carries most brands. He seems to recommend the Ronin over the Century and Proforce.... I think I am going to go with a Ronin 110 cotton ( I think it is a light-midweight ) Cost just a bit more, about $27.00 plus shipping. I want a nice one, so I think it might be worth it.

I don't know what brand my DS karate gi is but I wanted to second black if it is allowed. We have very hard water and anything white doesn't stay that way for long. He has had a black gi and it has held up very nicely for 2 years.

I can't help with brands, since DS buys his own uniforms now for TKD. But about the shrinkage...we never had that problem with his uniforms except the one time DH decided the instructions were wrong and put a uniform in the dryer. The instructors always told us they should never be put in the dryer. They also told us to wash the uniforms separately as the fabric tends to pick up colors from other clothes. :confused3 I don't know how true that is because DS always insisted we follow the instructions as one boy had his uniform turn quite pink & he didn't want that to happen! (This was when he was 11.) :lmao:

Oh - and if anyone has trouble getting the odor out in cold water wash, we found that adding 20 Mule Team® Borax to the wash really helps. :thumbsup2
