Kapalua Bay Questions

I just read a post from a HI visitor at Mauna Lani who said it wasn't kid-friendly. I'm planning a next summer stay at Kapalua Bay, using DVC points. For anyone who has stayed there, is it welcoming to families with children? Also, how far in advance should I be making my request? Based on another trip report on this board, I also plan a couple night's stay at the Grand Wailea. When I went to the internet to check availability for next June, they said there wasn't any availability for the category of room I asked for. That seems hard to believe, a full year in advance. Thanks for any help.
