Kansas votes to keep its children ignorant...

accepted theory??? A theory is STILL just a theory.

Did you read Kimberly's post? Or any of this thread? And it is a scientific theory and I think many people have explained the difference.

Sorry, but I jumped into this thread late, didn't read the whole thing and I know what the difference is.

It seems that a lot of the creation "science" I have encountered is taking X data and working backwards from it. You should see how the young Earth creationists explain why we can see the light from stars tens of thousands of lightyears away when they believe the planet is only supposed to be about 10,000 years old at most.

Well, that would be a shock to all the organisms living in 9,000 BCE, wouldn't it! :rotfl:

Yes, evolution at certain levels is pretty much fact but the problem is getting from a one cell amoeba to YOU! :teeth: That's the hard part.

To be fair, no one said it was easy--just not necessarily supernatural. Plenty of hard things happen naturally over time. ;)

Knowing both the theory of evolution and creationism will not make our children ignorant (or behind the curve).

And no, I'm not trying to eradicate science.

Personally, I think believing evolution as the origin of man and all existing animals requires a LOT more faith than even creationism does.

What I don't get is why the religious right try to defend a SIGNLE INTERPRETATION of the Bible over and above trying to reconcile the two.

What is even more amazing is that they insist on stopping their reading of the Genesis account at Genesis 2:4 -- there are two very different stories of Creation told in the Book of Genesis. The first account describes Creation in seven days and has man and woman created at the same moment in the image of God. The man and woman are not named. The second account does not give any timeline for Creation and has man created first and then woman created from man -- they are named Adam and Eve only in the second account. These two biblical accounts of Creation are incredibly different in their interpretation of the same event and each has their own focus. The authors of the first account were more concerned with the concept of creating order out of chaos and God's dominion while the second account is much more concerned with the place of humanity within Creation.

As for teaching a literal approach to Judeo-Christian doctrine such as ID in a classroom -- and we're only kidding ourselves if we try to suggest that ID is anything less than the Genesis account of Creation -- I wouldn't want a teacher to be instructing my child in our Christian beliefs. If we want our children to be instructed in the Christian faith then that is the responsibility of the family and the Church -- not the state funded education system.

As for tax support for Churches - it's what keeps many churches alive and well. In Canada Churches do not pay property taxes to local municipalities and charitable gifts to the Church are certainly encouraged with the tax credits received by the donor. It might not be that we are directly receiving a government cheque, but such tax avoidance is essentially tax support. There are no two ways about it.

:rolleyes2 People who vote for this kind of thing, shouldn't be worried so much about being descended from apes, they should worry about being overtaken by them.
