Hello everyone. We are going to Kansas City in April for a baseball game at Kauffman Stadium and I am looking for a hotel and also for other things to do there. We have 2 boys - DS15 and DS12. We will have Saturday morning and early afternoon to do "something else".

I've gone online all over looking for hotels. It seems that many major chain hotels are run down in that area and the reviews have been bad - though they were a year + ago. Hoping they've gotten better. We usually try for HIExpress or something similar. Thinking under $100/night, if possible. Would like an indoor pool and breakfast included. We are driving in from the north.

What area is best to stay in when going to a game - but also close to some other things to do and see? Restaurants and shopping close-by would be great. Any Disney outlets in the area? How about Ikea or The Container Store??

TIA for any information!

there is a Worlds of Fun. The is Crown Center a huge shopping place. There a few casinos. There is a zoo

There isn't an Ikea and there aren't any Disney outlets. There is only one Disney store in the area and that is in Overland Park on the Kansas side.

Since you have a car, I would say on the Plaza. You can easily Priceline a hotel in the 3 1/2 - 4 star category for $100 or less (depending on the weekend, under $50). Another option is Crown Center but, unless a festival or something is going on that weekend (or you're over 21), there is not much to do around there, especially on the weekend.

The Plaza is great because you can walk around, shop and, if you feel like it, the art museums are very close.

(I live in KC, BTW)

Thanks for the information. The Plaza is downtown, right? We are going to a Red Sox game so I am finding all of the hotels in the stadium area already booked. I've never used Priceline. I've read that Priceline is usually more for parties of 2 - that they insure a bed for 2 with those ressies. Hoping that it won't be difficult to insure sleeping for 4.

Thanks also to the posters who replied about shopping and things to do!

It's about 10 minutes from downtown, 15 minutes from the stadiums.

I know Priceline doesn't guarantee a 2 bed room but I have always requested and gotten one...of course, YMMV.

Without Pricelining (Expedia), on that Saturday, the Sheraton Suites on the Plaza is $129, Embassy Suites is $111, Holiday Inn is $70.

I suspect you can get the Sheraton or Embassy Suites for under $75 on Priceline.

There are several hotels at Crown Center that are very nice. Crown Center has a lot of shopping and some really neat stores. One that is popular with families with kids is Kaleidoscope. The Country Club Plaza is another great shopping district with lots of restaurants.

As far as things to do, Worlds of Fun's opening weekend is April 17. We have lots of roller coasters as well as many rides for little ones. If you do come- stop by Viking Voyager and say hi! (I'm the lead there.) Other fun places for the families includes Coco Key which is an indoor water park.

If you are into museums, we have the US's only World War I memorial, the Liberty Memorial. The base has a beautiful museum. It is absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it. When you're done you can take the elevator to the top of the tower which will give you a beautiful view of the entire city.
Another great museum is the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. In Independence (not too far away) they have the Truman Library and home.

I will say that our absolute favorite hotel to stay in is the Drury Inn by the ball fields. It is a great hotel. It is very nice and clean and the staff is friendly. They have free drinks and snacks for all guests every night (including alcoholic drinks for guests of age) and their breakfast is great- again, free of charge. There are several in the area. I have yet to stay in a Drury that wasn't wonderful. The Drury is one that is normally very affordable.
