just wondering how many people remember

Still around, but Northwest, used to be called Northwest Orient Airlines, that was the first airplane I went on. I can still remember the song from the commercials "Northwest Orient....Air.....lines....". Not sure when the "orient" part was dropped.

Northwest was swallowed up by Delta.

My dad flew alot for the space program in the 1970's.

They flew Eastern a lot.

We have a lot of laughs over it.

He remembers the time of literally chain smoking and drinking martinis all the way back from Houston to Philly.

And the flight attendants were call stewardesses and they wore some pretty short skirts.......:scared1:

Although we always flew Delta as a kid...I remember that Hughes Air was in the same terminal at LAX. They had bright yellow (and I mean YELLOW) airplanes that people called flying bananas.

Remember PSA that had smiley faces painted on the front of all of their planes?

AirCal

Texas International (with the big Star on the tail)

Even though it was part of Delta...I miss Song's video screens at the MCO boarding area. They had a thing running to tell people to wait until called to board that was like an old "B" movie and they titled it "Invasion of the Gate People!"

I wrote a paper on careers in 1970, and one career I researched was stewardess. Back then they had to be single, under 30, attractive, couldn't wear glasses, and a certain height and weight. Things have certainly changed, as there are plenty of frumpy old flight attendants these days! :lmao:

Haha, I remember People's Express! My best GF and I flew them and brought our own wine..which was confiscated pretty quickly! But for two 22 yr olds on spring break, the price was right.
I also remember Eastern. We flew from EWR to Ft Lauderdale many times as a kid and seem to think we flew them mostly.

Southern Airlines: Best commercial ever - Man gets on plane and it's like Bacchus' ultimate party, when he looks at his ticket he goes through a curtain and it's the ultimate cold-war era cargo plane and the announcer states that Southern doesn't treat you like a "second-class" citizen. Like Jet Blue and SW Southern only had one class of service.

I remember that commercial!! "Nobody's second class on Southern."

I especially love the guy turning the record player with his finger...

I flew to Japan on Northwest Orient in 1980. I still have a metal spoon from that trip!

I hate to admit I'm old enough to remember all those airlines and even flew on many of them.
And when you could smoke anywhere on airplanes, then they created designated smoking sections and would ask when booking "smoking or non smoking", and the ashtrays in the seat armrests. And you actually got a hot meal even in coach. A buck or two for a cocktail.
You use to get dressed up to fly, you would never think of wearing jeans or shorts and tee shirts. And you weren't squeezed in like sardines.
I can even remember when piston driven prop planes were still in commercial service, and I'm talking in the 60s.

I'm not saying it was better or worst but it sure was different.

I remember flying Air Florida, somewhat of a discount airline on the east coast.:cool1:

I forgot one: New York Air "The flying nosh" "The big apple airline"

They gave you a red bag with a bagel and cream cheese for breakfast.

Continental - I HATED THAT AIRLINE. They took me to Vietnam in 1969. I never forgave them!

Not too long ago, but I remember Piedmont Airlines before USAir swallowed them up. Used to fly them from Boston to Dayton OH in the '80s, and they always gave you the full can of soda! Life's little joys... :)

My uncle was one of the original pilots for Eastern airlines. He knew Amelia Earhart and Eddie Rickenbacker(sp). I have his Eastern airlines wings.
Peoples airlines $29.00 from EWR to Boston. They collected the airfare after you boarded the plane!!!

My first international flight was Boston to Brussels on Sabena, the national airline of Belgium which has been absorbed and renamed a couple of times. Did anyone actually fly on the short-lived Hooters Air?

I can remember the first time I had to go through a metal detector and put my bags through the machines. Before that, we just walked on.
