People's Express? Mohawk? Eastern? any other oldie airlines?

We used to fly Eastern from Miami when I was a wee little kid. :) And Pan-Am - we flew that trans-Pacific a few times when I was young.

We flew People's Express lots of times. EWR-MCO, EWR-Buf.
It was cool that you could pay for your ticket on the airplane...
The flight attendants came around with an old credit card tray and
swiped your card.

My mother worked for Mohawk Air in Utica, NY. My brother and I got to visit the small airport and watch the planes often. I still have a pin that the captains used to wear.

My fondest memories are of Republic Airlines. They used to fly into Hibbing, MN. Every time my mom would take us up into the Arrowhead of MN to visit my grandparents, we went past the airport. My sister and I would always get excited hoping the "Blue Goose" was sitting on the runway........ My very first flight was on Republic... my dad lived in Japan and was going to fly me, my sister, and my grandma to Okinawa to visit him, so one summer he took us on a flight from Hibbing, MN to MSP to get us used to flying..... I have loved flying ever since!

Not so old, but still missed: Midway.

I definitely remember Eastern. They started flying again a few years after they went under, with $6 flights from Boston-New York and New York-Washington one weekend. No advance purchase available. I got to Logan at 6 AM, and boarded a flight at 1 PM!!! Spent about two hours in New York, made it back to JFK, and got on the last flight back to Boston.

Braniff is another one that started up again, and (naturally) I was compelled to take advantage of their low introductory fare. No, I never do learn. Flight was delayed several hours, supposed to connect in New York, they promised the connecting flights would wait. Nope. Those of us heading for Tampa (Orlando? It's been a while) were placed on a Continental flight - best leg of the trip! After we were bused to Newark, of course. On the return flight, again changing planes in New York, surprise! Flight delays. Weather. Snowing in Boston. Funny, when I called home, they didn't know anything about snow :confused3:. Anyway, the plane didn't have overhead bins, just shelves - so everyone had to gate-check carry-ons. They promised our luggage would get to Boston on our flight.

That was my first experience with misdirected luggage.

One of my favorites was Eastwind (the "Killer Bee"). They used to do low-cost shuttle flights up and down the east coast using old 737's. A bunch of their pilots were ex-Navy, and you could definitely tell from the landings - sometimes it felt like they still thought they were planting it on an aircraft carrier ;)

Flew Midway in 1988. It was my first plane ride.

I also recall that Eastern was the sponsor of the "If You Had Wings" attraction in Tomorrowland. And I remember commercials with Frank....his name will come to me and I'm desperately trying to remember it instead of giving up and googling it...he was an astronaut who was president of the airline when we lived in Homestead. I want to say "Bowman" but I know that's the name of the guy in 2001. Borman. Frank Borman.

TTA - Trans Texas Air affectionately called Tree Top Airlines. If it was 2 hours late, it was on time. We were flying from Waco to Dallas and were told that the plane would be little late (about 4 hours late), a little while later we were told that the plane was going to be late (6 hours late), and finally were told that the plane would be really late (24 hours late).

My very first airplane ride was on Mohawk. It was my honeymoon in 1969.

I was a regular Eastern and Pan-Am flyer when I was a kid. Eastern, Pan-Am, and AA were the big three flying out of SJU, then when EA and PA when under, AA became the 800lb gorilla at SJU.

I also miss TWA.... a lot.

Oh god, I remember People express. I still have nightmares from that airline. It was one of the first discounted airlines I had ever been on. Had a real cheap flight from pittsburgh to newark during the 70's. seats were teeny tiny. ugh! very cheap though which was great since I was a poor college student.

I remember Eastern airlines. Was my first time flying & it was my honeymoon. Flew to WDW (of course). I fell in love with flying and WDW. I guess love was in the air that trip. ;)

I remember thinking that a $99 flight each way from Chicago to Florida (Tampa, in this case) was a low fare! That was in 1982.

National Airlines: "Hi my name's Bambi, fly me to Ft. Lauderdale." Said very provocatively.

Southern Airlines: Best commercial ever - Man gets on plane and it's like Bacchus' ultimate party, when he looks at his ticket he goes through a curtain and it's the ultimate cold-war era cargo plane and the announcer states that Southern doesn't treat you like a "second-class" citizen. Like Jet Blue and SW Southern only had one class of service.

I remember most of these. One of the worst flights I ever had was on Peoples Express to LAX. I changed my return flight so I didn't have to fly back on them! :lmao:

I considered myself lucky to live through it. Eastern was another airline I hated..........

I remember Eastern... both from If You Had Wings at WDW, and because in Atlanta the 2 biggest airlines were Delta and Eastern. I also remember when Eastern went under the C concourse (and part of the B) pretty much became a ghost town overnight.

I never did fly them though. My dad has supposedly had a bad experience with them so our airline of choice became Delta.

Still around, but Northwest, used to be called Northwest Orient Airlines, that was the first airplane I went on. I can still remember the song from the commercials "Northwest Orient....Air.....lines....". Not sure when the "orient" part was dropped.
