I can't remember where I read this post. But I saw that someone said that they were a size 18 and weighed 170lbs. I weigh 221 and I can were a size 18 that fit tightly but they do fit. How does a person that is 50lbs more than the other person wear a size 18 like me? I remember being around 190lbs and wearing a size 13/14.

Does this make sense?
I am just curious:confused:

I have asked this a lot lately myself. People know I have been loosing weight and those that have been loosing as well we compare clothing sizes.

I am currently a size 16 (I do have one pair of size 14's but that was a gift from GOD;) ) Anyway, I think it has to do with Height and weight, plus Body Fat. As we know muscle weighs more than fat. I think designer (name brand) clothes are sized to make you feel better about yourself. They cost enough they should make you feel good!;) Some people like their clothes TIGHT:eek: I am not one of those people. I don't lay on the bed to zip up my jeans!:smooth: I think women's sizing SUCKS anyway. I can try on a dozen size 16's and maybe only buy 1 or 2. I feel you just need a size base and once you try the item on you might need to go up or down by a size.:yo-yo:

It also has to do with bone structure. Even as a teenager, my hips were very wide and I am very broad-shouldered for a woman. Right now I wear a size 20 -sometimes 18- but a freind of mine who is about the same height & weight can get into a 14 because she doesn't have the monster hips that I do.

I think we should start comparing not just weight, but basic measurements like bust, waist, hips. I've had the same questions myself.

I weigh 130 and am still wearing size 12s, and I know there are other people 30 pounds heavier who also are wearing 12s.

I also know people who weigh 130 and are wearing size 8s & 6s.

Maybe I read the post wrong, Samandmom, I thought the person said they weighed 170 and was wearing a size 8, not 18....and that got me thinking too. But as so many have already said there are a lot of factors that determine the size you wear. Also, some people have a different comfort level with clothes, by this I mean some people like to wear their clothes tight and some people like to wear them loose. I am 5'5", I weigh 158 pounds and I wear a size 12 or 14 depending on the manufacturer. I have a friend that weighs the same as me, give or take a pound, but she is 3" taller than I am and she wears a 10. I also carry most of my weight in my hips, where as someone else may carry their weight in their bust. When I was at my highest weight of 218 I wore a 22/24, so many factors determine what size you wear.

TiggerLover,
We are EXACTLY the same! I'm shooting for a size 10 and hope after I lose 13 more lbs, I'll be there.

How tall are you? I'm 5'9" and 150, wearing 12's. If I were 130, I'm sure I would be a 10 or even an 8. Of course, I'd also need to be checked into a hospital!

This is very confusing!!

I am 5'6 and about 175. I'm pretty solid/muscular. I wear a comfortable size 14. 16's hang and 12's I have to lay down to get on.

I have no idea how it works!

I am 5'4" and weigh 153, and I am in a 14. If I don't mind not breathing, I can wear a 12. It discourages me, because I have lost 35 pounds, but only lost 2 sizes (well, maybe 4, part of me thinks I was a size 18 in denial!!).

I can remember being in the 160's and wearing 13/14's comfortably
I'm 5'7" and not very petite (bigger boned). At by 200 I'm in 18 I think by 220 I'm in 20's.

The size 8 post was from me. I weigh 168, I'm 5'7'', I wear an 8 in jeans. They are not tight, very comfortable. I'm fairly muscular, but apple shaped. I know I'm overweight, I can pinch fat around my middle. My bra size is 36DD, which means I CANNOT wear a dress or buy 2 piece outfits. If the top fits, you can get 3 of me in the bottom. It's very frustrating.
I'm as shocked as you are at my jean size. The point of my post was to say that I couldn't get into an old size 9 skirt (15 years old), just proving that the sizes have changed over the years.
My SIL is 2 inches taller than I am, weighs about 40 pounds LESS and wears a 10 jeans. Go figure!

Do we just diet and excercise until WE like what we see? That's a little scary if you don't have a realistic picture of yourself, but I'm confused. The standards keep changing!

You can tell it's Friday night.......I'm just rambling and asking deep questions..........
:D

When I weighed 130 I wore a size 14. Of course, this was waaayyyy back in the olden days. Today that size 14 would probably be a 10.

I'm about 5'3. I am always amazed when I read some of the weight loss success stories in magazines and someone who weighs 50 or 60 pounds more than I weigh is wearing a size 6 or 8 while I wear an 18

I figure they are a lot taller than I am. You know what they say, I'm not overweight...I'm under height ;)

I would be perfect if I was 7'2"

It has to do with height also. If you're short and weight lets say 150 pounds, you'll need al bigger size than someone who's tall and weights the same.

It doesn't make sense...

I am 5'6", carry my weight very portional I weight 160lbs right now. I think I started at about 167.5lbs... (how do I get a clippy??) anyway I wear a very comfy 12 but can't even think of a 10 yet... depends on the brand and stuff. My tummy isn't very large, unless I gorge on carbs! neither is my butt, it's my thighs and my arms..... my body fat or whatever that percentage is called is like 27% yikes...

Trying on wedding dresses, depending on the designer I am a 12 or 14

My best friend and matron of honor is 5'8", 150lbs, size 12 jeans and a size 6/8 dress... figure that out. We were trying on Matron of honor dresses for her and her hip bones stuck out and she looks way to skinny... it's all about your bones and where you carry your weight!

I have heard that wedding dresses have not changed sizes over the years. Most people have to buy a wedding dress that is one to two sizes larger than what they normally wear.

Hummmmmmmm, am I brave enough to go try on a wedding dress? :D
Uhhhh, I don't think so. I don't really want to know............

At 123lbs (5'2.5") I wear a loose 10
Im not one to wear skin-tight clothes. Friends have told me I should try an 8 but Im still reluctant.

Muscle mass has an awful lot to do with it as well. I'm 5 foot 4, and currently 142 pounds. Size 8s are comfortable on me (I have plenty of room for them to slide around). When I started my new WOL, I was up to 154, and the 8s were pretty tight (not laying down to get them zipped, but sucking in for the button part).

I'm very muscular all over, from the Tae Kwon Do (the tkd in my name). Some of the guys I work with were giving me a hard time today about why I'm dieting. When I told them I weigh over 140, they were really shocked (not just being nice about it). They said they would have guessed high 1teens or low 120s.

I'm personally dieting because I didn't like the way I felt. I want to be in a comfortable size 6 at the end of my plan, and I think that's reasonable given that I have about 13 pounds to go.

This is an interesting post. I agree that sizes are way confusing! I weigh 150 and am 5'5" and now can fit into 10s. I still wear some 12s depending on brand, but many of them fit loosely. I am pretty much pear shaped, with a small bust and waist. All my weight is in my butt, belly and thighs. I have to buy many 2 pc things versus dresses, because I am usually a small/medium on the top and Medium/Large on the bottom. When I try on many pants, they fit in the belly and thighs, but then the waiste is HUGE on me- major belt cynch-sack going on.

I think the clothing manufaturers need to get a clue and size similarly across the board. I have a pair of pants from Target that are a 16 that I still wear, just with a belt-when I was a 16, they were super skin tight. I don't get it; shopping is frustrating. Although at this size it is much easier to shop than it used to be.

Everyone hang in there - fine one or two things that fit you nicely and don't even look at what the stupid tag says!

I asked this same question on the board back in January and it basically came down to - No one knows what the clothes makers are doing. Some stores sizes vary, makers sizes vary, and alot has to do with measurements.

I'm 5'3" and weigh 155lbs or a little less, I am a size 12/14. 10lbs ago I was just a size 14. Now when I was in high school and got down to 135 lbs - I was still a size 12, but I also wasn't working out. I'm hoping to lose inches this time because I'm working out. My goal is to be in a size 10 - and if I am blessed with a size 8 then I will throw myself a HUGE party at the Grand Floridian!
