I had the same thing years ago, it started the same way , rough patch in the middle of my back really painful , it usually follows the path of a nerve, in my case it went all around my waist. It was very uncomfortable. I was out of work for a week originally , but because of my job requiring me to wear stockings and I couldn't have anything so tight around my waist, my employer would not let me go to work with just knee highs and a dress , even after the doctor called them up and asked them , so he took me out of work for a month.
There was no medication for them at the time, I had to let it run its course , I will never forget.
DD1 also did have the shingles 2 years ago, but she did get meds and her case was much easier.
BTW, I was told by the doctor, you CAN get them again and again, it doesn't happen too often but the disease stays dormid for the majority of the people , but sometimes it reacts again.

I'm sorry to hear this Steve. My dad had shingles about 2 years ago and I do remember him saying how painful it was. But once he was on the meds and some lotion it got better (the pain anyway). Took a while for the rash to go away. Apparently for 24 hours after you start medicine you are in a "contagious" state and so they sent him home from work. Even though he wasn't going to be touching anyone and it was covered. He wasn't happy.

Hope she gets through this and is more comfortable soon.

ugh! Well, the good news is that hopefully she got on the medication soon enough. It's only effective in the early stage. Her age is on her side too (older folks often suffer from post herpatic neuralgia ("after shingles").
