First, not to make anyone mad or step on any toes... this is just me venting, so please bear with me.

We're a little shy in points this year for an upcoming trip. There have been a few posts on the rent/trade board for points to rent at $7-$8 range. I know the current going rate is $10/point, but hey, I'm already paying dues and stuff so I figure $7-$8 would be good for me. In any case, we've been trying for days and contacting other DVC members for the extra points. The problem and the frustration that comes in is that most of the points already get rented to non-DVC members and we have to compete with them to get those prices and points. I know there have been more than enough debates on the DVC/non-DVC issue and I don't want this thread to end up that way. I just wish DVC members get 1st choice or something from other members.

Why should a private individual sell points to you for less than they would sell them to a willing buyer who is not a DVC member? This would mean you are asking a total stranger to take money out of their pocket so you can keep some in yours.

I'd like to pay less for things also, but I am not sure I understand your point.

I recently rented some points to a DVC member. It was my first time renting. I actually prefered renting to a member because I had less to explain.

I actually had to borrow points to rent. But that's okay because we are going on an Alaskan cruise in 2003 :D and will not be going to Disney:( . So, the member understood about cancelling etc.

However, the member was also willing to pay the going rate - $10 per point.

I don't think that just because you are a DVC member and are paying dues that you should get a lower rental rate. The person renting his/her points still has to pay his annual dues.

The point was that the seller is willing to sell the points at the $7/8 per point already, but I have to compete with non-DVC members to get that price. Sorry for the confussion.

Feel free to come here and vent....sounds like you're frustrated in trying to arrange your trip.

However, renting of points doesn't have anything to do with members/non-members....it's really just like making a reservation at any other hotel or buying a car that's in short supply. Whoever gerts there first and/or offers to pay a premium gets the points. I haven't got any experience with rentals but I would think it's more of a hassle for someone to go through transferring a few points to another member than it is to book a whole reservation for someone (member or non-member).

I hope things work out for you. You might want to think about what your future needs will be....maybe a 25 point add-on would make sense so you don't end up a few points shy every year or two.

I understand your frustration. $7-$8 per point is a wonderful deal for the purchaser. That's probably why all of those points are gobbled up so quickly.

I don't think diaman is expecting discounted points, just thinks we should consider "taking care of our own" before renting to others. The problem is that the number of non dvc folks looking for rental points will always far exceed members. If you need to rent your points, it would be hard to turn down a dozen offers from non dvc in hopes that a member might make such a request.
My guess is that posting "dvc member looking for points" would hold at least some clout for potential renters.

You can vent but I disagree with your suggestions. It has been made before on this forum in various ways. Things like you should only rent to members or should only rent to non members short notice or should not rent holidays to non members. I simply don't see the reasonableness of reserving rented points for members who could have bought more points if they chose and still could if they wanted (at least at 3 resorts). The non members I've rented to have to the person been courteous and thrilled to visit far more so than any member could have been on anything other than their first trip.

I personally wouldn't hold points for either group giving up a good rental opportunity for points I wouldn't personally use. The only problem I've had was with a member, a member of this board. As for price, pay what you can realizing that $7-8 per point is too low for anything except distressed points. Had it not been for the recession and 9/11, the price would be $11-12 pp by now.
