I teach first grade, and yesterday I was having the kids do a writing page about what they want to be when they grow up. One of my students said she wanted to be a cook. She asked me if she could make our wedding cake. She sat there and asked me what colors and what it should look like and drew a really cute cake. It was very sweet! I talk about my wedding periodically and I think my kids are as excited as me. Well, maybe not!

PS Let me know if anyone else wants one of these original cake masterpieces! ;)

Thanks! :) I'm not really sure why I posted this :rotfl: Guess I was just bored and wanted to post something :rotfl:

That sounds adorable! Can you scan it in and show us? (Or does that break some sort of privacy law...)

On this forum you don't need a reason. You did because you wanted to. Thanks for sharing.

pixiedust: :cake:

I'll see if I can scan it. If I cover her name I think it's ok. Oh wait, I sent them home with them on Friday after school- RATS! It was just so sweet because she is one of my lower, more disconnected students and it was such a light bulb moment for her to make a connection to writing/drawing and real life events! It does make teaching worth while :) :)

I also told my first grade class that I was getting married, and one of them raised her hand and asked, "Are you going to have a baby?" I said that I would have a baby some day, but that I would get married first. Then a little boy raised his hand and said, "Did you know my Mom and Dad got married WAAAAAY after I got born!" I paused...... and said, "Well, thank you for sharing." :)

I'm sure I'll be talking about it more and more as November approaches.

Yeah. I know what you mean. One of my students from last year would actually kiss my belly and say, "This is for the baby!" And my belly isn't as big as that! ...I don't think. But, I think that because I'm getting married, she thinks that babies come along with all of that. This year when I saw her again, she said basically the same thing, "You look like you're having a baby!" and I stopped her and said, "I'm not, and if I look like I am, than I must have a lot of belly fat. Do I?" :) and she said, "No." I think since her Mom has had several babies, that she expects the same from me. :)

My kindergarten class is also so excited about my wedding. It really is amazing how fast they learn about these things. While I haven't been asked the baby question, I have been asked if they can all attend... ;) I want so badly to say yes to them all!!!

Working with the little ones is so great! You never know when those "lightbulb" moments are going to attend, but when they do, all of the hard work and stressed days are worth it! I am glad that you had something so special happen in your class.... :wizard:

My students ask every year if I am having a baby and I'm not THAT fat either. I usually tell them no and that I'm not married yet....but they usually tell me that their mom isn't married either and she has a lot of them!!! I guess I don't take it personally anymore. I'm from a different culture than most of my kids.

Me too. Many of their families have more than 4-5 children and they are almost all out of wedlock.

Me too. I teach in the inner city. Just had open house the other night, so I stayed at school for 12 hours that day, I missed my violin lesson and two dance classes -- waste of my time! Sorry to complain, but my principal always does it on Thursdays, and it's the night I have my classes! I had three parents, all of whom I met before, but it beat some years when I had zero. But it's MY job to call them, introduce myself, and invite them in!

What state do you live in? I've tried to understand what you have under your name, but I'm never sure. BTW, that cake picture was so sweet! Things like that I save and don't send home....well, if I can get away with it. If it was writing, then maybe you couldn't.

We rarely have parents show up either. It's sad and it makes me love my kids all the more because I know I am the stability in their lives. I actually taught K last year and asked to loop up to first grade so that I could really be a strong force for them. I don't teach in the inner city, but it is considered a 'city' school (because we are in the district with the inner city schools) and it is about 95% poverty. I live in SC (my thing under my name means I grew up in PA, then lived in MD, and now live in SC.) We had our 12 hour day open house 2 weeks ago and another 12 hour day with PTA on Tuesday. Due to our lack of parental involvement all teachers are REQUIRED to attend all PTA meetings to show the parents that we support the school to try to motivate them to be more active.

PS- I couldn't keep the writing sample, but I did make a copy ;)

My cousin married a 1ST grade teacher and his mom was a 1ST grade teacher and she had her students make them a book. The book was advice on how to be a good husband/wife. It was really cute all the kids drew pictures.

That sounds like such a neat idea - something they will keep forever. :wizard:
