Hello-

I've met several people who have scored some nice discounts by showing up at port on sailing day. Recently, someone told me that due to 9/11 and security restrictions this isn't allowed any more. Security doesn't appear all that tight to me, so has anyone tried this strategy and gotten a great deal?

Security is indeed very tight...and the ability to simply show up, pay a fare and get on the ship simply isn't there. Its impossible.

Passenger lists are closed at least three days prior to sailing for initial security checks, and then finally closed two hours before sailing for the final check of the manifest.

Don't bother trying this - you won't get on. Cruiselines circulate last-minute deals at rock-bottom prices to past passengers in the local area a week or 10 days before the sailing. They also offer up sells from cheap cabins to unsold higher prices accommodations to those already booked. But there is no such thing as showing up "stand-by" and getting a cabin at the pier.

however if you are already on the cruise and decide and want to stay on for the next cruise you can book a room if available :)
