We have always flown to Disney and this was the first time we decided to drive. We retired this year so we had additional time and had to try this adventure. Just our opinions - we just plain did not like it. We stopped overnight both down and back and still were not fond of it. For us - it was very taxing on both of us - and I am used to driving at least 100 miles @ day, every day, when I worked and did this for years. It seemed as though serious road rage was affecting many drivers and it was very concerning. We have plenty of friends who do the drive yearly, but as long as we have the ability to fly, that we be our choice. Even though we had our car on site, we only used it two times. I applaud everyone who makes this drive, but even with airport security checks, that is how we will go. Just our opinion.

We drive a lot more than we fly - also from MD - I have to get really cheap fares to fly because if we fly we also rent a car in Florida so all that really impacts our vacation cost. And we don't mind the drive much either - we've done driving to Disney ranging from 22 hours each way to 14 hours each way (now) to 70 minutes each way when we lived in Florida! I do dislike the time it takes away from vacation though.

Driving also allows us to stop at my sister in law's house on the way down and we do that quite often.

Vicki - We really didn't know how well we would do, and now we know. I will say that we used many of the tips that were posted on these boards, and we were grateful. (Picking up the roomsavers booklets at the Visitors Centers helped us get a better room rate than AAA.)

We're close to retirement, have done 44 trips to WDW and in the earlier years I tried flying and hated it so we drove back then and a little after and then found Amtrak.....more than 15+ trips by train. This past trip we decided to drive down with our son in law, daughter and theiir baby do to the amount of stuff they wanted to take for the 11 month old. We haven't driven to Florida in alot of years and thought it would'nt be that bad.....it was! 17 hours straight thru, sitting in one position, watching all the other crazies, directions, car worries...cured me of thinking of that again.

We'll go back to the train, I can kick back, relax, have a cocktail and doze off...let someone else do the driving and worrying....I'll never fly again so it's the only way we're going to get there....it's a long trip, 36 hours, but the swaying and comfort of the train I love...no for some but we enjoy it, no TSA, getting there 3 hours before, cancellations...weather delays....check it out some day, now that you're both retired, time means very little and a train trip to WDW is an adventure all in its own...
