Captiva Island exceeded my expectations. Prior to leaving, there were different ads for high rise, 4 star hotels in Ft. Meyers, and it is tempting to start counting "stars". Sticking with our decision to stay in our 3 star accommodations however was a great decision. Tween Waters Inn is not pretentious. The outside of the guest room units looks very much like any motel/hotel. Inside however, we found the rooms nicely appointed. One could picture Ernest Hemmingway there. Tween Waters has had a lot of well known guests. Charles Lindberg, Teddy Roosevelt, and Ding Darling have all stayed there. There are beautiful little cottages on the property if larger accommodations were needed. FORTUNATELY, just DH and I were on this vacation. We had a great time. Everyone is friendly on the property, at the pool, on the bike path, in town, etc, etc. For those lucky enough to have boats, docking is available for $2 a foot. We met some very nice people who were guests; members of a yacht club who come frequently, have dock cocktail parties and in fact, invited us to join them. This seems to be the nature of the guests at Tween Waters Inn. We met young families, couples, and guests who were back for their 25th year.
We rented bikes and did a 25 mile ride to the Ding Darling Nature Refuge. We happened to arrive, totally unplanned, just as the bike tour was leaving the visitors center. I have never been one to get excited about "bird watching" but the enthusiasm of our guides was contagious and before I knew it I was shouting out, "Look, there is a roseate spoonbill!" :lmao: The restaurants that we chose were all fine and reasonably priced considering you are on an island, even if it is in Florida. We took a day and drove to the Everglades for an airboat ride. We saw lots of gators and it was well worth the trip. On the way back from the Naples area we took a short cut back to Captiva through Ft. Meyers Beach. What a relief to have NOT stayed there. The area was incredibly congested and we could have walked faster than we could drive. It was a relief to get back to the quiet friendliness of Captiva (and Sanibel).
We visited the Historic village and museum of Sanibel. Kudos to those volunteers that are willing to share their time and acquaint guests with the history of their island. The Sears and Roebuck House, ordered from the catalog and shipped in 30,000 pieces for $2211 in 1924, was worth the price of admission alone. I could have moved right in. For $450 you could get it assembled, and for another $215, someone would paint it. DH and I stopped to look at a smaller house across from the beach in Captiva. It was adorable. About 1500 square feet, built in 1940, refurbished and in move in condition. $2.1 million dollars. The entry level for real estate on Captiva is $800K and goes up to $38 million.

Glad you enjoyed your trip. Thanks for sharing.

Here are a couple of 'single family' homes going up within a half mile of Tween Waters Inn. I couldn't get either house in the same photo. ;)

My DW & I honeymooned there back in.............. uhhhhh.............. a few years ago. Very nice area, but that house ? Ugh. Pretentious & ugly.

I wouldn't want it but it looked like something out of the Great Gatsby! I would have loved to see the inside of it. The house I LOVED was tiny, and yellow with white trim and it looked like a classic 1940's Captiva house. Can't afford that either. ;)

Those types of homes were not there way back when I used to take my road trips across the state to Captive for the day. Yikes....sure takes away from the quaintness of it.

Yeah...what happened to "Old Florida?" That is what made Captive so great. That house looks like a pile of cement.

Ugh, that building looks like a library in Charleston, not a home on gorgeous Captiva. How ostentatious :sad2: My parents live on Sanibel Island, but I can't help but spend alot of my visiting hours on Captiva - we love going to The Mucky Duck. Great live music and you can't beat the location :goodvibes

Love that part of Florida. Glad you had a great trip.

Did you eat at the Bubble Room?

Did you eat at the Bubble Room?

We did. DH had a steak, which while it was "pan fried", it was very tasty. I had gumbo, greek salad and chocolate cake. Of course I couldn't eat all of the cake, so we took it and had it for lunch the next day. It was cute. A great place for kids and we were glad we went. We liked the Green Flash. I thought the food was good there as well. The Crow's Nest, right at Tween Waters Inn is a great deal. We went to the prime rib dinner, 2 for $24.99 and I wasn't expecting much for that price. It was excellent! Cooked as ordered, rare and med. rare for me, with a veggie and potato. I was surprised that it was as large and as good as it was. We also ate at the new rib restaurant, which is really counter service, either to go or eat there. Holy Smokes. The ribs were quite good and the sides tasted like home made. In fact, the bean had pulled pork in them and were better than home made. I loved the jalepeno corn muffins, although the muffins were ridiculously tiny (like tiny cup cakes) and there were only 3. Most days we had the continental breakfast at the Captiva House, although one day we had eggs benedict. On the way to the Everglades we stopped at the Island Cow for breakfast. Another good choice and a good value.

It looks totally out of place. One can only hope that they will plant a LOT of trees in front of it! ;) Apparently a father and son are building it. Captiva (and Sanibel) seem to be one of those places where everyone knows "everything". We heard about the 3 alligator deaths in recent years and the story about the gardener was particularly sad. In fact, the captain on the Airboat ride south of Naples told us about her also.
