Just off the Dream: Deck Chair HOGS

then you would be in the wrong as its disney policy not to reserve seats and that is what you would be doing.

Hence the mis-communication -- they are not RESERVED, they are OCCUPIED/IN USE/BEING USED AT THE MOMENT! That is not saving, that is USING! :teacher:

I guess the best solution is for everyone to bring coolers in case you need a drink (cause you are NOT allowed to leave your seat) and also do all your bathroom business in the seat or surrounding area as you are also apparently NOT allowed to use the bathroom facilities. And if you are hungry, good heavens DO NOT step away for a burger or fries or someone will throw your stuff to the ground!

I do believe some of you waste more time patrolling the area for possible chair hogs than you do having fun on your vacation :rotfl:

So because I am early riser I should wait till 9 to sit down in a chair so any person who deems waking up after 9 will be pleased.:confused3

So now it is 30 mins, i thought it was an hour in a different post. :confused3

That's not what I meant at all. If you're an early riser, and you have a chair early, then that's great....that's the way you like to spend your vacation. No problem.

But you said that if OTHER PEOPLE didn't get up early, then they aren't entitled to a chair.

And you said that everyone should just chill and enjoy their vacation....some people enjoy sleeping in on their vacation....they should be able to still find a chair at 9:00 or 10:00.....that isn't covered with a bunch of stuff left there by someone who's either eating breakfast, or put the things there and then went back to bed.

And I didn't say in an earlier post that it should be an hour. Someone else did.

"Early bird gets the worm"

Early bird is WELCOME to the worm, if early bird is either SITTING on it, or swimming near it, or going to the potty and coming right back.

Early bird does NOT get the worm by placing a bunch of items in the chair and coming back an hour later.

After this discussion, all I can say is thank God we don't use the pools on the ships and thank God we get a verandah.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I was on the 6th thru 10th cruise. We only used the adult pool once, left our stuff on a chair that we technically never sat in. No one cared. Rode the aquaduck twice, left our stuff on a chair that we technically never sat in. No one cared. I definitely think some people worry about what other people are doing way too much.

I think everyone agrees that it's OKAY to be USING the chair....even if that means going to the bathroom, getting food and bringing it back to your chair, getting a drink and bringing it back to the chair....etc......
And I think you're smart enough to know that's what people are saying.

I think most people have a problem with walking up to the pool at whatever time it is, and seeing tons of empty chairs with nothing but a pile of towels, flip flops or other personal belongings on them, and not a soul in sight....anywhere.

There IS a difference, and everyone knows that.

I think the problem comes more with..."How long is the accepted amount of time to be away from the chair".

And THAT question should only be settled by a Disney CM.

How do you know nobody cared if you were not there? If there are plenty of seats to be had then you are right, no one cares. But if people are standing around the pool and unable to sit because your items need a spot - they probably cared.

On the other hand, what are you to do with your stuff when you go on the slide? Hold it over your head and hope for the best? Some one earlier said they bring their mother-in-law to hold the chair - perhaps you could rent one already on board to hold your stuff?

Honestly this is never going to happen just purely because the ratio to pool side lounge chairs to passengers is one sided. I still believe everyone should lighten up and enjoy their vacation not begrude someone else's theirs!!!

And I didn't say in an earlier post that it should be an hour. Someone else did.
My point exactly!!! Different intrepretations of who is a chair hog!!!

Sure I am -- but if you read the majority of the complaints, the common thread is you CANNOT leave the chair. Many have said if you leave to get food or for more than 30 (even 15) minutes, then you have the right to have your chair taken! And that is what my comment about fist fights was about -- I could just see someone removing people's belongings and getting caught by the owner.

Hey, there is a thread about CC and someone posted that they went swimming and when they came back, not only was someone sitting in their chair, but he was reading their book!!!!! :scared1: Now that's just wrong. ;)

Some think they are "entitled" to claim chairs early morning and use them all day, while the counterpoint seems to be "entitlement" to come any time to the pool and throw your stuff off the chair if you are not IN IT. [Hey, we could do another whole thread about the laundry rooms and how long is someone's laundry allowed to be in a stopped washer or dryer without being thrown on a table (or on the floor as we have witnessed someone do)]

I hope you are right though that the majority mean you can be in use of the chair without physically sitting in it, but it doesn't sound like that to me by some of the comments so far :confused3 Otherwise, more CMs WILL have to get involved

How do you know no one cared? Perhaps they were just being polite or there simply weren't a lot of cruisers on your winter cruise who wanted to spend time lounging?

I don't think that anyone really spends a lot of time watching for chair hogs or others who disregard Disney's published policies and rules while on their vacation. I've never seen any disputes over chair hogging by the pools and we spend a lot of our time by the pools on our cruises. So for those of you who are glad you don't use the pools, it's not the free-for-all that this thread makes it seem like. It's actually quite enjoyable and a good alternative to just staying on the verandah. Plus, the verandah's don't have loungers (at least mine didn't as I wasn't in a suite) and the verandah isn't always in the sun.

For us, if we can't find two chairs together, we simply just go up to Deck 10 (On the magic/wonder) when there are no seats available by the pool. It often works better as there is a lot of shade by the pools. I'm not going to stand around counting 30 minutes or an hour to watch for a chair to open up.

And I won't take off anyone's stuff. If I am relaxing next to a chair occupied by stuff and not a person, and someone came up to me and asked if the chair next to me was taken, I would let that person know that no one had been there since I'd been there and suggest they ask a CM to remove the stuff on the chair. That way it could be returned to lost and found as published in the Navigator.

I can understand why someone who was inconvenienced on their cruise because there were a lot of seats constantly being occupied by "objects" instead of people could return from their vacation and express their frustration on a board like this. They probably do it to make others aware of the fact that they might be inadvertently breaking Disney's rules by keeping their stuff on chairs for prolonged periods. Whether or not your stuff was moved is irrelevant. While your belongings were on a chair that you didn't use, perhaps one or more couples who wanted to lounge by the pool and read a book could not locate two chairs close together as your stuff (and other people doing the same thing) was sitting on unoccupied chairs. They probably let it go and just moved on and it didn't ruin their vacation. They may have noted it in the back of their mind and when a thread like this pops up, they might join in to say that they were inconvenienced and express that they think others should be more courteous when on vacation by actually abiding by the rules set forth by Disney about not saving chairs by the pools.

This is printed on the Navigator each and every day::

No Reserved Seats Policy
As a courtesy to all Guests, we kindly advise that the saving of seats is not permitted in the Walt Disney Theater, and the saving of sun loungers is not permitted on Decks 11 and 12. Items left unoccupied will be returned to lost and found at Guest Services Deck 3 Midship.

I realize that many guests ignore Disney's policies if it inconveniences them on their vacation. It's not like they are going to issue you a fine (except perhaps for smoking in the rooms). I also don't think that there are a lot of hall monitors out there looking for violators as some on this thread seem to think. I do think that it's easy to judge on these boards and condemn others for expressing an opinion as it appears others are doing on this thread.

I went to the gym almost every morning on our last cruise and there were already people putting towels and flip flops on chairs at 7am. I could have done this because I was an early bird, but I did not. We struggled to find seats almost every day we tried, but I still refused to leave my stuff there before we were ready to utilize the chairs, to me that just seems wrong and selfish.

It's in black and white..

Items left unoccupied...that means a body occupying space..it can't get any clearer than that...it also says no shorts in the dining area...that also gets 'looked' over many times..(guilty! My father had a long excursion and came straight to dinner still in shorts...we were worried, but then saw several others doing it..so it must be 'okay') Not so..I think that is what has happened here...so many others do xyz, so why the fuss? Simply because the black and white words on Navigators daily says.."items left unoccupied"...I see no grey in that...it's up to Disney to enforce as many have already said it before...

I guess they have a squeaky wheel syndrome...if 80% of the ship are following the guidelines, there are no problems...but as that 20% that don't start creeping up to the 50% mark..there are problems...all that is expected is that you be considerate and mind the ship's policies.

yep! you're butt's not in the chair and someone else's butt wants to be. It's nice that you use it to hold your stuff but even if you're in the pool, you're not using the chair so everyone else on board has the right to. I don't like the idea of moving someone's personal things though, I think I'd stick to just towels. Though courtesy for your fellow cruisers and treating them how you'd like to be treated would indicate that you would remove your personal belongings from the chair yourself (and put them in the non-existent cubbies!) :confused3 since you'll be in the pool and won't need a chair for that 15 minutes or so until you come out again. At that point, look for a new chair.

Absolutely not. Totally rediculous and beyond rude to wait til someone gets up for a few minutes to move their things? Heaven forbid someone has to pee! DCL's policy is no saving chairs, not move for a minute(s) and have someone take your stuff. But i've mailed someone to get a detailed explanation just to prove how rude and inappropriate that would indeed be. Courtesy?! I'm not sure you understand the word in all honesty. If we're spending the day by the pool, expecting anyone to get a new seat any time they get up is comical.

with that logic if i go to the hot tub and stick my gum on my seat that my spot when i return to the hot tub ?

OK, I confess....I am a chair hog..policy or not, I spend the day at sea around the pool. Emphasis on the word AROUND. I will go to the food area and bring lunch back to my lounge chair. I will go down to my room and get something the spouse wants. I will take out 30 minutes to do you know what. I will go check on my child..

I will not do laundry, take a nap in the stateroom, workout or go shopping.

If I follow Disney's guidelines though I am a chair hog and so be it. If someones bum is in my chair when I return, I will kindly ask them to remove their bum or heaven forbid they get up for any amount of time..

I think that this issue has been blown out of proportion with extreme examples on both sides. I don't think there are lots of uptight guests looking for rule violators on the ship and who go around moving people's belongings. The only time I've seen a heated discussion about seat saving was in the front of the Walt Disney THeater.

I also think that it would be presumptuous to assume that someone sitting in "your" chair when you returned did so out of malice. A CM could have removed your belongings and a fellow guest may have innocently sat in the chair as there was nothing indicating that it was yours. For you to ask them to move is wrong IMO. All you've done is make yourself look rude and make the other guest uncomfortable on his/her vacation for doing something we all do nearly everyday - taking an empty seat in a public place.

Well, I'm the one that said that, and I wasn't judging why others like to sit around the pool. We have a pool at home, so we don't feel the desire to sit around the pool on the ship. It's just too noisy and crowded. And I always sit in the shade, anyway, so my verandah is more pleasant. For me. Which I suppose is good for those who DO like to sit by the pool, so my butt isn't hogging a chair that someone else might want. :lmao:
