This is my daughter's and her husband's flight to Japan next year on Delta. When she looked today, someone picked the seat that was sitting directly beside them, even though there are SO MANY rows available with no one sitting in them! What? Really? 🤪🙄🤪🤪 This really made her anxious about the situation. She ended up upgrading to a two seat row in Delta Premium Select for a pretty penny.

I can't blame her though, this sort of thing happened to me once in a doctor's office waiting room, and I too moved seats.😆😆

It’s an exit row, and a lot of people prefer aisle seats. Also, perhaps the rest of their party is occupying the three seats across the aisle.
I thought that too about the family thing in the following row, but I personally would have picked the seat in the row to the right where there is no one else. I don't know, who knows?

Or could be just three of them, so the aisle by SiL, and aisle and middle across the aisle.

Upgrading simply because someone is sitting next to you when the flight is next year seems bizarre to me. As PP said, more than likely all seats will be taken by the time the plane takes off.

If there are just three, why not pick an row where they could sit completely together. Just odd. Like that time that man sat right beside me in the doctor office when there was dozens of empty chairs with no one else near. I too moved. 👍

I would have assumed it was a person flying alone, who preferred aisle (and maybe the little bit of extra leg room from an exit row) but did not want to take a single seat in an empty row in case a group of 3 came along later and wanted to sit together.
Is there extra legroom there? The only extra legroom is in that one seat that my daughter had picked. There's tons of extra legroom in the seat in front of that person.

I do this when I fly (normally first class). If my options are an aisle with a window occupied and an aisle with an empty window seat I take the one where the window is occupied. I know the odds of a seat in first class staying empty is much less than a party of two booking the seats. That way it eliminates the theoretical couple who books trying to get one of us aisle people to switch to a window seat so they can sit together.

There is always the chance in this case the person didn't actually select that seat...but the airline or a travel agent did. While many people immediately select a seat, not all do and sometimes an automated program will assign a seat. It usually has no rhyme or reason to the seat selected.

And lastly maybe this person just wants a new travel buddy :)

😄 The travel buddy, that is what she was worried about on a 14-hour flight.

I also thought it was nice of them to pick that seat (either if its a 4 across or a solo) because they didn't want to spoil a larger seat area for a larger group of 3 that may want to sit there......and I would also rather sit by a couple than a chance of 2 other strangers, as the couple might be coordinating getting up, and maybe even getting cozier (using each other's personal space, not anything farther than that) than having to maneuver the arm rest conundrum with 3 strangers managing the 4 rests....

I would have picked the seat directly in front. Makes no sense unless it was a computer doing it.

from what it looks like, and I haven't seen this configuration, but isn't that a wall in front of the seat in front? Sometimes a seat in front of me allows me more space for my feet than a wall. Can you put things under the seat in front of you in an exit row? I would also choose that instead of a wall because I don't like having to get up every moment I want something out of my bag.

There are a lot of reasons people choose things :)

Could be cultural too. I remember this story, Person A was first on a bus every day. And the same person would get on at the second stop. Person B would always sit in the seat next to Person A, even though the rest of the bus was empty. One day Person A asked Person B why, with a whole empty bus, they always sat right next to them. And Person B said, in their culture it would be rude not to do so.

Ahhhhhhh, wow.

As others have said, it was likely all along someone was going to sit in that seat. The only way to avoid that situation, if she doesn't want someone next to her, is to buy seats that are only a pair, or buy all 3 seats in the row....... Upgrading to the 2-seat row should ease the anxiety a bit for a long flight. I expect their scenario will be the same whenever they book to fly home from Japan......
