This is my daughter's and her husband's flight to Japan next year on Delta. When she looked today, someone picked the seat that was sitting directly beside them, even though there are SO MANY rows available with no one sitting in them! What? Really? 🤪🙄🤪🤪 This really made her anxious about the situation. She ended up upgrading to a two seat row in Delta Premium Select for a pretty penny.

I can't blame her though, this sort of thing happened to me once in a doctor's office waiting room, and I too moved seats.😆😆

It’s an exit row, and a lot of people prefer aisle seats. Also, perhaps the rest of their party is occupying the three seats across the aisle.
I thought that too about the family thing in the following row, but I personally would have picked the seat in the row to the right where there is no one else. I don't know, who knows?

Or could be just three of them, so the aisle by SiL, and aisle and middle across the aisle.

Upgrading simply because someone is sitting next to you when the flight is next year seems bizarre to me. As PP said, more than likely all seats will be taken by the time the plane takes off.
