in late April and early May (surprisingly, they're less booked up from mid-May forward, when Star Wars weekends start).

Is that typical for these resorts to be full during this period and, if so, is it because of conventions or something?

I was wondering this as well. I will be there the last week of April and the BC was booked so I made reservations at the YC. It seems there are no GV rooms left at this point.

The Flower & Garden Festival could have something to do with it.

Were you checking only the special offers? It very well could be that there is no further availability for those dates since the offer has been out there for quite a while now. I was able to pull up available rooms at all of the Epcot resorts for the last week of April at rack rates.

It could also be that you might find availability by shifting your arrival/departure dates by a day or so.

Couple of things going on. Flower and Garden Festival is certainly part of it. I get the idea that this year with some of the Food and Wine-like food kiosks being available, there might be more interest in visiting Epcot in the evening. Some of April is possibly Spring Break/Easter. I, too, find it interesting that the rooms are heavily booked that time of year. There are AP discounts available, so that makes it even more perplexing. For the past two years, we have gone down and stayed at one of the Epcot/International Gateway resorts that last weekend of Flower and Garden/first Star Wars weekend. It has never been particularly crowded that weekend--though March and April are often crowded with Spring Break guests.

They're adding Food and Wine to the Flower and Garden festival for the first time; my guess was that this change is going to kick crowds up considerable as word gets out. Maybe when it comes to staying onsite, it's kicked crowds up already. :confused3

F & G combined with spring breaks makes YC/BC busy in April. I booked YC (with a big discount) for early June last year and the CM on the phone couldn't believe there was so much availability with my PIN left during SWW (but lots of kids were still in school) -- IMO the biggest factors in WDW reservations are school breaks and special events and when they coincide you see hotels fill up.
