Just need to vent a bit...

However, I am with the OP and others who say we should not be penalized for having a family of five. Paying for 2 rooms is essentially paying for accomodations for 8 when we only need room for 5! I know there are options but what if I don't want the theming of POR? Or a cabin that costs as much as 2 rooms! Asking for one more resort that offers accomodations for 5 is not unreasonable. And as far as the suites in Pop or the all stars go, someone stated that they think they will be priced at around 200% of the cost of one room. Again that is paying for 8 when you are sleeping up to 6. This doesn't seem like a great solution to me!

Then why do'nt thye ahve rooms that only sleep three at a lower cost? Or two? or songles? Do you see where this is leading?

Disney chose to stick to an industry standard which accomodates the average guest.

And frankly the resorts have been so full lately that I hardly think they are losing sleep over the small number of guests who choose to go offsite due to family size.

The vast majority of hotels also offer roll aways, too, to accomodate another child. That's where Disney is lacking. Instead of offering one, they want you to upgrade to a deluxe.

I feel your pain !! That's why I bought in OKW 10 years ago it was the best investment I ever made and my kids are always confortable (2 Girls & a Boy) when we go :thumbsup2

Just to add more fuel to the fire.....why do Florida residents get discounts? On top of the nice weather, they have less milage to travel and more oppourtunities to go.(Disney could make big $$$ off them) Us Massachusettes residents don't get discounts to go to Fanuiel Hall or the Freedom Trail???? :rotfl: Just something to think about.... :goodvibes

Disney may in fact have nefarious reasons for not offering roll aways and making families upgrade against their will. I always thought it was because it's too much trouble. It's a pain to store roll-aways, deliver roll-aways to the room, remove the roll-away when the people check-out, etc, etc for thousands and thousands of rooms. Plus, there is really no room for a roll away in the Value resorts, and it would be a pretty tight squeeze for one in a moderate resort. And then what happens when the last roll-away is taken and your family of 5 (or more!) checks in?

BTW, don't go over to the DVC boards and brag that you have 5 people in an OKW studio. We DVC owners are a little sensitive on that topic, especially when a renter disregards the rules.

We are a family of 5 -- DH and I made a choice to have a third child and accept everything that goes along with that choice (including more expenses for the remainder of our lives). When we travel we like to follow the rules - we feel that it sets an example for the way that we want our children to live their lives. We save (alot - DH has a separate vacation club account deducted from his check everyweek, we have a "Disney Dollars" collection jar in the kitchen etc.) to be able to afford to stay at a deluxe for at least 10 days every other year. This is yet another choice. I am sure we could afford to go every year if chose to stay in two rooms at a value, however we enjoy deluxe accommodations, we enjoy doing breakfast and dinner at table service restaurants etc. Again - choices - how my particular family chooses to vacation.

Disney allows this - they offer many choices for the many people who choose to enjoy their hospitality.

Just my $.02 - I do not mean to offend anyone :)

Whew. Maybe I missed a post by someone, but who bragged they got 5 people in an OKW studio? :confused3

We still go back to the same question I posed earlier - does Disney want and value the business of the larger family? This time I will add the caveat of a larger family on a budget?? That is the crux of the matter. If the OP doesn't think they have the accomodation she needs at the price she is willing to pay then she can seek it elsewhere. If enough families feel the same way then the free market system will work this problem out in good time. Disney will respond with lower priced accomodation to attract the larger family seeking more space or it will lose market share. They are obviously reacting to the success of the family suite concept (Nick suites, Holiday Inn etc..) and building the family suites at the pop resorts. It might solve lots of people problems. I think if you look at Disney's marketing they are very very sure on who their customer is - a family of 4 with a teen and a child. They design the bulk of their packages and advertising to reach their core market. They build their hotels, set their rates etc..to meet the needs of their core customer and I am sorry to say that those of us with 3 or more kids - are not their target market. I for one am not losing any sleep over it I am very happy with my 2 kids plus my woops!! baby - or should I call him my lifestyle choice??

I also have a family of 6. It does tend to get expensive. I think that if they can offer a MYW package for $ 1500.00 for family of 4 which comes to $ 375 per person. I would love for them to offer something similar for a family of 6 at $ 2250.00 or even $ 2500.00.
We have stayed off site a couple of times now. This past May we stayed at the Nick Hotel with the 6 of us and it was small but comfortable but I think it would be nice to have all the bells and whistle Disney offers to a family of four with the same type of discounts.

We actually got a really good deal from ebay for OKW. I like the kitchenette idea, too, and ,most importantly ,are the queen size beds. Putting my two boys on a double would cause WWIII during the night :goodvibes Like I said before, it's only for a few nights to get our 'Disney Fix" then we are off to the vistana ... :teeth:

wow hasnt this become a debate?
Anyway, we families of more than 4 DO expect to pay for our extra child, like we DO pay for them every single day. My second and third children happen to be twins, so do not scold people saying it was a choice and live with it. I personally chose to have two pregnancies, and was blessed that the second one was twins! I am quite happy, although tired since I had all my children at an older age, and I do pay more for everything, and yes I had to go out and buy a new dining set, etc to accomodate. I do not think that families going to a family oriented vacation spot should be penalized for having wonderful large families.
All the poster has asked is for more options to stay onsite.
And yes we do eat at fancy upscale table meals, all the time! Counter service is great for a quick breakfast or lunch but I am not unlike any other mom whether she has 1 or 10 kids, I also enjoy sitting down and getting waited on for once!
It was fun venting on this subject though! :crowded:

IN general those discounts are offered during off seasons as a way to get people to come in and spend money. The FL Resident AP is discounted figuring that it will entice people to visit more often and thus spend more money.

Good post. I agree whole heartedly that the OP had a simpler reason to vent than this whole "lifestyle choice" debate, and I only have 2 girls, err, lifestyle choices, myself.

People are very defensive, it seems, with any suggestion that Disney could do things a little better in some areas. It seems to me that giving larger families the same value per person, not the same total price, would be in WDW's best interests, as well as those with larger families. I suppose that's the reason WDW is building all those suites in the value resorts now.

The OP shouldn't be sneaking anyone into a room meant for 4 people (and I hope that doesn't come to pass, as I mentioned earlier), but that doesn't negate the merit of the original point: there's a dearth of places that will sleep more than 4 at WDW, without having to pay for a second room. I haven't heard anyone suggest that rooms need to accommodate more than 4 for the same price as only 4 people. 4-only rooms, with very few larger places to offer, was an oversight on WDW's part, which they're now correcting, albeit pretty late in the game.

... Why do they not allow 5 in a studio or one-bedroom, but five are more than welcome at the deluxes which are pretty much the same size? As it is for our upcoming trip in June, we are staying at OKW studio and to do that, I could only list two of my kids on the reservation. (though I'm not losing sleep over it) ...

I can't believe that you would lie about something like this. That's just wrong. I hope you don't yell at or punish your children for lying to you.

I hope DVC doesn't find out and evict you from your room. Or better yet, take the member to the carpet for allowing you to have five in a studio.

Room occupancy is based upon the number of exit available and the width of the exits so that everyone can escape during a fire at night or when the space is most likely fully occupied.

The family with the lower disposable income will spend les on the vacation. They will eat out less, buy less souveniers, spend less park days, any number of things to spend less money, because there is less to spend to begin with. It's simple economics.

Anne
Your "simple economics" only hold true if everyone starts out with the same income. Each person has a different set of circumstances when it comes to their financial resources. I have found that in it pays to keep an open mind and realize that we do not know everything about everyone.

You don't need to attack her! Not classy at all.

We are a family of 5 also. We tried POR last Oct..didn't knock our socks off but there is no other choice in moderates. Since POFQ, & CS, CBR (CBR rooms are slightly larger) are all around the same square footage, I wonder why they all cannot have at least some rooms with a trundle like POR? It would be nice (not even for the money..just for variety) to have more moderates that can accomodate 5 guests like POR does).

I'm a single parent with one child. When I book a room, I only need room for two, but the room will accommodate 4. Should I get a discount? :scratchin

Anyone know when Disney will open the value suites? I hope they allow both large and small families to book the value suites. pixiedust:

That's exactly my point!

I can't wait to hear the uproar when a family with two kids books a value suite so they can each have their own bed and someone with four kids is unable to book for that same time frame.
