Yes its is quite late in my neck up the woods, and I know that I haven't been around here very long, or posted to extensively but I need some serious encouragement... I just got down sized.

The quote "Honesty you didn't do anything wrong, nothing. This is my least favorite part of this job. We just can't support someone of your experience and position at this time financially, and we are extremely sorry for any inconvenience that we may have caused you it was completely unintentional."

Yes it hurts. The worst part about it, I loved the position and I relocated for the position specifically.

Does anyone know of a full-time graphic design position that is held virtually (home office work / freelance)?

Fun/good times...

I typically do not go online and post suck things, but this just seemed like the best place to turn in this dark hour for a shoulder to lean on.

Thank you DIS, lets hope the second part of the week is better than the first! Thank you for listening, I truly appreciate it.

Sorry to hear that you were laid off. The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago and I'm in the same field you are. Unfortunately it's a crappy economy right now and it's happening to a lot of people. The good news is that you can file for unemployment. I'm not sure what state you live in but here in NY they extended unemployment because of how many people have lost their jobs. I know it won't be as much as you were making but at least it's something. Keep your chin up and start sending resumes out. I'm sure something will come your way soon. :-) Remember that you're not alone..there are SO many people in the same situation as you are and we feel your pain! ;)

I am so sorry to hear this. I received this in my email box today and thought I'd share...

SEEING THINGS PLAINLY,
KEEPING IT SIMPLE

I am now receptive to the idea that . . .
I can make things more difficult than they need be.

It really isn't as hard as you are making it. It's really quite simple. Unfortunately, you have so much "stuff" attached to it, you are creating a burden where there need not be one. You are creating a problem where none exists. You are causing yourself a great deal of upset for no reason. There is really no reason to fight or argue about it; to explain or to demand an explanation. You are clear!

You did not like what happened. It did not honor you. It was a violation of your boundaries. It was not in keeping with the agreement you made or the agreement someone else made with you. What is happening or has happened is not your choice, nor is it of your making. So it's really very simple! Stop looking and asking for an explanation. Stop demanding that people do what they have already demonstrated an unwillingness or inability to do. Accept what has happened and decide what you are going to do about it. Once you make the decision that honors you, move on!

Until today, you may have been prone to making the realities of your life a bit more difficult than they need to be. Just for today, accept what you know and feel to be right for you without trying to convince others that it must be right for them.

Today I am devoted to seeing things plainly and keeping it simple!

I don't even know what graphic designers do, actually. But if I hear of anything, I'll certainly post it.

I'm sorry you got downsized. I know it must be very scary.

I hope you find something very soon. Fingers crossed!

That is very interesting.

Keep your chin up! Sometimes when you look back to this time from the future, it may be the best thing that could have happened to you. About 20 years ago my DH lost his job and we had just bought a house and had a baby. Needless to say we were slightly panicked.... We decided to make a go of going into business for ourselves and it was the best thing we ever did! If he hadn't gotten layed off, we never would have taken the risk. Look at this as an opportunity and it may be a little easier to take!

I'm really sorry you lost your job. Happened to me about a year and a half ago after working for the company for more than 15 years. Broke my heart, hurt my feelings, made me angry, and for awhile really made me bitter. I cried...a lot. I felt like I had lost all my friends, and in large part I did, since after so many years my personal life and my work life were all tied up together.

I say all that to tell you that while survival in this economy is hard, it can be done. I spent the next year exploring what I could do. I couldn't do what I did before - there isn't another place within 5 hours of here that I could work for. I explored businesses I could start. I got really creative. Then, just as I got ready to start a business, a person I had worked with for years at my old job asked me to work for her as a contractor. I now work at home, set my own hours, and make more money than I ever did before.

My best advice is to get a portfolio together, and an online presence, and get yourself out there. Volunteer everywhere. Get your work seen. If it's good, people will talk about it and want it. Network. Make contacts. Join associations. Not all of them cost money. Just don't crawl in a hole, which is what I felt like doing more than anything.

Well, let me amend that. For just a little while, depending on how long the unemployment is going to last, spend some time taking VERY good care of yourself. These people hurt you, and now you are going to prove to yourself that you didn't deserve it. Buy yourself little treats that won't break the bank. Do things that make you happy. Just don't give in to the thinking that you did anything wrong. There are jillions of us out here, and we didn't do anything wrong either. My heart is with you, sending you all the care and support I can! Sorry this is SO long, but it's a subject very near and dear to my heart.

I know how you feel. But it turned put to be one of the best things that happened to me. I was able to finish school and internships without stressing. Just keep checking the papers and Career builder for jobs. Things will fall into place. Keep your chin up and file for unemployment. It may not feel good, but every penny helps.

I'm in the same boat. Was downsized Feb 4th. Been to a few interviews, but nothing yet.

Lets keep in touch.

Hang in there. DH's entire department was outsourced last year. They let him go first and then the rest of the gang a month later, after they had time to train their 'replacements.'

We keep hearing how the market is picking up, but we are not seeing it in his industry. Other have made good suggestions thought - volunteer your time so you get your name out there, start blasting out resumes, also really rely on your network of friends and previous colleagues. DH finally got a contract in his field upon recommendation from some former co-workers.

In the mean time, be sure you apply for unemployment. DH was reluctant to do so since I still had a job and many people were in worse financial shape than we. I reminded him that he paid in to the system for decades and this was what it was meant for.

Keep your chin up! It will get better As many have said before, this may prove to be the best thing that ever happened to you. Take some time to "smell the roses", take care of yourself, be open to whatever happens. And remember better things are out there!

Yes, it stinks. And you have a right, and probably should, let yourself feel everything you are now feeling. Not wrong to wallow a bit.

But then, you will pick yourself up. It really isn't your fault. I work in HR and I have to tell many folks bad news. My rule is I always tell the truth. Always the best path.

Stay positive. As many of sad, this will work out and could end up being a very good thing.

I think it's good you are reaching out to the community. There are a lot of very nice people here who will be able to help.

Best wishes. :flower3:

I'm so, so sorry to hear this news. You definitely have my best wishes and sympathies. It's such a difficult economic time right now, and there are so many people struggling.

In 2007, I lost my University research job. Times were tight and grants were just not getting funded. However, one thing lead to another and I ended up at a neighboring institution that I like even better. Plus, I was asked to become a correspondent for the DIS. So things worked out even better than I could have imagined.

Keep your chin up, and don't ever hesitate to come here for support.

Thank you everyone for your support. I have been given some invaluable information on this thread. I am truly appreciative of both this fine community and the people involved with it.

In the words of Pete, "the DIS community absolutely floors me at times."

That is precisely how I feel right now. Thank you again for all your support I will try to keep everyone posted on how I managle to wrangle a freshly cut career path.

*Chin firmly placed in the upright position*

I absolute know how you are feeling. I'm not in that industry, so I don't know the best way for you to go about this, but when I was unemployed I remember someone telling me you have to treat looking for a job like it is your job. At first, I got stuck in an emotional rut where you are home all day, stay in your PJs, don't talk to other people and if you are anything like me, you can't let yourself do that. I had to make myself get up like I was going to work and spend the day hunting for a job, tweaking my resume/cover letters, sending them out, then I started volunteering and interning at various place and getting myself known to others in the field so that when something was available I was ready for it. Even though I wasn't interested in getting another degree, I started taking classes and met others in the field there as well (I did end up with a MA after 5 years of this). I have been working temporary jobs and assignments for the past 6 years and as of 5 weeks ago I finally have a full time permanent position. As frustrating as it all was, I stuck with it and never let up till I got what I wanted.

I wish you the best of luck, and keep your hopes up because you never know who you might meet here or anywhere that has your next opportunity waiting for you.

Just a quick updates, I found employment! While making the rounds it looks like there is an opening at a company I used to work with!

Woot!

I want to thank the DIS so much for the support that was given to me during my time of need. I know that it was for just a very short time although it was extremely helpful.

I wish everyone that is still looking for employment to keep your chin up, things can and will get better!

Thank you again!
