I became a single mom right before my son started kindergarten, and took my first solo trip when he was in kindergarten. I was a little nervous, but it was great - I was hooked!! As he grew up (he's 21 now) we did many trips together, but after 4th grade I stopped taking him out of school and went solo during those months. Now he's grown, and I'm in a long-term relationship and since his work takes him away from April to Sept each year, I still get to enjoy solo trips during that time. I love our trips as a couple, and when my son & girlfriend join me/us....but I really really love the solo trips!
The best part about going solo is doing exactly what I want, when I want, without regard for what anyone else wants or doesn't want. My boyfriend hates to walk....but I love wandering aimlessly. So, on the solo trips I zig zag back & forth across a park at my whim, while with him we tend to tour more efficiently. I'm happy to graze/snack, so I do that on a solo tip, and on our trips I suck it up and eat more meals in restaurants. I'm lucky to have the best of both worlds!
My advice - go for it, and do whatever the heck you feel like doing!
