It is growing up the wall right along my bedroom window. I have tried sawing through its stems but it keep growing:eek: The other day there was this gigantic 4 inch wide horrid black spider in the house. I know they have been nesting in the ivy - yuck I hate spiders. :p :(

Hi magicmouse, it's great to see you again! :) Have you been able to work on plans for the Japanese themed garden you were interested in?

I know that some varieties of Ivy can be extremely invasive, in fact, some landscapers won't even plant it! I don't know what to advise you to do, besides digging up and removing as much of the root as you can. A lot of hard work if it's a big plant, and you might have to do it more than once!

I'm not too fond of spiders either!!! :)

LoL... my hubby has really been into burning things off this year to get rid of unwanteds in difficult areas.

If your house is brick you could cut the ivy, rip it down, then burn the base plant.

Of course, if it's not brick, I wouldn't try this.

LOL, maybe you should give me some cuttings to grow on my "rip rap"!

YUCK! to that *creature-feature* spider...I don't blame you for being upset!

I don't know how you feel about using chemicals, but I know when we were trying to get our ivy under control, the local hardware/garden shop said he sold a chemical we could put down & in a short while later it would pull right up. I don't think that would help the *root* of the problem, but could help to get it under control so you could get to the root.

We didn't use the chemical though, we already did the hard part of manually cutting it back...the previous owners didn't take care of anything & it was growing chaotically up our trees & fence & about to take over our lawn.

Best of Luck! :)

Oh dear.... we had ivy that made it's way into the brick mortar on our house, climbed a tree and actually became part of it, went unfder the cedar shakes and lifted them. Not to mention the things that could live in it. Spiders, I never even thought of that. How horrible.
I never got rid of it. We moved. If I had stayed I would have used an herbicide on it. Even though I hate chemicals. In this case "better living through chemistry".
It's too destructive to let go.
I liked it the first year then it went wild and strangled anything in it's path.
Good luck, my thoughts are with you.

OMG...I had no idea!

It just looks so pretty there in a small patch under the trees/shrubs...though it is a pain to keep it down the trunks & from taking over.

Maybe we'll get lucky & Isabel will kill it. ;)

I just retracted a post to dianeschlicht about planting "good ole ivy." :(

Have you tried boring a hole about six inches down into the main stalk, filling it with table salt, and putting a plug of putty on top to seal the salt in. That kills trees, I am just wondering if it would do the same with ivy. What do you mean a 4 inch spider - and you are still standing. They would still be trying to convince me to go back into the house - I cannot think of anything more terrifying than a 4 inch spider. Oh!!!!!
