Just got taxed at work

When were you told they would take $59 & I assume that would be per month?

You even admit its better for you than driving your own vehicle.

but he is not allowed to drive it anywhere except to and from work or when he goes on call

Which is a heck of a lot more than most people get! He is getting practically free transportation into work every day plus he doesn't have to maintain and pay for 2 cars if his wife wants a car during the day or to go to work.

My DH is on call 24 hours a day also and he gets nothing. Gets called into work he has to use his own car and gas to get there it is just part of the job.

Complain too much and if I was your employer I would say fine keep the work car here and drive your own vehicle here and get the work car when you have a call and 5 days a week.

(and if you knew about it you should have been putting aside money for it all along or where is the money you are saving not having to pay for gas? your poor planning isn't their fault)

i am sorry but if he is on call 24/7 he should not be paying anything..cops here have to take home their cars and they do not pay anything extra...he also does not get to use it when he is not working so he does not get much perk for over 700.00

It's the commute part that he's paying the taxes on, since that's not company use. I know when I'd go out to visit clients at locations, I wouldn't write off the mileage for the first stop, or that last stop coming home since that was part of my commute time.

He gets to commute without putting wear and tear on a personal vehicle. That's the portion of the use of the vehicle that is taxable.

She and I don't like our money messed with, especially that much.
Like I said I don't mind paying what is right, not ranting on that, just the Blind Side.

I am guessing that the taxpayers feel the same way. Be grateful for the free ride you have had for three years.

What pray tell does the distance he lives from work have to do with anything?

He is getting free transportation to and from work and contrary to your opinion most people on call do not get free transportation to work. I still say complain to much and find yourself having to leave the work vehicle at work and going there first when there is a call.

Give the poor guy a break. He is venting about so much money coming out of his check. I drive my car to and from work and it is about 20 miles round trip. It is used for me to go work only. It runs me about $60 a month for gas. As a taxpayer (though) not in his state I couldn't care less if an employee takes their car home. Just not that important to me to even pop up on my radar.

this may have been part of the federal tax laws since 1990, but I can assure you that many, many governmental agencies (including the federal government themselves), along with private companies ignored this part of the law until recently.

Exactly, this is nothing new, just a lot of employers (and it makes no difference if they are public or private employers) did not know they had to report this as income and withhold tax. And they are kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The should have started witholding the tax in January 2010, but because the have to withhold the 2010 tax in 2010,they had to withhold it all from the last paycheck of 2010.

We had this issue come up where I was working back in 1991. The company I worked for was on top of the laws, and immediately started the withholding. HOWEVER, as many of my co-workers at the time discovered, the IRS feels it is the EMPLOYEES responsiblity to know that taking a company vehicle home is a taxable benefit, just like they expect people in tipped positions to report and pay tax on every penny in tips their receive.

Goes back further than that. Sometime back in the 60sthe Prudential Insurance Co provided free lunch. Then Uncle Sugar (Sam) decided it should be taxed, thus ended free lunches.

to be honest, I don't really know how far it goes back, as I was just quoting something another poster said. All I know is that it seems that it's been just recently that all employers are starting to get onboard with actually reporting the financial value of the perks they provide to their employees to the IRS. My guess is that they aren't doing it to be annoying, but that the government has realized that they've been letting a big source of tax dollars fall through the cracks.

Really? I used to get free lunches at work and it wasn't taxed.

I can go only by what someone who worked there at the time told me. Could it be the company absorbed and paid the tax for you ??

chances are you won't get those free lunches any more.

Where I work we must attend several full-day trainings a year. Continental breakfast and lunch were always provided...until about 2 years ago. The reason given was that they now had to attach a value to the food being provided to each person and add it to their gross income for the year. Since not everyone had the same thing to eat & people from different companies attended, it would be a record-keeping nightmare, so no more "free" food.

Thanks for all the responces. Today I found out they quite taking the tax out in 2003. :confused3 Guess they had to start all over again. I'm glad they did'nt go back 3 years on me. Meeting this morning didn't realy help any. Did find out that we are First Responders. I did find out that they knew about this problem in JUNE so why didn't they just start taking the tax out in JULY???? My boss did call the IRS that went over well. :lmao: He did talk to the man that wrote the guide lines for who should pay, and who should not pay. At first of meeting it looked like we should not pay(First Responders) at all but as the day went by it looked like we should pay. Not over yet I won't find out anything for sure till next week.
Its only $3.00 a day. They wanted 0.50 a mile that would have been $9.00 a day for me.
I do get called out on average 1, to 2 times a month. And I don't mine going out on calls its my job. (i knew that when i took the job)My wife does not like it. Oh well it will all work out in the end. Good night everyone. And thanks again.

It was a state agency (I worked in the cafeteria of a campus dorm and we got free meals during our shift). I'd be really surprised if they paid any more tax than they had to. ;) But this was a looooong time ago, so perhaps things have changed and the free meals are no more.
