Just got home from a week at POR

Hi all:

Just wanted to send some quick thoughts about staying at POR. We had 3 rooms, with one for us (DS5, DD2, DH and I), a connecting for MIL, and my parents in a 3rd room. They had us originally blocked off for 3 rooms in a row (2 connecting, a 3rd next to that) in AB 15 but I declined (big mistake--I think I should have kept that) because I didn't think my mom would want the rustic look of AB and would prefer the mansions. In fact, I had requested at the time of reserv. and also faxed our prefer. for the mansions (Magnolia Bend/Terrace). But they didn't have avail. there. They did "upgrade us" to a river view (no charge) at Parterre Place, rooms 19582, 19581, and 19579 (mom and dad checked in a day later and were separated by one room from us).

First floor at Parterre is not, however, a river view. It's on the river, with a nice view of greenery and shrubs. Just FYI. Grounds were magnificently kept up and buses ran pretty frequently to the parks; had just one day at MK when we had to wait almost 20 min. for a bus back to POR. Otherwise transport was nice. We had a bit of a walk to the main depot at POR but we didn't mind.

I have just 3 "negatives" for those who are interested. I was not entirely pleased with Mousekeeping. I left very generous tips every day. I don't think that any bathroom at any hotel at WDW should have black mildew/mold growing on the shower tile. I started to really notice this by day 3 of the trip. Anyone interested, I took pictures just to remind myself I wasn't crazy. Really.

Also, my mom said they did not replace dirty glasses in the room until she started putting them in the SINK. They also missed a lot when it camed to cleaning the bathroom. MIL was equally not pleased with their bare minimum "towel/sheet changes." It just wasn't that clean, and I can live with some dust, etc, but you just felt like no one really made much effort. I never heard a vacuum while I was there. Or smelled bleach after a room was cleaned.

Generally, there was also not a lot of straightening up or basic cleaning. I don't expect anyone to clean up my stuff but at regular hotels, I have seen better as far as just straightening up goes. I was underwhelmed.

Had I not gotten extremely ill during the latter part of my trip, I would have gone to management to complain. I'm pretty easygoing, too.

Second thing: the people who checked us in were great but other than that, POR guest relations staff was just OK. We had to go there with a few different yet not complicated questions, and let's just say there wasn't a really positive, let me try to help you kind of attitude from any one of their CMs. On one occasion, not even "can I help you." Just a stare from one CM till I finally said, "Hope you can help me..." At which point she reluctantly answered my question. Again, I might expect this from a lesser hotel but not anywhere on Disney property. If I wanted other than a magical experience, I could have rented off property and spent a lot less.

Third: the food court was not a very pleasant experience. Again, I understand that there are lots of people coming through everyday and I did see staff clearing tables, wiping, etc. Still, it's very sticky in there everywhere you sit and the service is very slow. I would not go there unless it's a necessity or at late hours when crowds are down.

I'm not sure if the masses from spring break just wore out the staff in the past few weeks--the resort was not at all crowded this past week. But we just didn't get that warm fuzzy feeling from this resort (elsewhere in the parks CMs were great). I'm not sure if I liked POR enough to recommend it--maybe I'd try much harder to stay at AB instead if I do go back there.

We'll be staying at POR (mansions) for the first time in about 4 weeks! I'm curious, not just at POR , but at any WDW resort: if your room seems "not clean"--even if it's not a big, obvious thing like a filthy toilet or something--can you complain and get it re-cleaned? Or is it best just to ask for another room? I know all the POR guestrooms have been rehabb'd by now...maybe they didn't get to the bathrooms? Mold is not good.
Anyway, I'm sorry you had such an unpleasant experience! I know when you get sick on vacation, it makes it even worse. (Last year at WDW, both DS9 and I got sinus infections and were dra-a-a-ging around the parks until we finally went to CentraCare for anti-biotics....we had lousy weather, too!)

I'm curious, why do you think it would have been better at AB???

Thanks for taking the time to fill us in!

I stayed at the GF and experienced the same disappointments. In fact, when we checked in and went to our room it was clear that the room hadn't been cleaned. Opened food laying around, pieces of clothing, etc. Went back and told them, they didn't really seem to care but gave me another room. This room was ok but I expected it too be much cleaner. The food court, or snack bar whatever it is called, was always messy. Even my husband made a comment about it. Staying at the GF was a big disappointment for us and I most likely will not stay there again. A lot of money for a lot of nothing.

We have stayed at POR several times now. We have found that mousekeeping isn't perfect. I don't think I've stayed in any resort that didn't have a mold issue. Must be the humidity down there. But, you would think they would make more effort. I would almost rather not have mousekeeping come in every day. I don't miss it a bit when we stay DVC.

As far as the food court goes, we found that we were much better off if we went at off hours. We would eat around 7 in the morning. We did find it to be messy a lot of the time tho. But, in their defense, I saw some pretty incredible behavior on the part of guests. One example...a teen spilled the soda at the refill station...his mother looked at him and said "Don't worry about that. Someone will get it. Let's get going, we'll be late." Understand that the soda had run down the counter, over onto the floor. There is no way that the CMs can keep up with the mess, especially in cases like that. I've seen people just leave their trash on the tables, drop stuff on the floor and leave it there. Incredible. I actually found the food court at AllStarMu to be neater.

But, I'm sorry you didn't have a better stay at POR. This is one of our favorite resorts and it makes me sad to hear that others haven't had a good experience there.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. We went there last May and absolutely loved everything about POR! We never went to the food court though. Besides the bus service (which took forever), we had a great time and would stay there again in a heartbeat.

We stayed in AB15 and my parents had to stay 1 night in the mansions (Magnolia Terrace), and having seen both, AB15 is MUCH nicer, cleaner, and fresher than Magnolia Terrace (IMHO). AB15 reno, from what I was told, was completed just a month ago. Our mousekeeper in AB15 was so nice and did a great job cleaning after us and giving us fresh supplies of glasses/cups/extra towels/etc. daily. My DD9 even told me that the "mansions look pretty on the outside, but our room [AB15] is so much nicer".

I agree with the OP about the food court. We went during Easter break, and it was obvious that the CMs had a hard time keeping up with the guests in the tidying up. We did find that if we went during the off-hours, we were much better off.

I'm sorry to hear the OP had a negative experience at POR. It's a shame to hear that, esp. since we all pay such a lot of $$$ to stay onsite.

Staying there the end of this month. We've never stayed in AB section, and are considering requesting it. What section were you in?

I guess I felt that many people on this board have expressed positive experiences at AB, so perhaos I should have heeded their advice and chosen that part of POR instead, when I was told Magnolia was not an option. We would have been closer to the bus stop had we gone with the AB rooms they originally wanted to assign us, too. I just really wanted to try out the mansions since I am originally from New Orleans and thought it would be fun for our family. Maybe the section of Parterre Place we got was not ideal.

ITA about goofy4tink's point that people at the food court do some outrageously gross things. And that puts the staff at a major disadv. They have enough to deal with. I think it's just sheer volumes of people coming in and out with food everywhere all the time.

The one mousekeeper who did stop by our room when I was in bed with a fever that one day was totally apologetic and left me a ton of new towels and was beside herself sorry to have opened the door while I was sleeping (DH forgot to put out the privacy sign in his hurry to get to the parks--nice, huh).

It dismays me to hear that nosebuddy had a similar experience at GF! My mom kept saying...maybe we'll go deluxe next time. And we are not hotel snobs-it kills us to pay $$$ for a hotel room we are rarely in during the day. I'm just not sure why WDW wouldn't go above and beyond to keep their rooms in top notch shape all of the time, no matter where you stay or what you pay. We loved, loved, loved the idea of being on property because it was so convenient, and I nearly keeled over when my overly thrifty MIL said she could not imagine staying off property because it would "take out all the Disney" experience of it all (this is a woman who can't bear to throw out the last bit of an Itzakadoozie that has melted all over my child, because it was "so expensive.") I still think it's a pretty place to stay--seems it's just terribly inconsistent.

I do think the mousekeeping can be a problem at any resort level. There used to be a fair number of complaints on these boards about mold, weird odors and other problems at the Polynesian...don't hear as many instances as before. I, too, was surprised about the GF. We've always stayed at WL and while mousekeeping has never been "bad", I know what you mean about "could have been cleaner". I've also read about other people having spotless, immaculate rooms at Pop Century. So, it seems that resort catagory doesn't matter as much as luck of the draw.
Did your room at Parterre Place not seem renovated? I 'd read they'd just redone all of that section before starting at AB...less than 6 months ago, I think.

Thanks,

Karla-

Not certain about whether our section of Parterre Place had been updated. From the scuffing of paint on the walls, it didn't look particularly shiny and new to me. That doesn't mean updating had not taken place within the last few months, though. I take partial responsibility since I asked for a refurbished room, they offered me AB15 originally (which evidently has been recently updated), and I was the one who asked for a change to the mansions. Of course, who anticipated the variance I would find?

:earsgirl: One positive thing I wanted to mention about POR's food court--on the day I got really sick, the kitchen staff there went out of their way to fix me some chicken soup (at my panicked mother's request--yes I am over 35 yo w/ 2 kids...) with vegetables and chicken--this was NOT from a can. They called a manager out to speak to my mom and get our exact request. That was really nice.

I definitely agree with you on the mousekeeping. Two years ago we stayed in por and there was mold in the shower head so I complained and they moved us to a cleaner room. We did go back last year and it was better

Wow we were just there for Spring Break and it was wonderful! I didn't have one single complaint in the 6 nights we were there, bell hop staff even went out of their way to get my 7 yr old to stop crying when we were going to leave. Her brother got to ride up front when they took us and our baggage to the room and she didn't. That plus she was sleepy and we were leaving she burst into tears so a sweet bell hop girl who overheard her took her for a spin around the parking lot and even let her "steer" a bit. Our Mousekeeper left a sweet towel and animal arrangements every night even though we didn't tip her til the day before we left. The food at Boatwrights was sooo good, especially the Blueprint Omlette and we never even had to wait for a table, ps or not. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, I love that place :(

Not to get OT but mold in FL is a common problem. I guess it is from the humidity. I know people who live in brand new houses that are spotless and they still complain about mold in the bathrooms. So far I haven't had that problem in my home but keeping my fingers crossed. I have to say though I have been in many bathroom around here that have mold. my bathrooms all have windows in them that I keep open a lot-maybe that has something to do with me being moldless. :confused3

Is the mold something I could just bring some household mold and mildew cleaner for? We will be at POR June 10-17 and really don't think I will feel clean showering in a filthy shower.

I am sure that a good bottle of Clorox spray bleach would solve the mold on the tile problem. But I do find it troublesome that it was like this on a "light" crowd week at the resort (not that it should be a problem at all).

Oh, and one other thing I forgot about--after my parents checked in, there was a huge rainstorm. The CM who checked them in gave them no direction on how to get to Parterre Place and told them they could "just walk" with their luggage--didn't even offer to get bell service for them. They had no idea that bell service could take them by golf cart to their room--no one told them anything. They wandered around lost until they happened upon our building, drenched. Nice.
