Just got called regarding Holiday 2006 suites

LOL! That's a perfect phrase to describe it. My fellow fellas and I refer to it as "ratcheting" - the process by which our wives get us to agree to something small then, in small steps and through the use of "chick justification math" turn that something small into something much larger.

I suppose we have chick justification logic too. For example, my wife suggests that because she's a stay-at-home-mom and I have a career, I have a "thing" and she doesn't, ergo I should give up our home theater room so she can have a craft room - something that's uniquely hers.

Translation: The home theater is going to become a craft room. I just have to come to terms with it.

Ladies, thanks for justifying "chick" math (I love that phrase). Guys, you'll be happy to know, that my husband wasn't buying any of it. I think he's a little worried about being on the ship for 10 nights also. It was a big thing just getting him on for 3 nights and this January, we're graduating all the way up to a 4 night.

I'm kind of disappointed with the Disney schedule though and I don't quite understand it. I checked on the cruise after the 10 night Christmas cruise, figuring that it would be 7 nights. That would run from 12/26/06 and come back into port on Tuesday 1/2/07. I think that's pretty close to what they're doing this year, followed by a special 4 night cruise to get them back into sync. Well, for some reason they are doing a 4 night after the 10 night, so 12/26/06-12/30/06, then a 7 night western for New Years. Our only option is either the 10 or 4 night because of school vacation and oldest DD's college schedule. I was so excited, but I don't think it's going to work for us :(

Well, the dream was fun while it lasted, but it's definitely looking like this is a no go for us. I think I'll have to go over the schedule for next year and see if we can fit in a Western cruise at some point.

My husband does "manly-man justification math"--when I want something--I can never figure it out--but boy oh boy can we afford computer gadgets, tv gadgets, movies mysteriously showing up on our doorstep from amazon.com. Can I sign up for this "c.j.m." class?

Oh, and Sam--if you are losing your home theater room, my husband will be glad to take it off of your hands :hyper: . He'll come up with the $$$, he always does.

You know, I didn't think it was sticker shock--for a holiday cruise--in a suite--I had in my head a $20K figure before I saw OP post on the $16K price tag-- go for it if you've got the dough. But if your previous postings on your last cruise hold any fortune telling value--don't forget to budget for your younger DD's new wardrobe she'll require for a tropical holiday :teeth: . Enjoy the cruise--I hope you get to go!

I think a 4 day to run over New Year's Eve would be a lot of fun. The holiday time frame is out of my budget range, but I would love to celebrate New Years onboard.

I don't think they are doing a 4 night New Years eve sailing, although that would be a great option. For 2004, they have the 10 night Christmas cruise which comes back in on the 28th, followed by a 7 night, which includes New Years and then the special 4 night is Tuesday to Saturday so that the Magic can get back into sync with the Saturday to Saturday sailings. My DH and I are booked on that 4 night and it was actually less than the 3 night, no chick math involved, the grand total was honestly less money for the additional night :)

In 2006, they are again going to do the 10 night Christmas cruise, followed by 4 nights, which won't include any holidays and then a 7 night New Years eve cruise. I just think it's strange the way they scheduled it. Especially when you look at the 2006 calendar and see that Christmas is on a Monday and New Years eve is on a Sunday, so they didn't have to fiddle with the 7 night cruises at all. That might have made it more affordable for everyone and it wouldn't interfere with any school vacations.

FWIW, I started with a 4 night cruise and, for various reasons I won't get into, I didn't really enjoy it. My 2nd cruise was a 7 day at my wife's urging to try it one more time.

I'm hooked. The 7 day cruise - because of the length - was the most relaxing vacation I've ever had for a couple reasons: it was long enough for me to do a lot without feeling rushed (I felt rushed during the 4 day) and still be able to sleep in, and I was disconnected from work - no phone and no Internet. My job has high demands and I work hard at it, but my focus that whole week was on my wife and I felt like I fell in love with her all over again. That particular cruise was the 2/28/04 Western, and my marriage is still reaping the benefits.

A 10 day holiday cruise would be that much better. Especially for my wife since Christmas is her favorite time of year.

Chick math or not - if $16k is in your reach - show this post to your husband.

Sam, tell your wife that the women on the board think she should give you an extra kiss tonight. :D

I wish. :( She and the boys are visiting my mother-in-law this week. I have to stay behind and work due to lack of vacation.

But I can at least dream about that last cruise and my next cruise while hanging out on the DIS, right? :D

Hoo boy - my wife says I'm the same way. She always says to me "if you want it bad enough, you find a way to make it happen." She put me on a budget effective 10/1 - and then I spent 1/2 my monthly allowance on 10/2.

Sometimes when she wants something really bad and I tell her no, she says to me, "I want this very badly, so you figure out a way to make it happen because you're good at that."

Thing is, electronics are a basic necessity. Shoes aren't. I go barefoot all the time! ;)

Tammi, what about the same time frame, but on a different line that does a Western Itinerary? JAT

I can't tell from your post if it's not being able to do a holiday cruise or not being able to do a Disney holiday cruise that's disappointing you. But for your budget, you could still get a really nice suite on a really nice line during the same time of year.

And tell your DH, I agree with Sam. ::yes:: He can have one of the most relaxing vacations of his life on a 7-night cruise.

Oh no! We were all going to live vicariously through you in your cat 1!

Can you put a deposit down ion it now and then see how your husband feels after the 4 day in January? Maybe he'll still be feeling that DCL afterglow and will tell you that he's hooked.

We did a 10 day cruise for our honeymoon, and it was absolutely glorious. I've never been so relaxed or had so much fun in my life; it was one of the few times that i was able to step away from the real world, forget about work, and really enjoy myself.

I completely agree. Cruises have been the only way I've found to completely disconnect and relax.

Marcy, the $16,000 wasn't even for a category 1, it's a category 3. I can only imagine that those suites are closer to $25,000 for 10 nights.

I'd have to put down $3500 by next week in order to hold the reservation, so I'm still thinking on it. It's funny, I brought the kids into the conversation and my DS was shocked that I was even considering not being home for Christmas. I was a bit surprised by his response, especially since he's 14 and not a little kid anymore. I guess there is something to being home for the holidays.

What I'll probably end up doing is waiting to see how DH enjoys the 4 night cruise this January. He thinks that we're only doing the 3 night, so it will be a surprise to him. If he likes it, then I'll see about the 7 night Western New Years eve cruise for 2006/2007. That's my birthday too, so it will be extra special. Hopefully the kids won't be too disappointed that we'll be missing out on our New Years tradition of doing Boston's first night though. Jeesh, I think I liked them better when they were little and didn't have an opinion :teeth:

Yes, there is something special about being home for the holidays. Last year, we went to WDW and we drove home Christmas day (very nice on the highways that day) so we could spend Christmas with my sister the next day. It was fun being at WDW with all the decorations, but I was sad about not being home for Christmas Eve.

This year we are going on the Wonder from Dec. 19-23, but we are flying this time and will get home the evening of the 23rd, so we will be home for Christmas Eve and Christmas.

Next year, I want to just stay home for Christmas. There is just something about being 'home' on Christmas Eve.

Oops, sorry!

And wow . . . no wonder allears was so excited when he was upgraded from a cat 4 to a 3 on the Magic!

Tooty Jane:

Have you heard anything yet? What back to backs are you wanting? Christmas, 2006 and following, or preceding weeks? In a Cat. 2? That'd be fabulous!!!

Still waiting myself

We went on our honeymoon for Christmas -- 7day Eastern 2001. It was a wonderful and magical way to spend the holiday. I would do it again in an heartbeat, but it's harder convincing hubby to be away for the holiday.

Plus now we have two beautiful greyhounds and would feel sad leaving them for Christmas.

Well, knowing that Disney would not call me I've been calling daily. Finally, I got a "cooperative" CM and she was very helpful. It seems as though all the suites have been booked through November and we were not even considered for the Cat. 2 -- most likely because we wanted it for the back-to-back cruises. I gave Inventory Control any dates from mid-June to mid-August 2006. Soooo, we're on the waiting list. However, as I told the CM, chances are pretty slim that a Cat. 2 will become available for two weeks in a row :( Any pixie dust thrown our way would be much appreciated! We were hoping to do the back-to-back since oldest ds graduates from high school in June 2006 and we probably won't be able to vacation as in the past -- things change once they go off to college!! I guess we'll start thinking of something else to do, probably on another cruise line  maybe even the Greek Islands or a European cruise. We've cruised with Princess before and loved it so I guess I'll check out what they have.

Oh Lisa!

That's such a bummer! Mucho pixie dust sent your way. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

We have done a Greek/Mediteranean cruise and it truly was wonderful! Ephesus in Turkey was by far my most favorite place in the whole wide world. So much history, you could just "see" the chariots riding through the streets. Now mind you, my dd was 1 when we took her, so she probably didn't appreciate that trip to it's fullest! Sounds like your kids would be old enough to have a sense of appreciation of an 'old world' cruise.

Pixie dust for whatever decision you make!!! :thewave:

You know, some things just aren't meant to be and I just had a sneaking suspicion that this was one of them. Yes, our three boys will be 18, 15 and 11 and if they decided to not be "typical teens" (i,e, be seen with their parents!!) they should be able to appreciate a trip such as this. We've been to the Caribbean three times now and a change of scenery might be good. The only problem is if we decide to go on another cruise line the other cruise boards just don't handle a candle to the DIS!!! Thanks for your kind thoughts and all the pixie dust!!
