We were on the Magic last week for the western cruise. After over a year of planning, I can't believe it is over! :( But I wanted to share what I think might help all you lucky people who are yet to go on your cruise.

A big THANK YOU to everyone on this board that provided such invaluable help to us over the last year, I felt like I was the most informed traveler on the ship! We didn't miss anything!

Okay, here goes. First of all, regarding what to pack. We did not use the over the door shoe holder, there were plenty of little shelves in the bathrooms for our stuff. We also did not use the walkie talkies, our son knew we would be at the adult pool just about all the time. We also brought coffee mugs, but never used them, the styrofoam cups provided were fine. As for things we did use and were glad to have were bathroom hooks, roll of quarters, dryer sheets, thank you notes, phone cards, ziplok bags, trash bags and water wallets.

If you rent a car, have one person drop everyone else in your party at the ship with all the luggage, then return the car and take the shuttle alone back to the ship. No handling luggage and if you leave your docs with the person at the terminal, they can check you in. We did this and when I got back from Avis all I had to do was go to the front of the line (which was very long by this time) and get my KTTW card. DH and DS were already in line to board, pretty close to the front of the line.

Do not miss Brunch at Palo, it is incredible.

We did not do a lot of excursions, we enjoyed the pool when everyone else got off the ship while we were in port. We did do the Dolphin Encounter, this was awesome, try not to miss this. It does book within a week of when you can start to book excursions, 60 days prior to your cruise.

At Cozumel, the duty free store at the end of the pier, the one for cruise ship passengers only, had the best prices for vanilla that I saw. Try to go see Sally's place for golf, it is really great. Also, try to get off the ship after dinner in Cozumel and see the ship all lit up at night. It was the only port we stayed in after dark.

On Wednesday, you can get the first five minutes free for internet access between 8AM and 5PM. Check at Guest Services first to be sure, they do not publish this in the Navigators.

We brought a cooler on board with soda, wine and wine coolers. Saved us a lot of money on extra drinks.

The Late Night Dessert buffet was on Thursday night, it was not well advertised. It started at 11:15PM.

Get off the ship as soon as possible at Castaway Cay, and walk all the way to the far side of the Family Beach. That area fills up last.

Pay for your tips on Thursday, avoid all the lines on Friday.

Don't miss the Till We Meet Again show in the atrium on Friday night. Get there very early and park yourself in the little balcony between the elevators on the 4th deck over the atrium to get the best pictures of the characters on the stairs.

I know I will think of more later, I will just add to this thread as I remember things!!

Thanks decolady. I enjoyed reading your report. We will be sailing in a month on the Western! I know how fast it goes. I plan to enjoy every minute.

One question, was your cooler one of the soft ones on wheels? That is what we plan to bring.

:)

Sounds great! Glad you had a good time, but sorry its over. ;)
I have quite a wile until my next Disney cruise, but Im taking in all these tips. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. We still have many months to go until we are back on board so it is nice to live it again through others.

I have one question about the check-in. When we took the AVis shuttle in the past they asked for our cruise documents. If DH is taking the car back then getting on the shuttle what does he show if I have his documents?

I'm glad you had a good time. Were you able to take pictures with the characters or get autographs at the Till We Meet Again show?

Mary -

When I rode the Avis shuttle in December back to the port (DH stayed with the kids and checked us in), they only asked for a picture ID. They checked these against the sailing list to make sure that everyone entering the DCL port area was actually sailing on that cruise. So just make sure your husband has his driver's license with him when he takes the car back. He will also need to show this at the front desk to pick up his KTTW card when he rejoins you in the terminal.

I can answer that....most definately can you get autographs and photos with all the individual characters and performers.

First they announce all the performers and characters and you watch them come down the stairs in the atrium. Then they have about 20 minutes of interaction with the guests. The characters and performers are spread out all through the atrium and you just stand in line to get what ever autograph or photo you want. Then they all line up the on the stairs and pose for a large group photo. They turn to every side of the atrium so everyone all around can get a great shot!!!

It really is a wonderful event.

Thanks for the reminder about the 4th deck over the atrium as a best seat in the house for this show. You are right & I remember people standing there.

Also, after the show, they threw "Pixie Dust" and I used a film container so my DD (6) could save some. May be one of the benefits of being "on the floor" at the end.

I can't remember why we missed this on the Magic in October. Do you know what time this usually is scheduled?

It's late (at least for us), I think 10:15PM on Friday night. My kids were sound asleep by then.

Hi Decolady - I was standing next to you on the 4th floor balcony!

I missed the show last time we cruised because we were still in the restaurant. I am pretty sure that it is now on at a later time than it used to be - it's now at 10:15.

I absolutely loved ther "pixie dust" at the end, and got some off the floor after I finished taking pictures (tucked in my with my KTTW card).

The only sad thing was the children I saw crying at the end because the characters had said goodbye and they knew they wouldn't see them again. I broke my heart (I wanted to cry too!). I think that would be the perfect time to pull out the pillowcase with all the signatures on it.

Okay, I will try to answer all your questions now.

CB4U - We had a soft-sided cooler that we carried, it did not have wheels. Security just asked what was in it and let it through.

WDWLVR - DCL security asked to see my Driver's License and checked the roster before letting me into the terminal, but Avis did not ask to see anything. I just jumped on the shuttle and jumped off at the terminal. They drop you off under a white tent across the street from the terminal. That is where they pick you up at the end of the cruise too.

bkline - You could get photos and autographs if you were down in the atrium on the 3rd deck. My DS was nowhere to be found (he is older) so I just stood in my great photo spot and waited till they all went back up on the stairs for my photos. When they did, a lot of people realized what a good spot that was and tried to get up there, but there was not a lot of time. One person should be up on the 4th deck with a camera during the autograph session.

I scooped up some of the "pixie dust" myself to save!

This show was at 10:15 on Friday. I was in my spot by 9:55.

Glad to hear from you, mbaidacoff. Don't you wish we were still on board? It is hard to come back to reality!!

Here are a couple more things I have thought of:

Use tiny cable ties to lock your luggage. They are more secure than those little padlocks. Just be sure to pack a nail clipper or little scissor in an unlocked pocket to open them!

Be sure to bring magnetic decorations for your stateroom door! We did this for our DS's birthday, and everyone walking by said things like "Why didn't we think of that?". It made it so easy to find your stateroom! I went to Home Depot and got the Disney paint ships, shaped like Mickey, and stuck magnets to the back of them and hung ribbons from them.

I also have two questions:

Why does DCL serve "Butterine" instead of real Butter? And who is Bill W. and why are his friends in a meeting every day on Deck 2?

And who is Bill W. and why are his friends in a meeting every day on Deck 2?

That is the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. You will usually see it on almost every cruise ship, almost every day.

I thought the beverage selection was pretty rotten at that meeting. Now I know why.

Regarding butterine, it may because there are so many kids on the ship. So few kids eat butter at home these days, they are used to the taste of margerine and don't like the taste of butter.
I ran into this this weekend, at our Little League Pancake Breakfast. A local dairy distributor donated milk, chocolate milk, and butter. A lot of kids were upset there wasn't any margarine.

Thanks for asking that question! I have been on the Magic twice and could never figure out what that was!

I was wondering the same thing. I have heard it other places, too, and didn't know what it was. I thought it was some sort of poetry or fan club. How did it get that name...was BIll W. actually a person or something?

The first time I saw it in the Navigator I thought he was someone important at Disney with a lot of friends on board! ;)
