We were at the resort from Jan 23-26, both celebrating our birthdays. My 24-year-old daughter (not his mom!) joined us for some park time and meals, which is easy because she lives in Irvine and works at the resort. It was handy having someone pick us up and take us back to the airport, and I LOVED having here with us.

I had forgotten how moody teenage boys can be, where they're skipping around like little kids one minute and sullenly refusing to act interested in anything the next. I wasn't too surprised that he preferred sleeping in to doing early entry. I guess my son (his dad) was a little like that when he was around 17, but he was my kid and he had to like it or lump it. I was on slipperier ground with a grandkid and not sure how to handle it. I just told him I would be in the park for my early entry time and he could come with me, text me, or see me later in the morning. He never chose to go with, but he would be up at weird hours in the night playing games on his phone. His eating habits were atrocious but my son and DIL said that's how he eats (UGH!!!!) and it was ok. He literally ate fried chicken strips, french fries, fried mozzarella and a milkshake or soda for EVERY meal. That is not doing him any favors. I think because his parents work really hard and are gone from before he wakes up until they get home from work at 5-6 and sometimes later, they've let him live on fast food and play video games, which is not my parenting style so it's hard to watch.

But we also had a BLAST!! He's a super fun kid when he forgets he's a teen, and I always forget I'm an old lady so that works out :D

The main thing he had wanted to do was build a light saber, and WOWZA, that was a HUGE HIT with him!!! He was on cloud 9 for quite a long time. He loved telling anyone who would listen about his light saber, and the next day he wanted to go buy some crystals for it. He was exuberant that he got a black one instead of a red one, whatever that means. I am not a SW person but that light saber workshop was awesome, and the PP photographer took some cool pics.

We had a beautiful room in GCH, room 2205. We could just walk up the lovely Craftsman wood stairs from the lobby to our floor and we were just past the lobby area. I don't care about the view, I like a good location and that one was fantastic! It was larger than many and had 2 Qs, a pull-out sofa, and a pull-out chair. It was above the entry area and you could see DLH etc in the distance. The desk clerk told me we could wait for a better grade room (I think we had a woods/ctyd room because my daughter booked it with her CM discount) but 2205 was perfect.

All of the service was impeccable. My grandson was totally wowed by the hotel and though we didn't use the pool (the weather was chilly and sometimes it rained!), we did sit at the Craftsman outdoor dining place a couple of times and loved it. We had pizza there one night (really good IMO) and I was super happy that there was a duo playing a lot of Beatles tunes and the like. I can always tell when a place is geared to Boomers, ha ha.

I couldn't believe how much stuff I knocked out solo during the EE times! I discovered I really like going in by myself :) My DD bought me a darling backpack purse for my birthday and a beautiful bracelet (Crislu?). I don't have time to post pics right now but wanted to get this typed out. I'll add pics soon!

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions!

So here are some pics. You'll have to forgive the poor quality. I hate to take pictures and am not very good about it. Also not very good AT it!

My purse and bracelet: I'll be back with pics when I get them off my phone. They don't want to load from my phone so I'm going to have to send them to my computer.

I am leaving Thursday for a trip with three 18 to 20 year old grandkids. I am a little nervous about it as I have not been with kids this age. I fully expect them to sleep in and not make rope drop then staying until midnight. I am definitely a rope drop person so this will be a new experience for me. But what I am most worried about is the food. They all have different tastes and are very picky. We will see how it goes.

Oh, best of luck to you!! I'll bet you have tons of fun. I imagine it might be easier (though not cheaper! ) to have siblings along so they can do their own thing sometimes. I know you'll have a wonderful trip and I can't wait to hear about it!

Wow, it sounds like a wonderful trip! I totally relate to the teen stuff lol. One of my favorite things about Disneyland is it makes my kids act like kids again. Yes- the food! My 14yo would live on pizza if given the choice.

Thanks for sharing the pictures! I have a backpack in that style, it has little Sleeping Beauty castles all over it. Such a great size. The bracelet is adorable!

I'm so glad your grandson had fun and that the light saber was a hit :)

Any favorite meals, experiences or rides this time around?

I am super glad you ventured off without him because a) solo mornings in the park are soooo good for the soul and b) it showed him that the world doesn't stop for him and he can choose to miss out on things but then he...misses out on things!
With my daughter being 14 I very much can relate to a bit of this. It can be frustrating but as long as we keep showing these little humans that we can have fun, hopefully at some point they will take cue and follow along!

You location sounds great at the Grand, your trip sounds fun! I love your bracelet :lovestruc

I have been thinking of you all week while I am in Boston/NYC, wondering how it was going. Your report took me right back to my son when he was that age....geez, dont know if it's the hormones or what but man, can they be moody! It all passed by the time he went off to college...now he is a neuroscientist with a PhD from Notre Dame ! Never in my wildest dreams would I have seen that coming after all those angsty teen years.

So happy you got to share the time with him, especially a memory like making his light saber...that is a "core" memory for sure that he will cherish forever (even if he forgets to tell you how much it meant).

Glad you enjoyed YOUR time on the trip and made some more great Disney memories! Now...are you planning your next trip yet? 😊

BTW....LOVE the backpack! So cute.

I am so happy you had a nice time on the trip. Those memories can be priceless for both of you.

You're right, teens can be a handful at times. I began hauling my four grandkids to DLR when they were 6 years old.

They learned pretty quick that there would be early mornings for early entry. By the fifth morning they were pretty spent. Some of my favorite photos are from the last day of a trip.

In 2013 I took my DIL and four grand kids (DGD's-9 & 15 and DGS's 11 & 19) by the fifth day the boys were yawning pretty much the whole morning.

Here is a pic of the two of them in line for Matter's on our fifth morning.
Don't they look ecstatic to be at Disney!
