ok my fellow WDW vets have told me how superior the WDW parks are to DL and that I would be very disappointed in the trip. I heard it 100 times, and they were very wrong!! There were differences obviously but not in the parks, I will review:

I love the close proximity of the 3 DL parks. It was so much better to walk across the gateway then to get on a bus for 30 minutes to park hop. Score 1 for DL. The rides were either better or the same in DL then in WDW, however with 4 parks at WDW you get more rides, so that was a draw. The fireworks show was better in DL, by far. Score 2 for DL. The park setup was better at DL, less walking involved score 3 for DL.

Now the bad...The CM at DL were awful. I mean just plain terrible. I went to go on the Indiana Jones ride with my son, who at just about 5 years old wants to be Indiana Jones more than anything. He waited for months for this ride and when we get to the front of the line, the CM says he is too small. I know the height requirement is 48", but when you have the measuring pole on a hill it makes it a bit taller. He is just 48" and the cast member would not let him on. When I say he had hairs above the line, he was that close. The CM then became rude about it, actually yelling at me in front of my kids, telling me I'm going to get the ride closed, why would I bring my son to the ride etc... He actually followed me from the booth at the front of the line back to the walkway berating me. It was sad to see. Then during the fireworks show we were herded around the Main St area by CM's as we were exiting. We would walk 5 feet and one CM would scream at us to "stay to the left" then walk another 5 feet and a different CM would scream at us to get to the right. They were inconsistent and yelling at the guests like it was our fault. And finally we hopped for 3 days from park to park. Every time we left a park we would get our hand stamped, and then re-enter the other park and show our hand stamp and ticket. The CM at the gate never looked at our hand stamps for 3 days. My left hand was lime green from the stamping, yet they CM only cared about seeing our tickets. On day #4 I forgot to get my hand stamped and wouldn't you know it, that was the day I got the CM who appeared to be the hand stamp worshiper. He was not going to let me in!!! I had a valid ticket, the 4 other people in my family had tickets and he was adamant on not letting me in. He was even accusing me of using stolen tickets!! I finally said to him "it's only 11am, just say I just got here from my hotel, I would be entering with just a ticket and no hand stamp right? " He said yes, so then I said, "ok we just got here". He looked at me and let me in. In WDW none of that would have ever happened.
Second was our dinner in Blue Bayou. I was so excited to eat there after hearing how good the food was and boy was I let down. The crab cakes my wife got were still frozen when she first got them!! Still think they are made fresh??? Then in the dimly lit room my kids were complaining about the grapes of all things. My wife looks at them good under the candle light and realizes they have mold on them!!! White fuzzy mold. The waiter just shrugged his head and brought us new grapes. Nothing was done with our bill, which was very high. the food at Carnation Cafe was great, and we were seated in seconds. The food at Rancho Del Zocalo was better then I thought it could be and the food at The warf was also good. Food advantage still goes to WDW.

I was not impressed with the amount of rides that were closed, Star Tours, Astro Blasters, Peter Pan and the Thunder Ranch were all closed. The canoes only run on weekends and the pirate ship only runs on weekends. No fireworks 7 days a week was also tough.

Overall I loved the trip. I would love 5 minutes in an alley with the Cm from Indiana Jones more, but the trip was still great. The flight from NY to Fl is much easier and cheaper then to CA so it will be a while til I return but I would not hesitate a second to go back to DL.

Sounds like you were prepared for the differences & went into the trip with a positive attitude.....glad you found things you liked there!!!

The measuring poles......my daughter had just reached the 40" mark & would get measured 2-3 times before being allowed to load...so I know the frustration when they just don't stand straight enough to pass. As for the CM..... that's awful, you should have filed a complaint at City Hall. Guest services can't fix those types of issues unless they know about them....I sure would have. What a shame he went on & on when you had kids there.....

We've always been very lucky with our meals at Disneyland....no real complaints in the last 3 trips we've done (and we eat pretty exclusively at the parks). I've heard very mixed reviews on Blue Bayou....our experience was heavenly & delicious, but others have had rude wait staff & not the best food..... sure wish they would have comped you something for moldy grapes......GROSS!

Unfortunately I don't think you can go anytime of year & not find some attraction down (summer would be the least)..I wish they'd announce even earlier than they do about refurbishment schedules....people tend to plan trips a whole lot earlier than they tell us about park hours & refurbs. I'd be totally bummed out to plan our trip & show up & find out that BTMRR was closed.....that's my favorite!!!

I'm glad to see you'd be back......I love Disneyland!!

As far as the moldy grapes, as someone who managed restaurants for quite some time, I would have demanded to see the manager on duty. Mold on food is unacceptable! That warrants a call to the health inspector. I would recommend contacting the Orange County Health inspectors at (714) 433-6000. This is not the first time I have heard of this and it should be addressed.

Sorry you ran into some challenges at DLR. Happy to hear you enjoyed it overall (enough to want to come back). Yay!

As for the measuring stick / Indy CM:
As I am sure you know, the location of the measuring stick is not the fault of the CM. For obvious safety reasons, the CMs are not allowed to let anyone on a ride if they do not measure up to the mark, even by a fraction of a fraction of an inch. Many have reported here that the policy for measuring is that if a slip of paper can fit between the top of a head and the bottom of the measure marker.

I understand the strong desire of a child to ride a new ride for the very first time. However, they are strict and if a child is even the slightest bit short on their marker, they are not allowed on. It is very cut and dry so the CM has no decision making involved.

Now... as for getting rude, yelling at you, and the other things you say took place between you and the CM, there is absolutely no explanation for and you should have asked for a manager. That CM behavior is not tolerated at Disneyland.

As for the hand-stamp: It is required for re-entry. It is sort of like having a driver's license. The police are not going to ask you for a license every time you get in a car to drive, but the one time you get asked, you need to have it.

The fact that you got a CM who would not let you in without it means that you got a CM who was doing his job. I know you had a valid ticket, but in reality, after you enter a park for the first time, your ticket is not valid without a hand stamp. People cheat the system ALL the time. People give tickets to others. People try to re-use tickets. They are the people you need to be angry with. It is due to them, that the procedures you encountered are in place. It would not happen at WDW because of the fingerprint system they have in place. Again, it is the system, not the CM that I would hope you would be frustrated with in your experience.

As for the food at the Blue Bayou:
I wasn't there so I can't comment, but many will agree that the BB is about the atmosphere, not the food. I happen to enjoy dining there. Sorry you had a bad experience. I LOVE Rancho del Zacalo.

Lastly...
I think ride closures go with the territory. We flew 3,000 miles to WDW only to have Country Bear Jamboree (which I have waited YEARS to experience again) closed the entire time we were there, along with other rides.

I hope you visit again and have a great experience. We love DLR.

Oh man, you definitely should have complained about that CM!! Yikes!!! I'm glad you had a great trip overall, sorry about the moldy grapes, I definitely would have asked for a manager on that one. Glad you liked Rancho, it's one of our faves, we eat there a lot! lol Good food, huge portions, what more can you ask for? :)

I hope you decide to come back to DL, it's a great place to visit and we love it!!

as far as my son not getting on the ride, I was disappointed but able to deal with it. The barrage of yelling that followed was what got me upset. If the ride calls for 48", well then my son at 48" (measured by his pediatrician) should get on. Inconsistency kills me.

The moldy grapes really shocked me. The waiter had to see that in the light of the kitchen and served it anyway. And ya know, I still tipped 20%!!

But most important was the time I spent with my family and the fun we had. River rapids was my daughters favorite and thunder mountain was my son's. We easily walked onto rides with next to no wait time at all and the heat was never really killer.

I would have gone to guest services right away and complained. I would have known the name of the CM and made sure DL knew how disappointed I was!

100% completely agree with you.

You are SOOO right. Glad to hear that you had a wonderful time and have terrific memories from your family's Disneyland Resort vacation.

I have said this a few times and always am out numbered on this but I think BB is totally overrated. It is too expensive and the food is terrible. Terrible as in , raw spinach that had someones fork marks on it, with 2 shrimp for 20-. Terrible as in over salted undercooked fish and a bill that was almost 200- for a party of 4 adults and 2 kids , with NO ALCOHOL on the bill. Seriously. Terrible as in a waitress who could have cared less if there was a problem with the food, no drinks delivered until after the meal and cold undercooked food.
Such a drag because it really is very pretty to sit under those lanterns. but the pretty falls away pretty quick when you know after your meal, a hot dog at the Coke corner sounds amazing.

I agree about BB. The ambiance is nice if you are closer to the water, which we never are because the seats by the water are for parties of 4 and we are always 6 or more.
Last time we were seated by the bathroom..gross! When we asked for a table NOT next to the bathrooms we were told it would be another 40 minute wait.

I would much rather eat at Carnation Cafe 4 times instead of one over-priced meal at BB.

I'm so sorry about the CMs on your trip. That was one thing I noticed in WDW--the CMs seemed more cheerful overall, even in the June heat! I'd like to think that they could be trained to follow policy in a respectful manner instead of being rude. :flower3:

And your story has me scared to eat at the Blue Bayou now...I wonder if it's safe to get just dessert there? The fact that they would actually serve moldy grapes (and frozen crab cakes, which admittedly isn't visually obvious) makes me wonder what other health violations may be occurring. :( My mom really wants to eat there, though, and I want (wanted?) to try the cookie boat...

Wow! I must say that I find your negative experiences disheartening. My bf and I leave for DL in 10 days to celebrate his graduation and birthday. I can't believe how horrible the CMs were to you and your family! I can't imagine how horrible your son must have felt! I hope that someone else complains about that CM because he will probably do that to someone else at another time. I understand that to some degree this CM was doing his job, but since your son met the height requirement, the least the CM could have done was checked his height again to make sure he was shorter before turning you all away.

I will have to remember what you said about the hand stamp. We will be park hopping at least 2 days during our trip, and we will be going back to our hotel for mid-day breaks every day since we are staying on site. I would hate to have to argue with the CM at the front. I heard that the stamps come off easily too, so I'm hoping we can prevent that as well.

Your BB story concerns me. My bf and I were just going to go for the cookie boat one day but now I am considering canceling our PS and just going to Gibson Girl and getting their chocolate chip cookie sundae instead. For the price you pay at that restaurant, nobody should have to worry about health code violations.

However, all of that being said, I am glad that your overall experience at DL was enjoyable. I'm sure that your son will enjoy going on Indy the next time you visit even more since he will have a bit more time to anticipate the ride and imagine how fun it will be. :)

OP I feel for you regarding how rude the CM was. I, and several other posters, have mentioned in months and years past that there is a consistency issue with the height requirement measuring things at many of the rides. I noticed this when my son was small, and many others have mentioned it as well. It's strange how this can happen, but it does. I wonder if it has anything to do with the land settling from the time they were erected to now, especially since there are earthquakes? Anyway, I know it won't make you feel better but it has happened to a lot of us over the years, and that isn't the CM's fault. All they have to go on is what that measuring thing tells them. I hear if they can slide a piece of paper in between that they won't allow the kid to pass. It's a safety issue and they err on the side of caution. The CM had no excuse for rudeness though, especially in this economy with so many people out of work, the CM should have bent over backwards to at least be nice to you while bursting your bubble about the ride.

As far as BB, I agree with you and others. The food is mediocre and overpriced. I am so glad I got to try it once for the experience, but we'll probably never pay those prices again to eat there. Maybe just dessert only. Mold on the grapes is disgusting!:scared1:

Been there as well, wanting my child to be tall enough for Indy however when ever I have tried if the cast members said no that was all I needed i never argued or questions with them for doing thier job.
At least the one cast member said no at the begining verses you getting all the way to the ride and the cast members there say no. That is horrible and i've seen it twice...

I just wanted to say that we've eaten at BB many many times. No the food isn't gourmet but you're in a theme park, I have never seen gourmet food at any theme park. In the past couple of years we've done BB probably 10 times, maybe only 8 but still that's a lot for someone who lives 6 hrs away. :) We've always been satisfied with our food, never had anything undercooked, frozen or moldy and we usually manage to finish just about everything. And the best dessert, the cookie boat!!!! LOVE that thing!!!!

I encourage everyone to try it, if you hate it talk to the manager and let them know why but at least give it a shot. :)

As far as the crab cakes go, it is possible that they were actually fresh. Most items that are deep or pan fried are frozen for at least an hour for them to firm up and be easier to fry. It sounds like they might have been in there at bit longer (depending on how early they were prepped). As a cook, it is totally unacceptable to serve food at the improper temperature and definitely no mold! As a customer you had every right to expect the manager to do something to remedy the situation. I would be completely horrified if a dish went out with mold on my watch.
On a good note, I'm glad you enjoyed DL! I think if you have the mentality that you can have a great time at either resort, you can enjoy each for the unique things they have to offer.

As a WDW vet myself I am glad to hear you got to visit this special place. It is now our family favorite destination. We never thought we would love LA and DL so much. The first time we spent only at DL. Then the next year we split it between San Diego and DL. This year we plan to split it between Monterrey, SF, Yosemite, and DL. We love the Pacific Ocean, the PCH, Walt's original playground, the weather (oh how I love the weather compared to WDW), and all of the natural beauty in California. We laugh everytime we see the California commercials with Chris Isaak playing his guitar on the beach, Rob Lowe overlooking the ocean building a campfire, cyclists riding through the hills, and then Arnold Shwarzenegger (sp?) saying something to the effect of "when will you be back"? He's right its truly a magical state.

Anyways DL is such a wonderful park. The kids love it way more than Disneyworld. My wife loves it more than Disneyworld. There is just so much history and nostalgia and it just seems like there was much more thought and care built into the park. For everyone that still thinks that WDW is bigger and better....please stop and smell the roses.

So glad you enjoy our State - yes, please come back and spend some $$$ here!

DBF and I crack up every time we see that commercial. I always say "Hey, I've never seen Rob Lowe on one of our beaches" LOL
