Hi All! I have committed to a 5K in August. I am VERY excited about this new goal I have set for myself. I've lost around 25 pounds since December, and have pretty much reached the weight I want to be. Now I am even more focused on working out my muscles and becoming stronger.

I went to Jeff Galloway's site (recommended by AmyBeth68) and have a couple of questions.

I am ok with the run/walk that he explains...but on the 3rd day of the week, he states to just run a certain distance. How do I know how far I've gone when I'm running? Do you drive it first to know where to go? (I'm sorry this probably sounds so silly, but I definitely lack common sense!)

Up until now I've been doing the eliptical at home 3 days a week. I've been at 30 minutes for a while, but just increased to 35 minutes this week. Should I still start at week 1? I have plenty of time before the race (20 weeks), so either way it's ok with me.

And cross training...I'm thinking I shouldn't do the eliptical? I enjoy cardio kickboxing and would like to do some ab work. How much time do I need to devote to these on those days? Or what other exercises do you recommend?

I'm not done reading his site, and I am probably going to go buy a book...but any info you'd like to share is GREATLY appreciated!!

:wave2: Hi Kim! So glad you found your way to the events forum! Don't hesitate to join the weekly walking/running club either :). Lots of really great folks training for all sorts of events at WDW!

There are lots of experts here who will offer you great advice. I'll try to answer your questions as well :).

A lot of people here invested in a Garmin GPS wrist device that automatically calculates pace and distance for you. I have not put the money out yet for one of these...low end costs about $100 upwards to $350 for top of the line model I think. Anyway, I usually drive the distance first to get a decent estimate. I have a bunch of courses that I mapped out by driving. I know it's not as accurate as a GPS device but serves it's purpose for now :). Also, some people run on treadmills and tracks which provide you with distances.

I would start with week 1 and see how it feels. If it's WAY too easy (and it may be) then bump it up a few weeks. But it can't hurt to start easy and get into your routine slowly. It will help you to build confidence and work on those running muscles.

The elliptical is an AWESOME way to cross-train. That machine is TOUGH and you are using the same muscles you use for running except in a non-pounding, low impact way. So it actually provides a wonderful way to crosstrain your body in preparation for the race. You might want to add in some core work (muscles, back, etc) and possibly some weigh-training. Cardio-kickboxing is great and has helped me immensely. The most important thing is to do stuff you really enjoy as that will keep you going and change things up for you during the week. But I wouldn't quit the elliptical...it's a fantastic exercise machine! As far as time....I cross-train anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the activity. If you do elliptical for 35 minutes, plus abs and toning you'll be getting a solid day of exercise in and it will benefit your running for certain! :thumbsup2

Good luck Kim. Glad to see you here!!! Congrats on your commitment :grouphug: .
